Chapter 54 - How to tell

Jessy had faced many difficult moments in her life, but none had felt quite like this one.

The road leading to her parents' house stretched ahead of them, familiar in every detail, yet heavy in a way she couldn't explain. She sat quietly in the passenger seat, her body relaxed but her mind anything but. Her hand rested on her growing belly, fingers moving slowly, almost unconsciously, as if grounding herself through the life she carried.

Elias drove beside her with calm focus, his presence steady, reassuring without needing to speak. He didn't ask if she was ready. He didn't pressure her into conversation. And somehow, that silence made it easier to breathe.

From the back seat, Lia's soft voice broke through the tension.

"Jessy… are we going to your home?"

Jessy turned slightly, her expression softening instantly. "Yes," she said gently. "We are."

Lia smiled, leaning forward just enough to rest her chin against the seat. "Will they like me?"

That question caught Jessy off guard.

Not because it was difficult—but because it was innocent.

And honest.

Jessy smiled, reaching back briefly to touch her hand. "They will love you."

Elias glanced at her then, just for a second, and there was something in his eyes—something quiet, something proud—that made her chest tighten.

The car slowed as they approached the gate.

And just like that—

They were there.

The house stood exactly as she remembered it.

Warm.

Familiar.

Safe.

But today, it felt like more than just home.

It felt like a place where everything she had been holding back was waiting for her.

Jessy stepped out of the car slowly, taking a deep breath as her feet met the ground. Elias came around to her side without a word, his presence close enough to steady her without overwhelming her. He didn't touch her immediately, but she could feel him there, and that alone gave her strength.

Lia climbed out next, naturally reaching for Jessy's hand.

Jessy held it without hesitation.

That simple gesture said more than any explanation could.

Before she could knock, the door opened.

Her mother—Elis Wilsons—stood there.

For a moment, surprise crossed her face. Real surprise.

Then it softened into warmth.

"Jessy…" she said, her voice filled with emotion.

Jessy stepped forward and hugged her tightly, holding on just a little longer than usual, as if she needed that moment before everything else unfolded.

"I missed you," her mother said softly.

"I missed you too," Jessy replied.

When they pulled apart, Elis' eyes shifted—first to Elias, then to Lia.

There was a pause.

Not judgmental.

But observant.

Careful.

Jessy stepped slightly aside. "Mom… this is Elias," she said, her tone calm but firm. "And this is Lia."

Elias nodded respectfully. "It's nice to meet you."

Elis gave a small nod, still processing, but her natural warmth didn't disappear. "Welcome," she said gently.

Lia stepped forward without hesitation, her small fingers tightening slightly around Jessy's hand. "Hello," she said with a shy smile.

Elis' expression softened immediately. "Hello, sweetheart."

There was curiosity in her eyes now, but kindness still led.

"Come in," she said.

Inside, the atmosphere shifted almost instantly.

Jake Wilsons was seated in the living room, but as soon as Jessy entered, he stood up. His eyes moved quickly—first to Jessy, then to Elias, then to Lia.

And then—

To Jessy again.

But it wasn't just him.

Penelope was there.

Standing near the couch.

Watching.

Still.

Sharp.

She had changed.

College had done that.

There was something more defined in her posture now, more awareness in her eyes.

But one thing hadn't changed—

She could read Jessy too well.

"Jessy?" Penelope said, stepping forward slowly.

Jessy forced a small smile. "Hey."

Penelope didn't hug her immediately.

She looked at her.

Really looked at her.

Taking in everything—

The glow.

The bump.

The calmness that hadn't been there before.

Then her gaze shifted.

To Elias.

To Lia.

Back to Jessy.

Something flickered in her eyes.

Suspicion.

Concern.

Confusion.

"You didn't say you were bringing people," she said.

Her tone wasn't rude.

But it wasn't light either.

Jessy inhaled quietly. "I wanted you to meet them."

Elias stepped forward again, composed. "It's good to meet you."

Jake nodded slowly. "You too."

But the attention didn't stay on him.

Because Lia moved closer to Jessy.

Naturally.

Comfortably.

And then—

Without thinking.

Without knowing what it meant—

She spoke.

"Mom… can I sit here?"

The word dropped into the room like something fragile hitting the floor.

And breaking everything open.

Silence followed.

Immediate.

Heavy.

Jessy felt it in her chest.

In her breath.

In the way the air shifted around her.

Her mother froze.

Her father's expression hardened slightly in confusion.

But Penelope—

Penelope reacted.

Her head snapped slightly toward Jessy, her eyes sharp, searching, almost disbelieving.

"Mom?" she repeated.

Jessy didn't pull away.

She didn't correct Lia.

Instead, she gently guided her to sit beside her, her hand resting protectively over hers.

"Yes," she said softly.

That answer didn't calm anything.

It made it worse.

Penelope took a step closer now, her arms crossing as she stared directly at Jessy.

"I just got back," she said, her voice steady but edged. "And this is what I walk into?"

Jessy met her gaze.

Not defensive.

Not weak.

Just… steady.

"It's not what it looks like," she said.

Penelope let out a quiet breath. "Then what is it?"

Jake stepped forward slightly. "Jessy… explain."

Elis remained silent, but her eyes stayed fixed on her daughter, filled with concern and quiet urgency.

Jessy felt the weight of all of them.

Every expectation.

Every question.

Every emotion in the room.

And for a moment—

She almost said everything.

Alina.

The truth.

Lia.

Everything.

But something held her back.

Not fear.

Timing.

This wasn't how it should come out.

Not rushed.

Not chaotic.

Not in a single overwhelming moment.

She exhaled slowly, her hand resting again on her stomach.

"There are things I found out recently," she said carefully. "Things about our family."

That shifted the tension.

Now it wasn't just confusion.

It was attention.

Focused.

Serious.

Penelope's expression changed slightly—but her eyes didn't soften.

"What things?" she asked.

Jessy hesitated.

Then shook her head slightly.

"I'm not going to say it like this," she said quietly.

That answer didn't sit well.

Penelope stepped even closer now. "Then when?"

Jessy looked at her.

At her parents.

At the home she had grown up in.

And then—

At Lia beside her.

At Elias, standing just close enough to remind her she wasn't alone.

"Soon," she said.

Her voice was soft.

But firm.

"I came here because I don't want to hide anything from you anymore. But I need to say it properly."

Silence followed.

Not peaceful.

Not resolved.

But different.

Because now—

They knew.

Something was coming.

Something real.

Something that would change everything.

Penelope held her gaze for a long moment.

Long enough to say everything she wasn't saying out loud.

Then finally—

She nodded once.

Not in agreement.

But in warning.

"I'll be waiting," she said.

Jessy didn't look away.

"I know."

The room didn't return to normal.

It couldn't.

Because the truth had already entered.

Even if it hadn't been spoken yet.

And everyone in that house felt it.

Waiting.

Growing.

Inevitable.
