Chapter 4 - The Black Feathers and the Golden Apple

A Grimm's Fairy Tale: The Legend of the Raven and the Princess

Far beyond the clouds lay the Dawn Kingdom, where the magnificent royal capital stood at the foot of rolling mountains. Its borders touched the lands of the savage Bull Tribe. One year, the Bull Tribe suddenly broke the peace treaty and invaded, burning villages and plundering the land—leaving the border people in misery.

Princess Ailo, known as the "Rose Princess," was the king's beloved only daughter. Her eyes were as clear as morning dew, her cheeks as rosy as blooming roses—and what made her special was her deep knowledge of warfare and strategy, often advising her father on state affairs. When urgent dispatches from the border flooded the palace like snowflakes, Ailo could no longer stay idle. She knelt before the king: "Father, let me lead troops to the border! I have studied military texts thoroughly—I can drive away the barbarians!"

The king looked at his daughter's determined eyes but shook his head helplessly. "My child, battlefields are dangerous. You are the jewel of the Dawn Kingdom—how could I risk your life? Besides, we already have the perfect commander: General Adrian, who just returned triumphant from the eastern campaign."

Adrian—his name was known to every soul in the kingdom. Born into poverty, he had risen through the ranks with unmatched courage and military genius, winning countless victories on the battlefield. When barbarians raided his village years ago, the late king sent troops to save them. Since then, he had sworn to defend the realm with his life.

When the king wavered, Adrian remained calm. "Your Majesty, I am innocent and will submit to investigation. But let me return to the border—the barbarians will attack again soon!"

But the regent insisted, and the king had no choice but to have Adrian imprisoned. Ailo rushed to find proof of his innocence, but all evidence seemed to point against him. Desperate, she followed one of the regent's men and overheard the truth: the theft was a plot, and the regent planned to seize the throne during the king's birthday feast!

To uncover the truth, Ailo decided to go to the Dark Forest in the north—the last place the Raven King had been seen before his transformation, and the home of the legendary "Bright Knight." She slipped out of the palace with only a sapphire necklace from her father and a small pouch of dried golden apples.

Along the way, she saw the curse's effects everywhere: cracked earth, empty villages, and black feathers scattered across the ground. When she gave dried golden apples to the homeless, their faces regained color, and even withered plants bloomed briefly.

At the forest's edge, an old woman in a black cloak stopped her. "Princess, this forest is cursed—no one who enters returns alive. Go back!"

"Thank you for warning me, but I must go to save the kingdom!" Ailo said firmly.

The old woman's eyes showed approval as she handed her a crystal vial. "This is Spring of the Forest Heart—it will guide you through darkness. Remember: when you meet ravens, do not fear or fight them. They are guardians lost to shadow."

Ailo entered the forest, where tall trees blocked out all light save for the soft blue glow from the vial. Following faint sounds of pain, she found a small raven with a wounded wing, bleeding and weak. She bandaged its wound and fed it a piece of dried apple.

The raven's fierce eyes softened, and it spoke: "Kind princess, thank you. I am Xiao Hei, servant to the Raven King. We are not evil—our lord was blinded by hatred and made us harm the people..."

Led by Xiao Hei, Ailo found an abandoned castle deep in the woods. Its gates were carved with intricate patterns, and a broken knight's emblem stood at the center. Inside, a well-preserved portrait hung on the wall—a knight in silver armor with golden hair and a warm smile, holding a shining golden apple.

"This is our king, once the Bright Knight Ryan," Xiao Hei said sadly. "Three years ago, Ryan went to the Forbidden Lands to find the Spring of Life for the queen, who was gravely ill. But when he returned, he found the king had taken a new wife and declared him a traitor. Consumed by anger, he became the Raven King and swore revenge on the kingdom..."

Ailo was shocked. Just then, a dark wind swept through the hall, and the Raven King appeared—a massive black bird with red eyes, chained by shadows. "Another human—come to mock me?"

"No! I've come to find the truth. If my father wronged you, I will apologize for the kingdom!" Ailo stepped forward bravely.

The Raven King roared in fury. "Apologies cannot undo what was taken from me!" He raised his wing to strike, but when his feathers touched Ailo's sapphire necklace, it blazed with blue light, resonating with the knight's emblem in the portrait.

As the blue light faded, scenes appeared on the walls like moving paintings:

Three years ago, Ryan and Queen Anna—Ailo's mother—had been childhood sweethearts, guarding the kingdom together. When Anna fell gravely ill, Ryan defied the king and journeyed to the Forbidden Lands for the Spring of Life. While he was gone, the king's brother, Regent Conrad, staged a coup, imprisoned the king, and forged evidence of Ryan's treason. He declared Anna dead and planned to kill Ailo too, but loyal guards rescued her and gave her the sapphire necklace—Ryan and Anna's betrothal gift.

When Ryan returned with the spring water, he found Conrad on the throne, accusing him of murder. They fought, but Ryan was weakened by his journey and was defeated, transformed into the Raven King by dark magic. Conrad died soon after, and the king was restored—but lost his memory of the plot, believing Ryan had betrayed him.

Tears streamed down Ailo's face as she approached him. "Uncle Ryan—I'm Ailo, Anna's daughter! Look at this necklace—mother told me to find you and tell you she loved you always..."

The Raven King stared at the necklace, pain crossing his red eyes. Slowly, he transformed back into a man—weary but still noble. He took the necklace with trembling hands. "Anna... I wronged the king and hurt so many innocent people..."

Just then, shouts echoed outside. Xiao Hei flew in panic. "My lord—Conrad's followers are here! They want to kill you and take the princess!"

Outside, they found soldiers in black armor led by Marco, a dark sorcerer. "Ryan, your treason ends today! I shall take the throne!"

Battle erupted. Ailo and Ryan fought side by side, their courage inspiring the soldiers. When Marco saw his men falling, he summoned a dark dragon that engulfed the sky in flame. Ryan charged forward but was thrown back by the beast's tail.

Desperate, Ailo remembered the crystal vial. She poured the Spring of the Forest Heart onto the ground and sang her mother's song: "Golden apples gleam, light shines bright; guard our home, day and night..."

A barrier of light rose around them, trapping the dragon. Far away, golden light blazed from the palace—the royal golden apple tree had bloomed again, and fruit rained down, glowing with healing power. The light flew to Ryan's sword, which now bore the mark of a golden apple.

"Light will always triumph over darkness!" Ryan roared, leading the charge to defeat the dragon. Marco was captured and sealed in a cave deep in the forest.

When peace returned, the king embraced Ryan. "My friend, I wronged you. From this day forth, you are Grand Marshal of the realm—your family shall guard us forever!"

Ryan bowed low. "I ask only to protect the kingdom and its people."

The king smiled, looking from Ryan to Ailo. "General, my daughter's heart is yours. Will you take her as your wife, to guard the kingdom together?"

Ryan knelt before her, his voice solemn. "I will protect her and the realm with my life, now and always."

Their wedding was held in the great cathedral, with red roses and silver ribbons adorning every corner. Ailo wore a gown of white silk, her crown woven from roses, while Ryan stood tall in polished armor. As they spoke their vows, white doves soared overhead, and the people cheered: "Long live the Grand Marshal and the Rose Princess!"

Afterward, they returned to the border, where Ailo became Ryan's most trusted advisor. Together, they strengthened defenses, taught the people to farm and build, and brought prosperity to the frontier.

One spring day, as wild roses bloomed across the hills, Ryan led Ailo into a field of flowers. He pulled out a silver ring, carved with ravens and golden apples. "Ailo—this ring is for you. Ravens are my strength, apples are your light. I will guard you and our home, always."

Tears of joy filled Ailo's eyes as she slipped on the ring. "And I will stand by you, with wisdom and courage, now and forever."

They embraced as smoke rose from distant watchtowers—a sign of peace and hope. From that day on, a legend spread through the Dawn Kingdom: when wild roses bloom on the border, the Grand Marshal and Rose Princess ride forth on white horses, their love as strong as steel and as enduring as the apples they hold dear.

Years later, when their child ascended the throne, a statue was erected in the palace square—Ryan with sword in hand, Ailo holding a golden apple, both gazing toward the horizon. It stands to this day, a reminder that true love means standing together, through battle and peace, for all they hold sacred.
