The ruined highway fell quiet again.
Sam lowered himself onto a broken concrete slab, exhaustion finally catching up to him. His breathing was uneven, muscles trembling from the chained battles... vampires, rainicorns, fused oozer, and now a bounty hunter.
He wiped sweat from his forehead.
"…I need a break," he muttered.
For a few minutes he just sat there, letting the wind cool his body. The faint crackle of lightning around him faded as he suppressed his mana output. After resting, he slowly stood and began walking south along the shattered road, scanning for a safe place to recover.
Burned-out vehicles.
Collapsed signs.
Dry desert stretching endlessly.
Then
DING
The system screen appeared abruptly, brighter than usual.
Sam frowned.
"Another daily task already?"
But the notification was different.
SPECIAL MISSION TRIGGERED
Objective: Find Elena and her children
Priority: High
Additional Information: Elena is pregnant
Sam stopped walking.
His mind went blank.
"…what?"
He read it again.
And again.
The words didn't change.
Pregnant.
For nearly thirty seconds, he didn't move.
Then he sat down again, staring at the screen like it might disappear.
"…pregnant…"
Time passed.
Five minutes.
Ten.
The wind picked up sand around him but he didn't notice. His thoughts raced memories of Elena smiling, the night before he left, the promise to return stronger, the colony by the coast.
Twenty minutes passed.
He still hadn't moved.
His heart beat faster now, not from combat, but something else entirely. Responsibility. Shock. Fear. Hope. All tangled together.
"…mine?" he whispered quietly.
The system remained silent, but the mission indicator pulsed steadily, confirming its importance.
Thirty minutes later, Sam finally stood.
His expression had changed.
No hesitation.
No casual wandering.
Only focus.
Lightning began to flicker around him again but softer this time, controlled.
"…I need to find her."
For the first time since gaining power, his goal wasn't just survival or growth.
It was them.
Sam didn't even open the reward panel.
The system notification remained in the corner of his vision, ignored. For once, experience, stats, and traits didn't matter. Only one thing did.
He turned and began moving.
Not sprinting.. not yet. He forced himself to stay controlled, conserving stamina. The journey could be long.
Hours passed as he traveled back across the wasteland, retracing his previous routes. The sun shifted slowly overhead, the air growing warmer. His thoughts remained heavy, replaying the system message again and again.
Eventually, the broken silhouette of the Evergreen Library appeared in the distance.
The ancient structure stood quietly, half-buried in sand. Sam approached carefully, pushing open the worn doors. Dust floated in the shafts of sunlight. The familiar scent of old paper and dry stone greeted him.
He moved methodically.
Not studying.
Not exploring.
Just gathering.
He took preserved rations, filling a worn satchel. He grabbed a spare mana crystal, a basic healing salve, and a few scrolls he hadn't fully deciphered yet. He also picked up a reinforced cloak.. something to shield against desert winds.
Before leaving, he paused for a moment.
This place had been his sanctuary.
Now it felt… temporary.
"…I'll come back," he murmured quietly.
Then he left.
The journey continued.
By late afternoon, Sam reached the ruined store... the place where he and Elena had once rested. The building was partially collapsed, the sign barely hanging by a single bolt. The memory hit him harder than expected.
He stepped inside slowly.
The dusty floor.
The broken shelves.
The corner where they had slept.
Everything was still.
He crouched near the entrance, scanning the ground. His Perception activated instinctively. Faint tracks... almost erased by wind, stretched outward toward the coast.
Multiple footprints.
Some small... the children.
One heavier.. Elena.
His chest tightened.
"They went this way…"
He stood and began following the tracks.
Not running.
Walking.
Slow and careful.
The wind occasionally erased sections, forcing him to stop and search again. He examined disturbed sand, broken twigs, and faint impressions left in dried mud. Hours passed in silence.
The sun dipped lower, casting long shadows across the wasteland.
Sam continued forward, step by step.
Every footprint he found made his pace slightly faster.
Every lost trail made him tense.
The sky darkened gradually, clouds forming far above... responding faintly to his emotions. Low thunder rolled in the distance, soft and restrained.
He didn't notice.
He just kept walking.
The trail grew harder to follow.
Wind erased more with every passing hour.
Sam walked slower now, scanning every inch of ground. A faint heel mark. A disturbed patch of sand. A snapped twig. Each clue pulled him forward.
The sky dimmed into late evening.
Then
His perception spiked.
Too late.
The ground beneath him shifted.
Stone erupted upward.
A jagged spike shot toward his chest.
Sam twisted at the last second
but it still tore across his side, throwing him backward.
He hit the ground hard, rolling, instinct kicking in.
A figure rose from the earth itself.
Red skin.
Three glowing eyes aligned vertically.
Cracks of stone energy pulsed along his arms.
A bounty hunter.
Earth mage.
He spoke in a low, distorted tone.
"aahh... Lightning wizard… found you."
Sam forced himself up, gripping his sword.
"…another one…"
The ground trembled again.
This one didn't waste time.
Stone pillars erupted from multiple directions.
Sam jumped..
but midair, the pillars shifted direction.
Tracking.
"wha..?!"
One slammed into him.
CRACK
He was thrown across the ground, his right arm snapping on impact.
Pain shot through him instantly.
He barely had time to react before the earth beneath him liquefied into a stone trap, pulling his legs downward.
"Got you."
The mage raised both hands.
Massive stone hands formed above Sam, preparing to crush him.
Sam's breathing became sharp.
Fast.
His mind raced.
No time.
No space.
No advantage.
"…move…"
He forced lightning through his broken arm.
Pain exploded..but the current still flowed.
He slammed his hand into the ground.
Static Field... burst release
Electricity surged outward violently.
The stone trap cracked.
Sam ripped himself free at the last second as the giant stone hands slammed down where he had been.
BOOM
Dust filled the air.
Sam staggered to his feet.
His arm hung useless.
His right leg bled heavily from deep cuts.
The earth mage stepped forward calmly.
"You're weaker than the reports said."
Sam smiled faintly.
"…you talk too much…"
The mage raised his hand again
But Sam moved first.
He sprinted.
Not away
toward him.
The mage's eyes widened slightly.
Stone spikes erupted.
Sam dodged two—
The third pierced his leg deeper—
He didn't stop.
He pushed through the pain.
Lightning surged violently across his body.
He closed the distance.
The mage tried to raise a barrier
Too slow.
Sam grabbed him by the neck.
Activated Blood Siphon.
The mage's eyes widened in horror.
"…what... "
Energy drained instantly.
Life force.
Mana.
Everything.
Sam held on despite the pain, despite the broken arm, despite the blood loss.
The mage struggled
Then weakened
Then collapsed.
Sam dropped him.
Silence.
Only wind.
Sam staggered backward, breathing heavily.
His body shook.
"…that was… close…"
Too close.
He looked down at his injuries.
Broken arm.
Deep leg wounds.
Blood everywhere.
But slowly
Very slowly
The siphoned energy began working.
His body started repairing itself.
Not instantly.
But steadily.
Bone knitting.
Muscle regenerating.
Bleeding slowing.
Sam exhaled shakily.
"…good thing… that works…"
The system chimed.

Sam stared at the screen.
"…earth magic…"
Not strong.
But it was something.
Another layer added to his growing arsenal.
Another step in evolution.
He looked at the corpse briefly.
Then turned away.
No time to rest.
No time to recover fully.
He started walking again.
Limping slightly.
Body still healing.
Mind focused.
Following the trail.
Toward Elena.
Toward his child.
The storm moved forward… no matter the cost.
Sam walked until the desert slowly gave way to scattered vegetation… then thicker trees… then a quiet, shadowed forest.
Only when the wind was blocked and the world grew still did he finally stop.
His body was still repairing itself. The broken arm had mostly set, though it throbbed faintly. His leg wounds had closed enough to walk, but not fight at full strength.
He leaned against a tree and finally, finally... opened the system fully.

Sam stared at the screen quietly.
He had grown.
A lot.
Stronger than anything he used to be.
But still…
Not enough.
Not yet.
"…I need to move faster," he muttered.
His gaze drifted westward.
Toward the coast.
Toward Elena.
Toward something more important than power.
Nightfall
Forest Camp
Sam moved deeper into the forest before stopping again.
This time, to rest properly.
He chose a spot between thick trees, naturally hidden from open sight. Using his sword, he cleared a small area and set up a simple camp.
No fire.
Too risky.
Instead, he used a faint static aura to keep small creatures away.
He leaned against a tree, cloak wrapped around him.
The forest was quiet.
Calm.
Almost peaceful.
For the first time in days… there were no explosions, no enemies, no screams.
Just wind through leaves.
Sam closed his eyes.
One hand rested lightly over his chest.
"…hang on…"
Whether he meant Elena…
Or the child…
Even he wasn't sure.
Above the forest, faint storm clouds gathered silently… as if following him.
