Chapter 40 - Chapter 10: The Choice of the Reader

The ridge cracked louder.

The molten ocean below surged upward like a breathing creature.

Above them, the fractured sky pulsed with the Observer's golden thread, vibrating with increasing intensity.

The System counted down.

Time Remaining: 32 seconds

Jack looked between the two Daves again.

"…I really hate this."

Dave A stood still, eyes focused on the lattice of golden threads weaving through the air.

Dave B had moved closer to the edge of the ridge, staring into the unstable horizon where reality flickered like a broken film reel.

Ava's voice came through the comms.

"Dave… whichever version survives will define the narrative direction from this point forward."

David added quietly:

"The Observer isn't looking for the correct answer."

"…it's looking for a committed one."

Simon whispered in both Daves' minds.

"…a story cannot follow two protagonists."

The golden thread pulsed harder.

Reality began splitting more aggressively.

Two versions of the ridge appeared.

One stable.

One collapsing.

Jack pointed at the unstable one.

"Let's not pick that."

Dave A spoke calmly.

"If we choose stability, the Observer will continue escalating trials."

Dave B nodded.

"But if we push the narrative forward…"

"…we might break the pattern."

Jack rubbed his temples.

"Why does every cosmic problem you face involve breaking reality?"

Dave B smiled faintly.

"Because the story only evolves when someone risks changing it."

The countdown continued.

Time Remaining: 18 seconds

The ridge trembled violently now.

Fragments of past events appeared in the air like broken memories.

The Sentinel's shattered armor.

The collapsing Archive Sphere.

The moment Dave first activated the Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint.

All of it flickered around them.

The Observer was watching closely.

Simon whispered again.

"…the decision is not between right and wrong. It is between control and transformation."

Dave A closed his eyes briefly.

Then opened them.

"…I understand."

Dave B tilted his head.

"Do you?"

Dave A stepped forward.

Instead of confronting Dave B—

He walked toward the unstable ridge.

Jack blinked.

"…wait. What are you doing?"

Dave A spoke quietly.

"The story needs someone who moves forward."

Dave B's eyes widened slightly.

"…you're choosing me."

Dave A nodded.

"If two Readers exist, the Observer will never stop testing."

He looked at Jack.

"Which means one of us has to leave the narrative."

Jack's expression darkened.

"…I don't like where this is going."

The System chimed urgently.

Time Remaining: 7 seconds

Dave A turned back toward Dave B.

"Push the story forward," he said calmly.

"Don't let the Observer trap us in endless trials."

Dave B stared at him.

For the first time, uncertainty flickered in his eyes.

"…you're sure about this?"

Dave A smiled faintly.

"Someone has to make the decision."

Jack stepped forward.

"Hold on—maybe we can—"

Dave A raised a hand.

"No."

The ridge cracked violently.

The unstable reality beneath his feet began collapsing into molten light.

Simon whispered softly.

"…the Reader sacrifices the branch to save the story."

Dave A looked at the horizon one last time.

Then he stepped forward into the collapsing narrative.

The moment he crossed the unstable ridge—

The world flashed white.

The golden threads snapped violently together.

Reality folded.

Then stabilized.

Jack staggered as the ridge solidified beneath his feet again.

The molten ocean calmed.

The fractured sky sealed itself.

Only one Dave remained.

Dave B.

He stood silently at the center of the ridge.

The System chimed.

Narrative Conflict Resolved

Dominant Reader Selected

Reader Identity: Dave

Alternate Narrative Branch: Discarded

Trial Progress: 100%

Jack looked around slowly.

"…well."

He exhaled.

"That was traumatic."

Ava's voice came through the comm, softer now.

"…Dave?"

Dave turned toward the submarine.

His expression had changed.

Not dramatically.

But something in his gaze felt… sharper.

More decisive.

Simon whispered in his mind.

"…the Reader has chosen transformation over stability."

Jack walked up beside him.

"…so," he said carefully, "are you still the same Dave?"

Dave looked up toward the golden thread in the sky.

The External Observer pulsed once more.

But this time—

It did not distort reality.

It simply observed.

Dave spoke quietly.

"…no."

Jack sighed.

"I figured."

The Observer's golden thread dimmed slightly.

For the first time since the trials began—

It seemed satisfied.

But far beyond the ridge…

Beyond the Iron Ocean…

Beyond the fractured narrative space…

Something deeper stirred in the void.

A presence older than the Observer.

And it had just noticed the Reader.

To be continued…
