Chapter 44 - Chapter 9: July 9th — He Is Coming

3:47 AM.

U.A. was silent.

Red fog machines were primed but dormant.

Metal panels sealed into place.

Fake warning signs hung crookedly.

Props were added overnight:

Scattered hard hats.

Fake broken tools.

Mannequins posed as "fallen workers."

Carefully applied stage blood — dark, dramatic, but clearly artificial on close inspection.

Mina had outdone herself.

Denki adjusted one last flickering light.

"Okay," he whispered. "This is cinema."

In the common room behind the final steel door:

Crimson and gold fort.

Root beer chilled.

Cake centered.

Eighteen candles.

Everyone hiding.

Waiting.

🎭 4:00 AM — Dorm Hallway

Kaito stood outside Ren's door.

Heart pounding.

He looked down the hallway.

Hidden behind a corner, Kirishima and Denki held the Prototype prop arm rig — a mechanical grab system attached to retractable wire, controlled by Sero and Yaoyorozu down the hall.

Totally safe.

Totally rehearsed.

Kaito inhaled.

Then—

He burst into the room.

"REN! REN!! WAKE UP!"

Ren jolted upright instantly.

"What—?"

Kaito grabbed his shoulders dramatically.

"HE IS COMING— HURR—"

The wall vent exploded outward with red smoke.

A massive gray foam-and-metal hand shot from the darkness.

The Prototype.

It latched around Kaito's waist.

"WHAT THE—" Ren started—

The hand yanked Kaito backward across the floor.

"REN RUN—!"

And he was dragged out the door.

Smoke filled the hallway.

Red lights flickered on.

A low industrial siren hummed to life.

Ren sat frozen for half a second.

"…You have GOT to be kidding me."

Then—

He saw it.

A blood-smeared note pinned to the wall.

"Welcome back."

Under it—

A pair of red magnet cuffs.

The GrabPack.

Ren blinked.

Slowly.

"…No."

He stood up.

Walked to the doorway.

Red fog rolled past his feet.

Distant metallic clanging echoed down the hall.

From somewhere deeper in the building—

A distorted voice over speakers:

"Playtime has begun."

Ren stared at the cuffs.

Then at the hallway.

Then sighed.

"…They built the whole thing, didn't they."

He slipped on the GrabPack.

The mechanism hummed to life.

Magnetic hands flexed once.

A slow smile crept onto his face.

"Oh, we're doing this."

🏭 The Trail Begins

He stepped into the hallway.

Fog thick.

Fake blood splattered along metal walls.

Props of fallen "workers" scattered in staged chaos.

One mannequin's hand held a note:

"Factory Grounds → Courtyard"

A puzzle lock blocked the stairwell.

Ren raised the GrabPack.

Fired.

The red hand latched onto a distant lever.

Pulled.

Click.

Door unlocked.

He laughed quietly.

"This is insane."

He ran.

Down the stairs.

Through corridors.

Past Lily Lovebraids suspended dramatically from ceiling tracks.

Past blinking red warning lights.

Into the courtyard.

Fog drifted low across the grass.

Crates stacked like maze walls.

Another note.

"He's watching."

A silhouette moved behind a fog curtain.

Ren didn't flinch.

He activated the second magnet hand and solved the courtyard puzzle in under thirty seconds.

From behind a crate—

Denki whispered, "HE'S SPEEDRUNNING."

Mina smacked him.

🔥 Training Yard — Final Trial

The yard looked like abandoned factory ruins.

Red banners.

Metal plates.

Warning tape.

In the center—

The Prototype.

Full build.

Tall.

Shadowed.

Imposing.

Its mechanical arm twitched slightly (thanks to hidden wiring).

And at its base—

Kaito, tied loosely to a chair, overacting dramatically.

"REN!"

Ren stopped ten feet away.

He folded his arms.

"…You're enjoying this."

Kaito grinned.

"Maybe a little."

The Prototype arm swung forward.

Ren reacted instantly.

Fire flickered across his palm—

Just enough to illuminate the fog.

The class watching from hidden positions collectively held their breath.

He launched the GrabPack.

Magnet hand latched onto a suspended power core prop above.

Pulled.

The Prototype lights flickered out.

Smoke burst upward.

The arm dropped harmlessly.

Silence.

Then—

A final door at the edge of the yard slid open.

Steel.

Labeled:

AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY

Ren stared at it.

Breathing steady.

He walked forward.

Opened it.

🎉 The Reveal

The steel panel lifted.

Fog cleared.

Crimson and gold flooded his vision.

Fort walls built high.

Anime posters subtly incorporated into decor.

A small table labeled:

Lore Corner

Root beer station.

Eighteen candles glowing softly.

And all of Class 1-A standing together.

"Happy Birthday, Ren."

Silence.

No loud jump scare.

No explosions.

Just warmth.

Ren blinked once.

Twice.

He looked at the cake.

At the decorations.

At the subtle horror-game references.

At the GrabPack still on his arms.

At Kaito.

"…You idiots," he said quietly.

Mina panicked.

"Is that good or bad—"

Ren stepped forward.

A faint laugh escaping him.

"You turned the entire school into a toy factory."

Kirishima grinned.

"Manliest birthday ever."

Denki pointed at the fog.

"Safe fog!"

Todoroki nodded slightly.

"We calculated airflow."

Ren looked around slowly.

Taking it all in.

The fort.

The colors.

The details.

The effort.

Eighteen candles.

Kaito stepped forward.

"Happy birthday."

Ren stared at the candles.

"…Eighteen?"

Kaito nodded.

"You said you were seventeen."

A small pause.

"You're not anymore."

Ren swallowed.

The room was quiet.

No sirens.

No red lights.

Just friends.

He closed his eyes briefly.

Then blew out the candles.

Applause erupted.

Bakugou muttered, "Don't cry."

Ren opened his eyes.

"…I'm not."

But his voice wasn't as steady as usual.

Outside the Gates

That black vehicle stopped one final time.

Its driver watching U.A.'s lit windows from a distance.

A tablet screen displayed:

Subject: Ren — Age 18 confirmed.

A finger tapped the screen.

"Proceed to Phase Two."

The vehicle drove off into the night.
