Chapter 7 - whisper of a knife - chapter 7

The trial was over, but Armand's pulse hadn't slowed. The whisper still echoed in his ears, warning him with every breath. Grace Johnson walked beside him as they left the library's hidden chamber, her steps calm, purposeful.

"You passed," she said. "Now comes the harder part."

Armand frowned. "Harder than hearing voices in steel?"

Grace's lips curved into the faintest smile. "Listening is only the beginning. Acting on what you hear… that's the true test."

They emerged into the night, the city quiet under a blanket of fog. Grace handed him a folded slip of paper. On it was a single name: Professor Alden Wright.

Armand's stomach tightened. "He teaches at the academy."

Grace nodded. "And he hides more than lessons. The whisper says he's keeping something dangerous. Tonight, we find out what."

Armand stared at the paper, the weight of the mission pressing down on him. He wasn't a spy, wasn't a fighter — just a student who had heard a sound no one else could. But Grace's eyes held no doubt, only expectation.

"Why me?" he asked quietly.

"Because the whisper chose you," she replied. "And once it chooses, it never lets go."

The fog thickened as they approached the academy gates. Somewhere inside, Professor Wright was waiting — and with him, the secret the Circle of Silence had sworn to uncover.
