I'M IN THE MIDDLE OF A STRANGE DREAM ABOUT BEING CAUGHT IN A blizzard when there's a gentle pressure on my shoulder.
I groggily open my eyes to find Dominik crouching by the bed.
It's still dark out, but there's enough light to see the contours of his face. His hand rests on my arm.
"What's wrong?" I force myself to sit up, rubbing my eyes. "Is it my dad?"
"He's fine. Everything's okay. Will you come with me?"
Reassured it's not an emergency, I swing my legs out of bed and yawn. "Where are we going?"
"The beach."
"It's the middle of the night."
"Dawn breaks in twenty minutes." He hands me a spongy neoprene bundle. "Put this on."
I unfold the bundle, revealing a wetsuit. "You can't seriously think I'm going in the water."
"You lived in San Diego. You never spent time at the beach?"
"I used to."
