Jackson leaned in, his voice dropping to a soft whisper. "The secret is—" He paused, waiting until Evie nodded for him to continue.
His voice trailed off. "Is..."
Evie stared at him as if he were a specimen under a microscope.
Furious, she snapped, "For heaven's sake, speak! Stop acting like a moron and get to the point." Her insult was harsh, but she knew he deserved every bit of it.
"Okay, fine." He let out a deep sigh. "The secret is..."
Evie's brow knitted together as she shot him a deadly stare.
Seeing this, Jackson blurted out, "The secret is all about... wait. Before I tell you, I'm going to need you to give me sixty thousand dollars. Trust me, once I've confirmed the payment, I'll tell you everything I know." A greedy grin masked his face.
What a greedy idiot!
Evie was stunned.
She couldn't believe she had wasted so much of her time trying to pry a secret out of him. The only reason she was even curious was because of the mystery surrounding her mother's death.
