Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: The First Gate Approaches

Sunlight cut through the worn curtains of Kai Anderson's small apartment, spilling across the floorboards and illuminating the dust motes dancing in the morning air. His pulse did not slow. The golden system interface floated before him, pulsating faintly with a rhythm that seemed almost alive. Every shimmer reminded him of one absolute fact: he had been chosen.

[Main Quest Active]

Prepare for the First Gate.

Reward: Unlock Unique Privilege #2

Failure: Permanent Death

Kai clenched his fists, feeling the raw surge of anticipation. His apartment, the streets outside, even the distant hum of the city—all familiar. But familiarity was meaningless. This time, he carried knowledge no one else could touch. He remembered every detail of the first catastrophic Gate: the traps, the monster spawns, the dungeon layouts. He remembered the deaths, the screams, the helplessness of five years ago—and he would not repeat them.

Two months. That was all he had. Two months to grow beyond the limits that had crushed him before. Two months to become untouchable. Two months to turn the world into a place where the weak could not survive—and where he would dominate.

Kai opened his status screen:

STR: 5

AGI: 6

VIT: 4

INT: 7

Authority Points: 0

Weak. Pathetic. Absolutely pitiful.

"Absolute Growth," the system reminded him. A privilege with no limits, no ceiling. Everything he did, every motion, every exertion would feed his strength. Every drop of sweat, every strike, every step counted.

He stepped into the empty streets, sprinting, vaulting over broken benches, swinging from lampposts, striking imaginary enemies. Muscle memory expanded; new combat techniques burned into his body. Instinct sharpened beyond ordinary humans. Hours passed, though in the system's calculation, every microsecond mattered. His muscles screamed, his lungs burned, yet a thrill coursed through him. He was alive, truly alive.

He paused to test his first new skill: Adaptive Weapon Proficiency. Any weapon he touched, he could master in hours. He grabbed a rusted blade, and instantly, knowledge poured into him. Sword strikes, parries, spins, thrusts—all executed perfectly without thought. Even an S-Rank Hunter would have been impressed. He slashed through a crate effortlessly, feeling power surge through him. Authority points increased, his STR and AGI rising sharply.

Satisfied, he turned to resources. Abandoned warehouses hid low-tier weapons, light armor, and basic potions—tools untouched from five years prior. Material Transmutation transformed rusted swords into tempered steel, fragile armor into reinforced alloys. Each action reinforced his growth, sharpened his advantage, and reminded him of the distance he had to cover before the Gate arrived.

By evening, the sky dimmed and faint ripples shimmered high above—the first sign of Gate activity. Kai perched on a rooftop, observing. Civilians wandered obliviously. Hunters rushed in blindly. The system fed him live data of every movement. Every step, every shadow, every flicker of light was a calculation. One misstep could mean death.

From the shadows, a humanoid creature emerged. Smaller than the final boss but lethal: claws glinting like polished obsidian, movements fluid and precise. Most hunters would hesitate. Kai lunged. The golden aura of the system enveloped his hands. Muscle memory guided his strike. The creature swiped; he rolled, countered, and the blade met flesh. It collapsed instantly.

Authority points surged. Kai felt the thrill of perfection—control, power, dominance. But victory was fleeting. On a distant rooftop, a figure watched. Human—or almost human. Its aura faint but undeniable. The system alerted him: Hidden Debt Detected. No further information. Someone—or something—knew about him. Every action, every decision, could be observed and exploited.

Kai's grin widened. This was not a second chance. This was a battlefield. Every strike now mattered more than life itself.

He descended to the streets, observing the early spawns. Smaller creatures skittered from the shadows—humanoid but malformed, eyes burning red, claws like knives. Kai moved, faster than humanly possible. Golden aura flared as he cut, dodged, and spun, each movement augmented by the system. Every kill added sparks of energy to his body, accelerating his growth.

Hours passed. Night deepened. The faint ripple of the Gate glimmered in the distance. A massive, deliberate vibration shook the streets. The first true challenge approached. A figure emerged, towering and humanoid, yet twisted. A mask fused to its face, claws longer than his blade, aura radiating raw, terrifying power. The first S-Rank—or beyond—threat of this timeline.

Kai's muscles tensed. His system pulsed, golden and vibrant. Authority Points surged as it synchronized with his instincts. Strategies unfolded in his mind: movement patterns, weak points, attack sequences, possible traps. Every lesson from the past five years crystallized in his mind, forming a plan.

The creature lunged. The air cracked with raw force. Kai rolled, narrowly avoiding a crushing blow. Sparks flew as steel met claw. Every strike was precise, every dodge calculated. The dungeon seemed alive, responding to him. Traps triggered, corridors collapsed, monsters emerged from hidden chambers, yet he used them all to his advantage.

From the shadows, a whisper came. Not mechanical, not human. Something else.

"Kai… you cannot escape what is marked."

The words chilled him, but he did not flinch. This was bigger than a second chance—it was a war. A test of instinct, strength, and wit. The first Gate had only begun, and Kai Anderson was ready.

The night air shimmered faintly. The city below lay unaware. The system pulsed, golden and alive. Kai clenched his fists, eyes narrowing. The storm was coming. And he would rise above it all.
