Chapter 5 - The Summons and the Challenge

The summons came before sunset.

A silver seal bearing the insignia of the Student Council manifested on Kael's dormitory door.

Not paper.

A projection.

Cold. Formal.

Kael Ardent — Report to the Council Hall. Immediately.

No explanation.

No option to refuse.

Council Hall

The chamber was different from the Faculty Room.

More refined.

More silent.

More dangerous.

Four council members stood in a half-circle formation.

At the center—

A silver-haired girl with calm, piercing eyes.

Seraphine Vale.

Vice Head of the Student Council.

Rank A.

Kael stopped three steps away.

"Kael Ardent," Seraphine spoke evenly. "F-Class. Mana capacity: twelve units."

She stepped forward.

"Yet the crystal recorded fluctuations reaching forty-seven."

The air felt heavier.

"We are not interested in rumors," she continued. "We are interested in the academy's stability."

"I did not disrupt it," Kael replied calmly.

Seraphine studied him for several seconds.

Searching for hesitation.

There was none.

That unsettled her more than a lie would have.

"You eliminated a demon manifestation ahead of projected timing," she said. "Now the Ranking Board has marked you as a monitored candidate."

She stopped directly in front of him.

"Do you understand what that means?"

"A target," Kael answered.

A faint curve touched her lips.

"Correct."

One of the council members spoke sharply.

"Vice Head, with respect, we cannot allow an uncontrollable variable within academy grounds."

Kael remained still.

In his previous life, anyone labeled unclassifiable was either restricted—

—or removed.

Seraphine raised a hand, silencing the room.

"Kael Ardent. I will give you one opportunity."

She stepped back.

"Prove that your fluctuation is not a threat."

Before Kael could answer—

The doors swung open.

Heavy footsteps echoed across the marble floor.

Darian.

His gaze locked directly onto Kael.

"I challenge him."

Silence fell.

"This is not a training arena," a council member protested.

Darian did not look at them.

"If he truly defeated a C-Class manifestation, then an official duel should not be an issue."

His voice lowered.

"And if he cannot endure…"

The implication was clear.

Execution disguised as validation.

Kael exhaled slowly.

This was earlier than it should be.

The timeline was accelerating.

"Official duel," Kael said. "Open arena. No mana limiters."

The room shifted.

Too bold for an F-Class.

Seraphine watched him carefully.

"If you lose," she said, "you accept full surveillance and activity restrictions."

"If I win?"

Her eyes sharpened.

"The Ranking Board will conduct a public re-evaluation."

That was bigger than pride.

It meant the entire academy would witness it.

Kael nodded.

"I accept."

Darian's expression changed subtly.

Not contempt.

Caution.

Arena Announcement

Within an hour, the academy buzzed.

"F-Class versus E-Class?"

"The demon guy?"

"Is this an execution?"

The arena filled quickly.

Mana lamps ignited above the coliseum-like structure.

The Ranking Board projected across the sky.

Darian Vale — Rank E

Kael Ardent — Rank F (Monitored)

Seraphine stood as overseer.

"The duel ends when one participant is unable to continue," she announced.

Silence.

The bell rang.

Darian moved instantly.

Fast.

Faster than the demon.

His blade aimed directly for Kael's shoulder.

Kael shifted half a step.

The sword struck stone.

Cracks exploded outward.

Gasps erupted from the crowd.

"He dodged that?"

Darian pivoted smoothly.

Second strike. Lower angle. Sharper.

Kael blocked with his forearm.

Impact.

Pain shot through his bones.

Still too strong.

Darian pressed forward.

"If this is all you have," he said coldly, "you'll die outside these walls."

Kael met his eyes.

"I already did."

For a split second—

Darian froze.

That was enough.

Kael advanced.

His movements were efficient.

Precise.

Not reckless like an F-Class.

Not refined like a noble.

But experienced.

As if he had fought far more battles than his age allowed.

Murmurs spread through the audience.

Seraphine narrowed her eyes.

Mana around Kael trembled.

Subtle.

Different.

Darian felt it too.

He stepped back.

"So that's what you're hiding."

Kael said nothing.

Inside him—

Two currents began spinning faster.

Light.

Dark.

Colliding.

If he released it—

Everything would change.

If he didn't—

He would lose.

Darian lifted his sword.

Blue aura ignited around him.

"I'll stop holding back."

The crowd roared.

Seraphine whispered under her breath—

"Show me… what you really are."

Kael inhaled slowly.

The arena vibrated.

Air tightened.

For a fraction of a second—

A black silhouette manifested behind him.

Not everyone saw it.

But Seraphine did.

And Darian felt it.

Not fully released.

Not yet.

But close.

Very close.
