Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: The Squad

The screen in Daniel's room flickered back on.

"Coach Daniel — Squad Assignment Complete."

A digital roster appeared in front of him.

He stepped closer.

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

The screen finished loading.

Daniel stepped back slowly.

The squad wasn't weak.

But it wasn't balanced either.

He spoke quietly.

"Fast wings. Fragile midfield. Slow defense. Emotional striker."

He exhaled.

"They're testing adaptability."

Because this team could either:

Score 4 goals.Or concede 5.

No in-between.

His roommate, Ayo leaned over.

"So what's the plan, Coach?" he smirks

Daniel stared at the formation screen.

"You don't play open football with this squad."

His eyes moved to Volkov and Price.

"You protect the brain."

Then to the wings.

"And you weaponize the speed."

He tapped the screen.

The default 4-3-3 disappeared.

A new layout began forming.

And for the first time…

Daniel smiled.

He tapped the formation panel and rearranged it into his preferred 4-1-2-3:

Back four: Mason Cole (LB), Luis Ortega (CB), Victor Kane (CB), Kai Ren (RB)Defensive Mid: Artem Volkov (shielding the backline)Central Mids: Jaden Price + Rafael SilvaFront three: Dante Okoye (LW), Leon Dray (ST), Noah Blake (RW)

Daniel's logic was clear:

Protect the brain. Protect Volkov and Price.

Exploit the open spaces with the wings.

Keep Dray focused and composed.

He tapped "Confirm Formation."

Matchday Announcement

The screen shifted.

"Preliminary Stage — Matchday 1 Schedule"

A virtual board appeared, showing all matches across the ten groups.

Daniel's eyes scanned quickly.

His group flashed on the left side: Group E

Next to his name:

Daniel Adebayo vs Ibrahim Sule

Matchday 1 — Two Days from Now

Daniel felt a familiar spark of adrenaline.

Two days to analyze his squad. Two days to prepare. Two days to think.

He glanced at his roommates.

Tunde adjusted his glasses and leaned closer.

"So… your facing Sule first."

Ayo grinned.

"Big chance to show off your wings, Coach."

Chinedu, as always, said nothing. He only stared at the screen. Quiet. Calculating. Observing.

Daniel exhaled slowly.

This is it. Real competition starts soon.

The screen added one final note:

"Player assignments are fixed. In-game adjustments limited to three strategic changes. Player morale and fatigue are dynamic. Efficiency of tactics and adaptation will be recorded for evaluation."

Daniel tapped the desk.

"Alright," he said calmly. "Let's get to work. Two days isn't much time… but it's enough."

He looked at his squad stats one more time, imagining how each would react on the pitch.

The wings. The fragile midfield. The slow center backs. The fiery striker.

It would all come down to how well he could manage them.

And for the first time, Daniel felt the thrill he had always sought —

Not in a game controller.

Not in a simulation.

But in real responsibility, with consequences
