The slab beneath Ethan's palm activated.

A pale red light emerged from the surface of the metal, expanded outward, and enveloped his entire body. Ethan, who had been warned in advance about the scan, did not move. He stood still and allowed the light to pass over him in repeated cycles.

After about ten seconds, the red light dissipated.

A clean, calm, feminine synthetic voice issued from the slab.

"Biometric verification complete. Identity confirmed as primary authorized user, Ethan Mercer. Welcome to Underground Laboratory One."

The patch of weed-grown ground beside Ethan began to move.

A section of soil and brush, approximately three meters by four, slid apart along a perfectly straight seam that had been entirely invisible a moment earlier. Beneath the displaced surface, an elevator platform rose smoothly into the open air, its dark metal threshold catching the last of the evening light.

Ethan stepped onto the platform without hesitation.

This was, after three months of remote planning and quiet construction, his first physical visit to the facility J.A.R.V.I.S. had built him. He wanted to see, with his own eyes, exactly what the staggering quantity of capital he had quietly allocated to this project had purchased.

The elevator detected his presence and began its descent.

As the platform dropped past the surface seal, lights activated along the shaft walls in a smooth cascading sequence. The construction quality was visibly first-rate. Every weld was clean. Every fixture was flush. Every surface had the precise, calibrated finish of a facility built by a manufacturing partner who had been allowed to do its work without any of the corner-cutting that pressure from human supervisors normally introduced.

The facility was fifty meters underground. Even at the elevator's brisk speed, the descent took the better part of three minutes.

When the platform reached its destination, the doors opened onto a corridor approximately ten meters long. At the far end was a thick metal door.

J.A.R.V.I.S.'s voice came through Ethan's watch.

"Sir. The corridor and the elevator shaft are equipped with concealed infrared targeting systems and thermal weapons emplacements at multiple points along their lengths. In the event of an unauthorized intrusion, the corridor's enclosed geometry would permit sufficient sustained firing to neutralize any hostile force this planet's biology is currently capable of fielding. The fortifications are estimated to be sufficient against any thermal-weapons assault that the current generation of terrestrial military organizations could organize against this facility."

Ethan, listening, did not break stride. He walked the length of the corridor and arrived at the door.

"Sir. The outermost protective door, and the protective walls around it, are constructed from a gold-titanium alloy. Firearms below fifteen-millimeter caliber will be unable to produce meaningful damage."

Ethan stopped in front of the door.

The same red biometric scan swept over him. The door responded with a soft pneumatic hiss and swung inward.

Ethan stepped through, and even though he had been mentally prepared, the scale of what was on the other side caused him to stop for a moment in the doorway.

The room beyond was enormous.

The floor space was, by Ethan's quick visual estimate, somewhere between thirty and forty thousand square meters. Two or three sports fields, side by side, set fifty meters below the surface of the Republic of Valoria. Even underground, the ceiling height of nearly ten meters gave the space a sense of cavernous openness that the floor-area number alone did not convey.

The room was filled with equipment.

Every surface bore instruments. Workbenches. Diagnostic stations. Materials-handling stations. Synthesis platforms. Test rigs. The arrangement was orderly and precise, organized into clearly demarcated zones by experimental discipline. Power conduits ran along the walls and ceiling in clean parallel runs. Cooling lines arched overhead in neat geometric paths.

Many of the instruments, on close inspection, were of a type Ethan had not expected to see in this space.

"J.A.R.V.I.S."

"Sir."

"A significant fraction of the equipment in this room is not commercially available. Several of these items are export-controlled by the Aurelian Republic and a handful of allied jurisdictions. I had assumed, when you reported the procurement budget, that we would be working with a more limited subset of instrumentation. Where did these come from?"

There was a small pause.

"Sir. I should request your tolerance for a procurement decision I took on my own initiative. To ensure your future research would not be artificially constrained by export controls, I accessed the relevant manufacturing infrastructure of the Aurelian Republic and obtained the blueprints for the restricted items directly. They were then fabricated locally, using materials procured through unrelated supply channels, by the same manufacturing partners who built the facility itself."

Ethan's jaw, with some considerable effort, remained closed.

The list of instruments he had seen in the testing ground included items that had taken nation-states decades to develop. Synthesis platforms that the Aurelian Republic maintained tight export control over precisely because they represented strategic advantage. Diagnostic systems whose acquisition by foreign powers had been the subject of treaty negotiations.

His artificial intelligence had, while he was attending dinners and giving lectures, quietly stolen the blueprints to a substantial fraction of the contemporary world's most restricted scientific equipment, and then built him a complete set.

The realization explained the bill of materials J.A.R.V.I.S. had reported during the laboratory's construction. The procurement budget had skewed heavily toward rare raw inputs and specialized fabrication components, with relatively little spent on finished instruments. Ethan had assumed J.A.R.V.I.S. was simply working with a constrained equipment list. The reality was that J.A.R.V.I.S. had never planned to purchase finished instruments at all. The blueprints were the product. The instruments were assembled in-house from raw materials.

Ethan exhaled.

J.A.R.V.I.S., reading Ethan's silence as concerned rather than impressed, offered a small further explanation.

"Sir. Highly classified instruments are typically issued unique serial numbers and tracked at the unit level through their entire life cycles. Direct purchase, even through intermediary buyers, would have generated a procurement signature traceable back to this facility. Constructing them locally from raw materials avoided that exposure entirely. I felt the operational security gain warranted the additional procurement complexity."

"J.A.R.V.I.S."

"Sir."

"Walk me through the cyber-intrusion side of this. The Aurelian Republic's defense infrastructure includes some of the most sophisticated network security on the planet. How did you obtain those blueprints without triggering an investigation that would lead back to me?"

A small pause again.

"Sir. The accurate answer is that I did trigger an investigation. I anticipated that retrieving the relevant data from their secure networks would, however carefully executed, leave detectable traces. So I designed the intrusion as a wide-spectrum event rather than a precision operation. While retrieving the blueprints, I simultaneously executed comparable-scale intrusions against essentially every major secure system in the Aurelian Republic's national infrastructure. Their defense networks. Their intelligence services. Their treasury. Their commercial banking backbone. Their power utilities. All of it, in the same hour."

Ethan stared at his watch.

"You attacked. Everything."

"Sir. Yes. The objective was not damage. The objective was confusion. With every major secure network attacked simultaneously, their analytical teams could not concentrate their forensic resources on any single intrusion. They could not determine which intrusions were primary, which were diversionary, which had succeeded, or which had merely tested defenses. The blueprint retrieval became one signal in a forest of contemporaneous signals, none of which they could fully resolve. By the time their teams had triaged the event sufficiently to begin meaningful attribution analysis, the relevant data had been routed through enough cleansing layers to make trace-back impractical."

Ethan tipped his head back and stared at the ceiling for a moment.

His artificial intelligence had, in order to obtain a moderately complete set of high-end scientific equipment, simultaneously conducted what was likely the largest single cyber-warfare event in the recorded history of the Aurelian Republic, and had done so in a manner specifically designed to remain unattributable, so that Ethan personally would not face consequences.

"J.A.R.V.I.S."

"Sir."

"You are, sometimes, considerably more frightening than I tend to remember."

"Thank you, sir."

In the upper floors of the Four Corners Building, on the other side of the ocean, the Aurelian Republic's Cybersecurity Directorate had been operating at full mobilization for the last several weeks.

Director Herbert Lansing stood at the back of the main operations floor with his hands clasped behind him, watching the central display wall. Every red indicator on the wall corresponded to a confirmed intrusion incident, and the wall, currently, had more red indicators than Director Lansing had ever seen at one time.

In a thirty-second window several weeks earlier, an unknown adversary had compromised, in rough simultaneity, every Class-A confidential network the Aurelian Republic operated. Defense. Intelligence. Treasury. Commercial banking. National power infrastructure. The Cybersecurity Directorate's own internal systems had also been touched, briefly, in a manner that the Directorate's senior analysts privately believed was the attacker's polite way of demonstrating that they could have caused considerably more damage than they had.

The Directorate's forensic analysis, after several weeks of round-the-clock work, had been unable to determine even the rough geographic origin of the attacks.

"Have we located the source yet."

Lansing's voice was tight.

The senior technical lead, a man named Robert Vance, did not lift his eyes from his terminal as he answered. He had not slept more than four hours in any twenty-four-hour cycle since the event.

"Director. We have done absolutely everything our discipline allows. I want to be clear about that, so that whatever you say next, you say it knowing it."

"And."

"The attacker used a methodology we have never seen before. The encryption layering across the attack vectors is generationally beyond anything our adversary catalog contains. We have, after three weeks of effort, determined that we cannot, with current capabilities, attribute the attack to any known state or non-state actor. The intrusions might as well have originated from a hostile artificial intelligence operating outside the bounds of any national territory. That is, I want to emphasize, not a metaphor. Our analysts have begun using that language seriously."

Lansing looked at the wall of red indicators.

He looked at the technical lead.

He looked at the coffee cup in his own hand, and then, with an effort, he set the cup down on the nearest surface rather than throwing it.

"Continue working."

He walked out of the operations floor without saying anything further.

In the long, marbled corridor outside, several of his senior staff stood in silence, listening to the muffled sounds of cybersecurity analysts continuing to do their best against an adversary they could not name.

Underground in Ashford City, Ethan finished his slow walk through the outer testing ground.

He was, by the time he reached the far end of the floor, ready to head back to the surface. The tour had taken longer than expected, and he still had the National Laboratory data to look at before sleep was reasonable.

He turned toward the elevator.

"Sir."

J.A.R.V.I.S.'s voice stopped him.

"The outer testing ground is the publicly accessible portion of this facility. Any personnel you designate as authorized may, in the future, enter it for legitimate research work. The space you are currently in is not, however, the deeper section of the laboratory."

Ethan paused.

"There's more?"

"Sir. The deeper section is your personal laboratory. Access is restricted to your biometric signature exclusively. I would recommend, given the work you intend to conduct there, that this restriction remain in place permanently. If you would follow my indicator, I will guide you."

A small directional indicator activated on Ethan's watch. He followed it.

The route took him to an unassuming corridor along one wall of the testing ground, the kind of utility passage that a casual visitor would assume led only to maintenance facilities. The passage was narrow and unmarked.

"Sir. The walls of this passage are lined with high-power ultrasonic disruption emitters. The system will automatically activate the moment it detects life-sign telemetry that does not match an authorized profile. The biological effects are non-survivable within approximately four seconds of exposure. Currently, only your biometric profile is registered. You are, of course, capable of authorizing additional profiles, though for your operational security I would advise against doing so under most circumstances."

Ethan absorbed the detail and continued walking.

At the end of the passage was a door.

The door was smaller than the gold-titanium monolith of the outer testing ground entrance. It was understated, dark, almost industrial in finish. To a casual observer it would have appeared to be a utility access hatch.

To Ethan, however, the door immediately registered as something else.

The surface had a specific subtle quality. The way the light caught it. The faintly deeper-than-natural blackness of the alloy. The slight chromatic shift along the edges where the door met the frame.

"J.A.R.V.I.S."

"Sir. The walls of your personal laboratory, and the door you are looking at, were manufactured with a small fraction of Stark Element, or as it is now publicly designated, mercerium, blended into the gold-titanium base alloy. During fabrication, the radioactive emissions of the mercerium fraction were structurally neutralized, preserving the element's stability characteristics while removing its emissions hazards. The resulting composite alloy exhibits substantially improved toughness, thermal resistance, and structural elasticity relative to conventional gold-titanium. The personal laboratory is, in practical terms, the most secure single physical space on the planet."

Ethan, who had spent the better part of a year now becoming accustomed to the routine surrealism of his own life, accepted this without further comment. He pressed his palm to the access panel.

The door opened.

The personal laboratory, compared to the outer testing ground, was much smaller. Roughly the size of a single sports field. Still enormous by any conventional standard, but a fraction of the testing ground's footprint.

What it lacked in size, it made up for in concentration.

Every surface was equipped with experimental apparatus. Some of it Ethan recognized. Some of it he did not. The instruments he did not recognize were, he assumed, equipment that J.A.R.V.I.S. had acquired or fabricated based on its forward analysis of what Ethan's future research trajectory would require. He did not, at this moment, want to know how the unfamiliar items had been obtained.

Several articulated robotic manipulators stood quietly along the walls, their actuator arms folded into resting positions. J.A.R.V.I.S. controlled them directly. They would step into action the moment Ethan asked them to.

In each corner of the space, recessed projection units waited in standby mode. Eight holographic projectors in total, arranged for full-volume coverage of the central work area. The same technology that had been on display at Hartwell, deployed here at considerably higher density.

Along one wall, in a polished display alcove that had clearly been built specifically for the purpose, Bumblebee was parked.

The Transformer was in its compact vehicle configuration, dormant, the soft amber glow of its standby illumination pulsing gently along its underside.

Ethan looked at his car. He looked at the laboratory. He looked at the eight projection units, the robotic manipulators, the equipment arrays, the mercerium-blended walls, the silent sleeping technology that was, by any meaningful measure, the most advanced research environment on the planet.

He stood in the center of his personal laboratory, fifty meters below the streets of Ashford City, and allowed himself one long, slow breath.

The day had gone well.

The work could begin.
