Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: The Scan

Four minutes felt like four hours.

Kris stood in the parking lot, holding the Atomic Analyzer steady, watching the screen pulse with soft blue light as it worked. The device hummed faintly, barely audible, a sound so quiet he might have imagined it. Passersby glanced at the Ferrari, at the man holding what looked like a phone, and saw nothing unusual.

[Design capture: 23 percent complete. Estimated time remaining: 3 minutes, 12 seconds.]

Kris's arms didn't tire. That was new. Three months ago, holding anything steady for four minutes would have left his muscles trembling. Now his body simply obeyed, steady as a machine.

[Design capture: 47 percent complete. Scanning drivetrain architecture. Transmission specifications detected. Engine control unit programming captured.]

The screen flickered with schematics too complex to follow. Diagrams of engine blocks and suspension systems and electrical architectures flashed past, each one captured and stored in the device's memory. Kris didn't understand most of what he saw, not yet, but the Analyzer understood. That was what mattered.

[Design capture: 82 percent complete. Interior systems scanning. Infotainment architecture captured. Climate control logic captured. Seating ergonomics data captured.]

A group of teenagers walked past. One of them pointed at the Ferrari, said something Kris couldn't hear. The others laughed. They didn't look at him twice.

[Design capture complete.]

The screen flashed green. A notification appeared.

**FERRARI 488 GTB - FULL DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS**

Total components: 847,293

Unique materials: 1,247

Manufacturing processes: 3,892

Estimated production cost: $184,000

Estimated retail value: $280,000 - $350,000

**DESIGN PACKAGE SAVED**

Would you like to analyze individual components?

Kris lowered the device. Stared at the screen. Eight hundred forty-seven thousand components. Every single one of them now stored in a device that fit in his pocket.

"System. Can the Atomic Printer make any of this?"

[Affirmative. Atomic Printer can manufacture any component for which design specifications exist. Manufacturing time varies by complexity. Small components: minutes. Complete vehicle: approximately 72 hours continuous printing.]

Seventy-two hours to print an entire Ferrari. Three days to build what took an entire factory months to assemble.

Kris whistled softly. "That's insane."

[Atomic Printer technology is 347 years ahead of current Earth manufacturing capabilities. "Insane" is an accurate descriptor.]

He laughed. Actually laughed, standing in a parking lot next to a car he didn't own two days ago, holding a device that shouldn't exist.

[First Build mission: 1 of 3 materials scanned. Progress: 33 percent. Recommended next scans: biological material, synthetic material.]

Biological material. That meant something alive. Or once alive.

Kris looked around the parking lot. Empty except for his Ferrari and a few abandoned shopping carts. Not exactly a biological buffet.

He got back in the car. Started the engine. Pulled out of the lot with no particular destination in mind.

---

Twenty minutes later, he found himself at a grocery store.

Not the kind of place he usually shopped. This was one of those upscale markets with organic everything and prices that made his old self wince. But his old self had fifteen thousand dollars in the bank and a Ferrari in the parking lot, so he parked and walked inside like he belonged.

The produce section was overwhelming. Colors and smells and varieties of fruits and vegetables he couldn't name. He pulled out the Analyzer, held it casually like someone checking their phone, and pointed it at an apple.

[Scanning.]

Three seconds.

**SCAN COMPLETE**

**FUJI APPLE**

Type: Biological (plant)

**DESIGN CAPTURE AVAILABLE**

Would you like to capture complete biological design?

Kris hesitated. "System. Can the Printer make food?"

[Affirmative. Atomic Printer can manufacture organic compounds including food. Printed food is molecularly identical to natural food. Taste and nutritional value are identical.]

He could print an apple. An apple that was chemically perfect, indistinguishable from the real thing.

"Capture design."

[Capturing biological design. This will take approximately 45 seconds. Please hold device steady.]

He stood in the produce section, holding what looked like a phone, while the Analyzer mapped every cell of the apple. A store employee walked past, smiled politely, kept walking. No one cared.

[Design capture complete. Fuji apple specifications saved. 2 of 3 materials scanned. Progress: 66 percent.]

One more. Synthetic material.

Kris walked through the store, considering his options. Synthetic meant man-made. Plastic. Fabric. Electronics. He passed the clothing section, considered scanning a polyester shirt, kept walking. He passed the housewares section, considered a plastic container, kept walking.

Then he found the electronics aisle.

Cheap headphones. Phone cases. Charging cables. He picked up a pair of earbuds, the kind that cost fifteen dollars and broke in a month, and pointed the Analyzer.

[Scanning.]

**SCAN COMPLETE**

**WIRELESS EARBUDS - GENERIC**

**DESIGN CAPTURE AVAILABLE**

Would you like to capture complete design specifications?

"Capture."

[Capturing design. This will take approximately 2 minutes.]

Two minutes later, Kris owned the complete design specifications for a pair of cheap wireless earbuds. Nothing special. Nothing advanced. But the process was the same whether the device was simple or complex. Scan. Capture. Print.

[First Build mission complete. 3 of 3 materials scanned. 150 SP awarded. Total SP: 535.]

[Mission completed: System Store Exploration primary objective pending. Purchase any item from System Store to unlock Store Tier 1.]

Kris had already purchased the Analyzer. That should count. He checked the mission status.

[Mission: System Store Exploration - Primary Objective: PENDING. Store Tier 1 unlocks after first purchase. Current purchases detected: Atomic Analyzer. Processing...]

A pause.

[Error detected. System Store Exploration mission was received after Atomic Analyzer purchase. Primary objective requires new purchase. Please purchase an additional item to complete mission.]

Kris sighed. Of course. The mission had appeared after he already bought the Analyzer. He needed to buy something else.

He scrolled through the store list again.

He had 535 SP. He could afford several things. But what made the most sense?

"System. Recommend next purchase."

[Analysis: Host has acquired Atomic Analyzer. Next logical step: Atomic Printer. However, host currently lacks sufficient SP for Printer (600 SP). Recommend intermediate purchase to build SP while maintaining Printer as next major goal.]

[Options:]

[1. Storage Space Activation (100 SP). Provides 10 cubic meters of temporary storage. Enables future dimensional upgrades. Low cost. High long-term value.]

[3. Investment Mastery (150 SP). Provides professional-level financial analysis. Enables wealth acceleration. Medium cost. High financial return potential.]

[4. Basic Evolution Potion (80 SP). Provides physical enhancement. Stackable with future upgrades. Low cost. Immediate physical improvement.]

Kris considered each option. Combat instincts would keep him alive if Vincent or someone like him came calling again. Investment mastery would turn his money into more money. Evolution potion would make his body stronger. Storage space...

"Explain Storage Space."

[Storage Space is a dimensional pocket accessible only to host. Initial size: 10 cubic meters. Time frozen inside. Can store physical objects. Cannot store living beings. Future upgrades expand size and functionality.]

A pocket dimension. A place where he could store anything, safely, where no one could find it.

Kris thought about the Atomic Analyzer. The designs he had captured. The things he would build. Keeping them in his apartment was asking for trouble. Keeping them in a Ferrari was worse. But keeping them in a dimension only he could access?

"Buy Storage Space."

[Processing purchase. Storage Space Activation: 100 SP. Confirmation?]

"Yes."

[Purchase complete. Storage Space activated. 435 SP remaining.]

The world shifted.

Not visually. Not physically. But Kris felt something open in his mind, a new sense, a new awareness. He could feel a space that didn't exist in normal reality. Empty. Waiting. His.

[Storage Space initialized. Dimensions: 2.5m x 2m x 2m (10 cubic meters). Access method: mental command. Try it now.]

Kris looked at the earbuds in his hand. Thought: *Store.*

They vanished.

He blinked. Looked at his empty hand. Felt the space in his mind, and there they were, floating in nothingness, perfectly preserved.

*Retrieve.*

The earbuds reappeared in his palm.

Kris grinned. Actually grinned like a kid on Christmas morning.

"This is amazing."

[Storage Space is entry-level dimensional technology. Future upgrades include time dilation, environmental control, expanded dimensions, and eventually pocket world creation.]

Pocket world. His own private universe. Someday.

He walked out of the store, past the employees who had no idea they had just witnessed the birth of something impossible, and got back in his car.

[Mission update: System Store Exploration primary objective complete. 100 SP awarded. Store Tier 1 unlocked. Total SP: 535.]

[Secondary objective: Purchase three items from System Store. Progress: 2 of 3. Additional 300 SP and Random Technology Blueprint available upon completion.]

Two down. One more purchase to go. And then a random technology blueprint, whatever that meant.

Kiss scrolled through the newly unlocked Tier 1 items.

More choices. More possibilities. But one thing caught his eye.

Basic Robot Chassis Blueprint: 250 SP.

A robot. He could build a robot. Not an AI, not yet, but a body. A machine that could move and act and...

*Later,* he told himself. *One step at a time.*

He needed one more purchase to complete the mission. Something cheap. Something useful.

Language Pack. 50 SP. Any Earth language.

"System. Buy Mandarin Chinese language pack."

[Processing purchase. Language Pack: Mandarin Chinese. 50 SP. Confirmation?]

"Yes."

[Purchase complete. Installing language pack. Please remain still.]

Warmth spread through his brain. Not painful this time, just... warm. Words and grammar and pronunciation flowing into him like water into dry soil. Characters appearing in his mind, thousands of them, each one making perfect sense.

[Installation complete. Host now possesses native-level fluency in Mandarin Chinese. 485 SP remaining.]

[Mission complete: System Store Exploration. Secondary objective achieved. 300 SP awarded. Random Technology Blueprint generated. Total SP: 785.]

[Random Technology Blueprint added to inventory. Access now?]

Kris's heart pounded. Random blueprint. Could be anything. Could be worthless. Could be revolutionary.

"Access."

A blueprint appeared in his mind's eye. Complex schematics. Materials lists. Manufacturing instructions. He didn't understand all of it, not yet, but he understood enough.

**HELIOS AR/VR NEURAL GLASSES - COMPLETE BLUEPRINT**

Kris stared at nothing, seeing everything.

Glasses that looked normal but could do the impossible. VR more immersive than anything on Earth. AR that recognized objects and displayed information. Neural interface controlled by thought. And a place for an AI to live.

Astra.

The name came from nowhere. Or from somewhere deep in his mind. Astra. The AI he would build. The intelligence that would live in these glasses and help him change the world.

[Blueprint detected: Helios AR/VR Neural Glasses. Would host like to analyze manufacturing requirements?]

Kris blinked. Shook himself. Came back to the present.

"Yes. Show me what I need."

**MANUFACTURING REQUIREMENTS**

Option 1: Atomic Printer

- Printer can manufacture 87% of components directly

- Remaining 13% require assembly

- Estimated time to first unit: 12 hours

- Estimated time per additional unit: 45 minutes

Option 2: Traditional Manufacturing

- Requires supply chain for 847 components

- Requires clean room assembly facility

- Requires certification and testing

- Estimated time to first unit: 6 months

- Estimated cost for tooling: $2-3 million

There was no choice. Not really. Atomic Printer was the only path forward.

And Atomic Printer cost 600 SP.

Kris checked his balance: 785 SP. Enough. Barely.

"System. Buy Atomic Printer."

[Processing purchase. Atomic Printer: 600 SP. 10 percent discount applied: 540 SP. Confirmation?]

"Wait. The discount still works?"

[Daily check in discount applies to any store purchase within 72 hours of receipt. 18 hours remaining.]

Eight hundred forty SP saved. Forty-five SP more than he needed.

"Yes. Buy it."

[Purchase complete. Atomic Printer will be delivered to host's current location within 60 minutes. 245 SP remaining.]

Kris leaned back in the Ferrari's seat. Closed his eyes. Let himself feel it.

Analyzer. Storage Space. Language. Printer. Glasses blueprint. In two days, he had gone from nothing to this. From a beaten man in a warehouse to someone who could build the future.

[New mission available: First Print. Primary objective: Use Atomic Printer to manufacture at least one complete object. Reward: 200 SP.]

"Accept."

He opened his eyes. Started the car. Drove toward his apartment, toward the printer that would arrive in an hour, toward a future that was finally, finally beginning.

The sun was setting. Golden light painted the buildings as he drove. The city looked different now. Less like a trap. More like a place where things were possible.

[Host emotional state: elevated. Dopamine levels: 187 percent above baseline. Serotonin: 142 percent above baseline. Recommend grounding exercise to maintain equilibrium.]

Kris laughed. "I'm fine. I'm better than fine."

[Acknowledged. Continue monitoring.]

He pulled into the parking lot near his apartment. Parked the Ferrari where he could see it from his window. Walked up the creaking stairs, past the broken light, past Mrs. Chen's apartment where she was yelling at someone again.

His apartment door. His hand on the knob.

He stopped.

Something was wrong.

The door was slightly open. Just a crack. Just enough.

[Intruder detected. Multiple heat signatures inside apartment. Three individuals. Threat assessment: high.]

Kris's blood went cold.

[Recommendation: retreat immediately. Contact authorities. Do not engage.]

But it was too late.

The door swung open.

And Vincent Ross stood there, smiling, with two men behind him and violence in his eyes.
