The creature was still watching Sam from the roof.
It crouched on all fours, its impossibly long limbs folded beneath its narrow body. Its grey fingers gripped the edge of the ruined building, each fingertip ending in a claw so thin that it resembled a surgical blade. Its red eyes reflected no light from the moon.
Sam stared back at it.
Neither moved.
The wind passed through the grasslands, bending the tall grass around the building. Somewhere in the distance, an owl called once before falling silent.
Sam's instincts screamed at him to attack.
Every battle he had survived had taught him something. Vampires could be killed by exploiting their weaknesses. Wizards could be overwhelmed if their concentration was broken. Monsters could be outmaneuvered, exhausted, or destroyed through superior force.
But this thing offered him none of those familiar assurances.
He couldn't feel its mana. He couldn't hear its heartbeat. Even his enhanced senses struggled to establish where its body ended and the darkness surrounding it began.
And yet, it knew his name.
It knew where his family was sleeping.
The creature's head tilted until its ear nearly touched its shoulder.
"Sam."
This time, the voice sounded like Elena.
Not an imitation that was merely similar. It was her voice exactly, including the small tremble she sometimes had when she was frightened but trying not to show it.
"Sam, please. Come back inside."
His stomach tightened.
The creature's mouth hadn't moved.
"You're frightening the children," Elena's voice continued from its direction. "Come inside, sweetheart."
Sam's fingers curled.
"Don't use her voice."
The creature slowly straightened.
Then it laughed.
The sound was a mixture of several people laughing at once, some delighted, others choking, one sounding as though it were crying.
"Interesting."
It stepped off the roof.
It didn't fall.
It simply appeared on the ground, several metres away, without disturbing the grass.
"You recognize the voice. You remember the person. You understand the threat." Its head bent to the other side. "But you still don't understand what I am."
"No," Sam replied, forcing his breathing to remain steady. "I don't."
He lowered his centre of gravity.
"But I know what happens to things that threaten my family."
Lightning crawled across his shoulders.
The creature's red eyes brightened.
"There it is."
Its long fingers opened.
"That foreign light."
Sam attacked.
He launched himself forward with Lightning Step, crossing the distance in a violent burst of blue-white electricity. His fist struck the creature squarely in the chest.
The impact sounded like a thunderclap.
The creature flew backwards, tore through a cluster of trees, and vanished into the darkness beyond them.
Sam landed in a crouch.
For half a second, he felt something approaching satisfaction.
Then his instincts screamed.
He twisted.
A claw swept through the space where his neck had been.
Sam caught a glimpse of a grey arm passing his face. He brought up his forearm, reinforcing it with Stone Skin and earth magic.
The claw struck.
His magical reinforcement shattered.
Three narrow cuts appeared across his arm.
Sam jumped backwards, electricity flashing around his legs.
The creature stood where he had been a moment earlier, perfectly upright, its neck bent at an angle that should have broken every bone in it.
There was no blood on its claws.
There was something worse.
For one brief moment, Sam felt a coldness beneath his skin that had nothing to do with temperature.
Something had touched him that his body could not recognize.
The cuts began to close through regeneration.
But the coldness remained.
Sam glanced at his arm.
A faint, dark thread seemed to stretch from the wounds toward the creature's fingers.
Then it disappeared.
His expression hardened.
What did it just do to me?
The system answered before he could summon it.
#SYSTEM WARNING
Unknown hostile interaction detected.
Target classification: Unavailable
Physical damage: Minor
Soul integrity: 99.7%
Foreign energy detected within hostile entity.
Warning: Existing defensive traits do not provide confirmed protection against this form of attack.
Sam's blood turned cold.
Soul integrity?
He had never seen that statistic before.
The creature leaned forward, its lips stretching into a smile that exposed rows of thin, uneven teeth.
"Ah," it whispered. "You felt that."
Sam raised both hands.
"Lightning Lance!"
A concentrated spear of lightning tore through the night.
The creature didn't dodge.
The attack struck its chest and exploded in a brilliant flash. Electricity crawled over its entire body, illuminating its unnaturally thin ribs beneath the grey skin.
For the first time, it screamed.
The sound was not human.
It came from somewhere deep and distant, a place filled with the echo of countless voices. The grass around the creature flattened in a widening circle. The earth cracked beneath its feet.
Sam immediately followed with a Mana Sphere, then another.
He compressed the spheres with telekinesis, forcing them together before detonating them against the creature's chest.
The explosion lit up the grassland.
When the light faded, the creature was on one knee.
Black smoke drifted from its body.
A narrow fissure had opened across its chest, revealing something beneath the grey flesh: a shifting darkness filled with tiny, distant lights.
Sam couldn't tell whether those lights were stars or eyes.
The creature looked down at the damage.
Then it looked at him.
"You can hurt me."
Sam's mouth tightened.
"Good. Saves me the trouble of guessing."
The creature began to laugh again.
"You can hurt the part of me that has entered your world."
It pressed its long fingers against the fissure.
The wound closed.
"That is not the same as hurting me."
And then it vanished.
Sam spun around, searching the darkness.
Nothing.
His Perception reached outward. He listened for footsteps, watched the movement of the grass, searched for disturbances in the air and traces of mana.
Nothing.
The creature was gone.
A terrible pressure settled behind his eyes.
Then a voice whispered directly inside his head.
"Let me show you what you are fighting."
The world disappeared.
Sam stood in a place without a sky.
The ground beneath his feet resembled black glass. Far above him, enormous shapes moved behind a ceiling of swirling crimson clouds. Distant screams echoed through a landscape of twisted towers and floating islands.
He could see a colossal gate in the distance.
Something enormous stood beyond it.
He couldn't make out its face, but the mere sight of it made his instincts recoil. There was a sense of ancient appetite surrounding that distant presence, an overwhelming power that seemed to regard everything in existence as something it could consume.
Sam staggered.
His body was still standing in the grassland.
He knew that.
Somehow, he knew he hadn't physically moved.
Yet he was also here.
The creature appeared beside him.
In this place, its body was different. Its grey flesh seemed translucent, and the darkness beneath it stretched into dozens of thin tendrils. Each tendril was connected to a distant point of light.
Some of those lights were bright.
Others were dim.
Several had gone out.
The creature watched Sam examine them.
"This is where I come from," it said, speaking in a voice that sounded like an old man whispering from inside a coffin.
Sam forced himself to stand straight.
"Where?"
The creature's smile widened.
"A place your little world has given a name."
It leaned closer.
"The Nightosphere."
Sam's heart lurched.
He knew that name.
He knew enough about the strange world he had fallen into to understand that the Nightosphere wasn't simply another dangerous region of Ooo. It was a place of demons, monstrous inhabitants, and powers that could make even the most powerful wizards seem insignificant.
Marceline's father ruled over it.
Hunson Abadeer.
And this thing had somehow crossed into Ooo without him knowing.
"You're a demon," Sam said.
The creature looked almost offended.
"Such a small word."
Its long fingers brushed against one of the dim lights.
Sam felt a sudden, sharp pain behind his ribs.
He dropped to one knee.
The light flickered.
The creature's eyes gleamed with delight.
"Your soul is extraordinary, Sam. Not because it is stronger than every soul I've encountered, but because it carries a pattern that does not belong to this reality."
It circled him slowly.
"You came from somewhere else. A world with different rules. Different possibilities. And inside you is an energy that continues to change, refine itself, and adapt."
Sam gritted his teeth.
The creature's claws hovered over his chest.
"If I consume it completely, I may finally acquire what I need to challenge the master of my own realm."
A thought struck Sam.
"Abadeer."
The creature stopped.
For the first time, its expression changed.
A thin, murderous hatred crossed its face.
"That name," it whispered, "belongs to a creature that has humiliated me for longer than your world has known your kind."
The air trembled.
"I have devoured the souls of warriors, kings, sorcerers, and monsters. I have crossed places where entire civilizations vanished into darkness. Yet every time I have approached the throne I desire, I have been driven back."
Its claws curled.
"But you..."
It looked at Sam as though he were a treasure it had spent centuries searching for.
"You are different."
Sam forced himself to rise.
"Then you're going to be disappointed."
He lunged.
The creature smiled.
The false world shattered.
#The Emergency Allocation
Sam returned to his body with a gasp.
He was on one knee in the grass, his hands pressed against the earth. His heart hammered against his ribs, and sweat ran down his face despite the cold night air.
The creature stood several metres away.
It hadn't moved.
Not physically.
But something had changed.
Sam could feel it now not through mana, not through sound, but through the faintest sensation of something trying to pull at the inside of his chest.
The creature had reached into his soul.
And it had discovered a way to take something from him.
"You're going to be mine," it whispered.
Sam opened his system.
He didn't waste time asking questions.
He had 345 stored stat points. He had been saving them, considering how best to distribute them, but that no longer mattered.
He needed every advantage his system could provide.
"System! Spend every stored stat point! Auto-allocate equally across all six primary attributes!"
For a moment, the system remained silent.
Then
#EMERGENCY ALLOCATION

Emergency allocation complete. All six attributes enhanced.
Power surged through Sam.
His muscles tightened. His senses sharpened. The world seemed to slow as his perception expanded, revealing the individual movements of the grass and the tiny particles of dust suspended in the air.
His mana swelled, pressing against the boundaries of his body.
For the first time since the creature had appeared, Sam felt as though he had regained some control over the situation.
He looked up.
The creature was staring at him.
"How fascinating."
Its smile disappeared.
"You are willing to sacrifice your future strength for the chance to survive tonight."
Sam rose slowly.
"I don't know what you are. I don't know how to kill you."
Lightning began to coil around his arms.
"But I know you're not getting anywhere near my family."
He vanished.
The creature's head snapped to the side.
Sam appeared behind it, delivering a reinforced kick that sent it crashing into the ground. Before it could rise, he unleashed a barrage of mana bolts, each one striking with enough force to crater the earth.
He followed with Lightning Step, striking from another direction, then another.
For several seconds, the grassland became a storm of blue-white flashes and exploding earth.
Sam moved faster than he ever had before.
And for the first time, the creature struggled to follow him.
One of Sam's punches connected with its jaw.
Another struck its ribs.
A third smashed into the back of its skull.
The creature stumbled.
Sam seized the opportunity.
"GATHERING STORM!"
Dark clouds rapidly gathered overhead.
Wind swept across the grassland. Lightning flashed between the clouds, illuminating the creature's twisted silhouette.
Sam raised one hand.
"GREATER HEAVENLY LIGHTNING!"
A colossal bolt descended from the sky.
It struck the creature directly.
The ground erupted.
The blast carved a smoking trench through the grassland, and the thunder shook the ruined building behind Sam.
He landed heavily, breathing hard.
For a moment, there was only the sound of the wind.
Then a long, grey hand emerged from the crater.
The creature pulled itself upright.
Its left arm hung uselessly at its side. Half its face had been burned away, revealing a black, star-filled void beneath its skin.
It looked at Sam.
And began to applaud.
Slowly.
One hand against the other.
"Magnificent."
Sam's expression twisted.
"Why won't you stay down?"
"Because you keep mistaking the body for the creature."
The damaged side of its face began to reform.
"Now, however..."
Its eyes narrowed.
"...I believe it is time to stop playing."
The temperature dropped.
The wind died.
Even the distant insects fell silent.
Sam's enhanced perception registered a movement before his eyes could follow it.
He tried to dodge.
A claw struck his shoulder.
Pain exploded through his body.
He was thrown sideways, smashed through a tree, and rolled across the grass. He tried to stand, but his right arm refused to respond.
The wound was already regenerating.
Yet the pain continued to deepen.
Sam looked down.
His physical injury was closing.
Something inside him was not.
The system flashed.
# CRITICAL WARNING
Soul integrity: 96.2%
Foreign entity has extracted a fragment of the user's soul.
Physical regeneration cannot restore the missing fragment. Recovery method unknown.
Sam stared at the warning.
The creature had stolen a piece of his soul.
It held one of its long fingers up. A tiny, luminous fragment hovered above its claw, pulsing with a strange energy that didn't belong to this universe.
Sam felt an immediate, instinctive revulsion.
That fragment was his.
He could feel its absence like a missing piece of himself.
The creature swallowed it.
Its entire body convulsed.
For a moment, the red light in its eyes turned blue-white.
Then it screamed.
The sound tore through the night, shaking loose stones from the ruined building and sending flocks of birds fleeing from distant trees.
The creature staggered backwards, clutching its chest.
Sam saw something that gave him a glimmer of hope.
The foreign energy was hurting it.
Not physically.
It was struggling to process what it had consumed.
The creature's limbs spasmed, its body flickering between its grey-skinned form and a shape made entirely of darkness.
It dropped to one knee.
"Impossible..."
Sam forced himself upright.
"So you can be hurt."
The creature looked at him with pure hatred.
"You have no idea what you've given me."
It lunged.
Sam met it head-on.
Their collision sent a shockwave through the grassland.
Sam's reinforced fist struck its chest. The creature's claws slashed across his side. Sam twisted, caught its wrist, and drove his knee into its stomach.
For a few desperate seconds, they fought at close range.
Sam was stronger now. Faster. More perceptive.
But the creature was not bound by the same limitations.
Its limbs bent around his attacks. Its body stretched and compressed in ways that defied anatomy. Sometimes a blow passed through it entirely, only for its claws to emerge from a shadow behind Sam.
Every time it touched him, he felt the same terrible pull.
Another attempt to reach his soul.
He couldn't allow another hit.
He couldn't afford it.
The creature struck his chest with the heel of its hand.
Sam felt something inside him tear.
His vision went white.
He fell to his knees.
The system flickered.
Soul integrity: 93.8%.
Another fragment had been taken.
The creature staggered, clutching its head.
It was suffering, but it was also becoming more powerful.
The two stolen fragments circled within its chest like tiny stars caught in a collapsing galaxy. Its body shuddered as it tried to absorb their foreign energy.
Sam understood then.
The creature wasn't simply feeding.
It was trying to transform itself.
And every piece of his soul it consumed made the process more dangerous for both of them.
He had to end this.
Now.
### The Demon Eye Sword
A child's cry came from inside the building.
"Dad!"
It was Daniel.
Sam's head snapped toward the shelter.
The creature noticed.
Its mouth stretched into a delighted smile.
"Ah. Your weakness has a voice."
It started toward the building.
Sam's fear transformed into fury.
"DON'T YOU DARE!"
He unleashed a wave of lightning so powerful that the grass around him caught fire. The bolt struck the creature in the back and hurled it away from the shelter.
It hit the ground, rolled, and rose again.
Sam placed himself between the creature and his family.
His legs trembled.
His soul felt damaged.
His mana was still abundant, but his body was struggling to withstand the strain of the battle. The wounds inflicted by the creature were healing, yet each new injury left behind a lingering emptiness.
He needed the Demon Eye Sword.
The weapon was inside the building with Daniel.
But calling for it would mean taking his attention away from the creature, even for a moment.
Sam glanced at the shelter.
"Daniel!" he shouted. "The sword! Throw it to me!"
Inside, Daniel clutched the weapon with both hands.
Elena held the children close behind him.
She had heard the thunder. She had heard Sam screaming. And now, through the gaps in the damaged doorway, she could see the terrifying silhouette standing outside.
"Sam!" she cried.
"I'm fine!" he shouted back.
He wasn't.
They both knew it.
"Daniel, stay behind me," Elena ordered, placing herself between her children and the door.
Daniel swallowed hard.
He was frightened. Of course he was frightened.
But his father had given him the sword and trusted him to protect his family.
He wasn't going to fail that trust.
He stepped to the doorway, waited for the creature to turn its attention toward Sam, and hurled the Demon Eye Sword outside.
The weapon spun through the air.
Sam caught it.
The instant his fingers closed around the hilt, the sword's supernatural presence flared.
The creature stopped.
Its red eyes widened.
For the first time that night, it looked genuinely cautious.
"That weapon..."
Sam tightened his grip.
The Demon Eye Sword vibrated in his hand. Its dark blade seemed to drink in the moonlight, and the strange eye embedded in it opened.
Sam felt the weapon connect to him.
Not to his mana.
To something deeper.
The sword's presence pushed against the foreign force trying to pull at his soul, anchoring him to his own body.
The pressure inside his chest eased.
Not completely.
But enough.
Sam took a breath.
"Thanks, Daniel!"
Then he faced the creature.
"Now let's see if you can survive a proper fight."
He attacked.
The Demon Eye Sword cut through the creature's extended arm.
This time, the limb didn't simply regenerate.
A dark, shrieking substance spilled from the wound. It writhed like a living shadow, attempting to crawl back into the creature's body.
The sword's eye followed it.
The shadow caught fire with a sound like breaking glass.
The creature screamed and leapt backwards.
Sam pursued it with Lightning Step, slashing across its torso.
The blade carved a glowing line through its chest.
The creature retaliated, its claws striking Sam's shoulder and thigh, but Sam twisted through the attacks, using his improved perception to anticipate each movement.
He could not match the creature's unnatural movement perfectly.
But he could recognize its patterns.
Whenever it attempted to reach for his soul, the darkness within its body gathered toward its chest.
Whenever it became unstable, its physical form solidified.
And whenever the Demon Eye Sword struck that solidified form, the creature suffered real damage.
Sam began to build a plan.
He couldn't defeat the Nightosphere creature through brute force.
But he could force it to remain in a body long enough to hurt it.
He drove the sword into the ground.
"STATIC FIELD!"
Electricity spread across the earth.
The creature leapt, attempting to escape the expanding field, but Sam raised both hands.
Telekinesis seized the soil beneath it.
Earth magic erupted, forming jagged pillars that forced the creature into the air. Sam followed with a barrage of mana spheres, steering each one with telekinesis.
The explosions pushed it back toward the centre of the field.
Then Sam poured lightning into the entire trap.
"STATIC FIELD OVERLOAD!"
The grassland erupted in blue-white light.
The creature's body stiffened.
Its limbs jerked violently as electricity coursed through its manifested form. The darkness beneath its skin writhed, unable to escape the cage of storm energy.
Sam seized the moment.
He ripped the Demon Eye Sword from the ground and charged.
The creature looked up.
For the first time, it seemed afraid.
"No!"
Sam swung.
The blade struck its chest.
The eye on the sword opened fully.
A shockwave passed through the creature, not cutting flesh but tearing at the unnatural connection holding its manifested body within Ooo.
The creature's scream became a chorus of voices.
Sam felt the two stolen pieces of his soul tug violently inside its chest.
For one fleeting instant, he sensed them.
He reached instinctively toward them.
The sword's eye flashed.
The fragments flickered.
But they did not return.
The creature exploded into a mass of black tendrils that scattered across the grassland, each one moving in a different direction.
Sam swung again.
The blade severed several tendrils before they could escape. Lightning burned others into nothing.
The remaining shadows converged in the air several metres away.
The creature reformed, but its body was now smaller and more fragile. Its limbs shook uncontrollably. The fissure across its chest remained open, revealing the two stolen fragments pulsing inside it.
It stared at Sam.
Hatred, fear, and an unsettling fascination twisted its expression.
"You..." it whispered.
Sam raised the sword.
"Come back here."
The creature backed away.
"You have wounded something that cannot be understood by your little system. You have damaged a power that has existed since before your world learned to fear the dark."
"Then stay in the dark."
The creature's smile returned, but it was no longer confident.
It was a promise.
"You think this is victory?"
It pressed a hand against its damaged chest.
"I have tasted you now. I have tasted the world you came from. I know what makes you different."
Sam stepped forward.
The creature began to sink into its own shadow.
"And I will remember."
Sam lunged, but his sword passed through empty air.
The shadow collapsed.
The grass moved gently in the wind.
The creature was gone.
For several seconds, Sam remained standing with the Demon Eye Sword raised.
He waited for another attack.
Nothing came.
Finally, his knees buckled.
He fell to the ground, catching himself with one hand.
The system appeared before him.
# HOSTILE ENTITY REPULSED
The encounter has ended. No confirmed kill.
Soul integrity: 93.8%
Soul fragments lost: 2
Hostile entity status: Unknown
Threat classification: Unresolved
Combat assessment: Survival achieved through tactical adaptation and weapon-assisted disruption.
Warning: The hostile entity retains stolen fragments of the user's soul.
No known recovery method is currently available.
Sam stared at the numbers.
He had survived.
But the victory tasted like ash.
He had lost pieces of himself, and the system couldn't tell him whether those pieces could ever be recovered.
He looked toward the ruined building.
The door opened.
Elena rushed out, followed by Daniel and his sister. She reached Sam first, dropping to her knees and wrapping her arms around him.
"Sam! Oh, thank goodness!"
He tried to smile.
"I'm okay."
Elena pulled back just far enough to look at him.
Blood stained his clothes. His skin was pale, and his hands trembled around the sword.
"No, you're not."
Sam had no answer.
Daniel stood nearby, looking between his father and the darkness where the creature had disappeared.
"Did you kill it?"
Sam looked into the night.
"No."
He swallowed.
"I think I made it afraid of me."
Daniel seemed to find that reassuring.
Elena did not.
She held Sam tighter, as though she feared that if she loosened her arms, something else might take him.
For a long time, nobody spoke.
Eventually, Sam allowed Elena to help him back inside.
He checked the children for injuries, reassured them that the creature was gone, and reinforced the doorway with earth magic. He then placed the Demon Eye Sword within reach and remained awake until dawn.
He couldn't sleep.
Every time he closed his eyes, he felt the two missing fragments of his soul.
And somewhere beyond the boundaries of his world, something else felt them too.
Elsewhere..
Far beyond Ooo, in a realm where the sky burned red and the ground groaned beneath the weight of ancient things, the creature fell from a tear in reality.
It struck the black stone of a ruined temple.
For several moments, it could not move.
Its manifested body had been torn apart. Its connection to Ooo was damaged, and the foreign energy it had stolen was spreading through its essence like a poison.
The creature had consumed countless souls.
It had absorbed the memories of warriors, the magic of sorcerers, and the lingering strength of monsters that had believed themselves immortal.
It had never experienced anything like this.
The fragments of Sam's soul refused to dissolve.
They pulsed within its chest, surrounded by dark tendrils that tightened and recoiled as the creature tried to contain them.
Each fragment carried something beyond raw power.
One held traces of Sam's connection to his system, the strange mechanism that measured his growth and allowed him to change.
The other carried deeper impressions of his foreign existence: memories, instincts, and an energy pattern that did not belong to the Nightosphere.
The creature could not understand them.
But it could feel their potential.
And it could feel the danger.
"If I consume them too quickly..." it rasped, its voices overlapping in agony, "they will tear me apart."
It tried to separate the fragments from its essence.
They resisted.
It tried to crush them.
Its entire body convulsed.
The creature screamed, and the sound echoed through the abandoned temple.
For the first time in centuries, it considered the possibility that it had made a terrible mistake.
It had sought a soul capable of helping it challenge Hunson Abadeer.
Instead, it had taken pieces of something that might destroy it from within.
But the creature was not ready to surrender its prize.
It dragged itself toward a chamber beneath the temple. There, surrounded by ancient markings and the remains of long-forgotten offerings, it lowered itself into a circular pit.
The stone around the chamber began to close.
It would need time.
A great deal of time.
Years, perhaps.
Possibly longer.
It would have to enter a state of hibernation, allowing its essence to slowly process the foreign fragments. If it succeeded, it might emerge with power beyond anything it had possessed before.
And if it failed...
The creature refused to consider that possibility.
As the chamber sealed, it thought of Sam standing beneath the storm, holding the strange sword that had wounded it.
It remembered the human's defiance.
The fury in his eyes.
The way he had fought even after discovering that his soul could be stolen.
"Enjoy your little world," the creature whispered.
Its eyes began to close.
"I will return."
The last of its manifested body dissolved into shadow.
The chamber fell silent.
Then the ancient markings activated, one after another, forming a seal around the pit.
The creature entered hibernation.
It would not awaken tomorrow.
It would not awaken next month.
It would spend years processing the pieces it had stolen, slowly transforming itself in the darkness beneath the Nightosphere.
And by the time it opened its eyes again, the world above would have changed.
Sam would have grown stronger.
His family would have travelled farther.
New enemies would have appeared, old threats would have fallen, and Ooo would have continued its endless cycle of strange adventures.
But the creature would remember him.
It would remember the storm.
And it would remember the pain of being wounded by something it had believed to be prey.
Its revenge would wait.
For years, if necessary.
Because some monsters did not need to win today.
They only needed to survive long enough to return.
_
Dawn arrived quietly.
Sam sat outside the ruined building, wrapped in a blanket Elena had insisted he wear. His physical wounds had nearly healed, and the worst of his exhaustion had begun to fade.
But the system's warning remained.
Soul integrity: 93.8%.
He opened his status screen, searching for a clue.
Nothing had changed.
His attributes remained at their newly enhanced values. His traits were intact. His mana flowed normally.
Yet he could no longer ignore the empty space inside him.
He had fought vampires, bounty hunters, dangerous wizards, and monsters that could tear apart entire settlements.
Those enemies had wanted to kill him.
This creature had wanted something worse.
It had looked at his soul and seen an opportunity.
Sam closed the system.
He wasn't going to let fear decide what happened next.
He still had Elena. He still had the children. He still had a world to explore, a library to return to, dungeons to investigate, and enemies whose plans he had yet to uncover.
The Vampire King was still out there.
The cult beneath Wizard City was still preparing its mysterious sealing ritual.
And somewhere in Ooo, other strange powers might already have noticed the storm that had briefly illuminated the grasslands.
Sam stood and looked toward the horizon.
"We're not staying here," he said.
Elena, standing in the doorway, studied his face.
"Where are we going?"
He looked down at the sword in his hand.
"Somewhere safer. Then we're going to find out what that thing did to me—and how to stop it from ever doing it again."
He didn't know that the creature was already beyond his reach.
He didn't know that its stolen fragments would keep it alive through years of agony and transformation.
And he certainly didn't know that, when it finally awakened, it would remember his soul more clearly than it remembered its own name.
For now, Sam had a family to protect.
And Ooo had a thousand strange roads waiting for him.
The storm moved on. The darkness waited.
