Chapter 3 - Chapter 3 – The Assistant’s Disguise

Before dawn, Adrian Chen summoned Marcus Wu into his office. The city skyline glowed faintly behind him, but Adrian's eyes were sharper than the morning light.

"Marcus," he said in a low, calm voice, "if you reveal my identity to Elena, even by accident, you'll be fired. No excuses, no second chances."

Marcus swallowed hard, forcing a smile. "Sir, I wouldn't dare. But you're asking me to orchestrate something unusual. Becoming her assistant? That's not exactly in the CEO handbook."

Adrian's tone softened, but his words carried steel. "Do everything carefully. Every schedule, every assignment, every detail must be perfect. She must never suspect who I am. If she does, this plan fails."

Marcus nodded quickly, though inside he trembled. Scolding the CEO later would be terrifying, but he had no choice.

That morning, Adrian dressed simply: a crisp white shirt, no tie, no aura of authority. He looked almost ordinary, though his posture betrayed the discipline of a man used to command.

When Elena Li arrived at her desk, she was surprised to see him standing there with a polite smile.

"You again?" she asked, blinking.

Adrian nodded. "I've been assigned as your assistant. I'll help you with tasks, carry documents, and make sure you don't get lost in this maze of a company."

She tilted her head, uncertain. "My assistant? But… you don't look like one."

He chuckled lightly. "Maybe I'm new at this. But I'll do my best."

From that moment, Adrian threw himself into the role.

When Elena needed coffee, he asked carefully, "Do you prefer black or with milk?"

She hesitated, then said, "Milk, two sugars."

Adrian memorized it instantly. He returned minutes later with the cup, setting it gently on her desk. "Milk, two sugars. Exactly as you like."

She blinked, surprised. "You remembered?"

He smiled simply. "It's my job."

Later, when she struggled with a stack of reports, Adrian appeared at her side. "These are the finance documents for the quarterly review," he explained, handing her neatly arranged folders. "I've marked the sections you'll need to focus on as an intern — the expense breakdowns, the revenue charts, and the client summaries. The rest is background."

Elena looked at the organized files, impressed. "You did all this?"

He nodded. "It saves you time."

She smiled gratefully. "You're very thorough."

In the afternoon, Adrian and Marcus were discussing an urgent matter in hushed tones near Elena's desk. Marcus leaned close, whispering about a board directive that needed Adrian's approval.

Elena noticed and frowned. "What are you two talking about?" she asked curiously.

Marcus froze. His heart raced — he couldn't let her suspect Adrian's true role. Thinking quickly, he raised his voice and scolded Adrian. "Chen, you're late with the reports again! Do you think you can slack off just because you're her assistant?"

Adrian bowed his head obediently, playing along. "Sorry, I'll be faster."

Elena watched, confused. "Wait… you're being scolded?"

Marcus forced a stern look, though inside he was terrified. He was scolding his boss, the CEO, and if Adrian took offense, his career would end. But Adrian's faint smile reassured him.

Marcus turned to Elena with a smile. "Don't let him fool you. He may look dependable, but he needs discipline."

Elena giggled, covering her mouth. "So even assistants get bossed around."

Adrian sighed dramatically. "It seems I'm doomed to be everyone's servant."

She laughed again, the sound warming his heart.

As the day ended, Elena gathered her things. Adrian walked her to the elevator, carrying her files. "Here are tomorrow's documents," he explained. "I've highlighted the sections you'll need the client meeting notes, the marketing drafts, and the HR guidelines. And don't forget, your orientation session starts at ten sharp."

She looked at him, surprised. "You're more organized than I am."

He smiled modestly. "That's what assistants are for."

The elevator doors closed, and she left, unaware of the storm of emotions inside him.

That night, Adrian sat in his penthouse, replaying the day. He thought of her smile when he brought her coffee, her gratitude when he handed her documents, her laughter when Marcus scolded him. Every detail mattered.

He touched the ribbon hidden beneath his sleeve and whispered, "Step by step, Elena. I'll remind you of the promise. I'll make you see me again."
