(GILBERT'S POV)
I felt sick. The casual cruelty in Nowi's voice was horrifying.
"But then a prophecy emerged from the ashes of their destruction," Nowi continued, his tone turning bitter. "It said that the sun children would rise again. That they would band together and destroy me and all my followers. A ridiculous notion I thought."
I felt the story settling over my consciousness before I could respond. I kept my mental voice quiet, trembling. "You... you didn't believe the prophecy?"
"Of course I didn't." Nowi's laugh was sharp, dismissive. "I had eradicated every last sun child. I had scoured the realms, burned their sanctuaries to ash, and devoured any trace of Vaelion's lineage. For millennia, I believed the prophecy was nothing more than a desperate fairy tale told by a dying god."
"But something changed."
