Chapter 3 - The System’s Brilliant Plan to Settle the Host

Since its creation many eras ago, the Legendary Assassin System had always been diligent and responsible. It had never once forgotten its duty as a system.

At the end of the previous era, during the Dimensional System Administration Bureau's Title Evaluation Conference, the Legendary Assassin System failed to win the title of Outstanding System. However, thanks to its reliable work ethic, it still received verbal praise from higher management.

If nothing unexpected happened, once this era ended, it would surely obtain the Outstanding System title—leading to promotion, better resources, and ultimately reaching the peak of system success.

After all, the system market these days was chaotic.

In the past there had been things like the Strongest Harem Conquest System, and recently countless Sign-In Systems had appeared.

In the eyes of the Legendary Assassin System, those flashy systems were nothing but crooked shortcuts. Yet ironically, they were becoming increasingly popular with hosts.

Meanwhile, an old-fashioned system like itself—simple, straightforward, and somewhat dull—was struggling to survive in the current environment.

Still, during the past few eras, it had successfully cultivated several hosts and completed its missions with honor. In terms of experience, it could already be considered a veteran system.

For the sake of the Outstanding System evaluation this era, it had worked tirelessly as always.

After successfully training its previous host into a top-tier assassin, it immediately began searching for a new host.

This time, to improve the final host evaluation score, it deliberately chose a "shut-in anime fan" as the new host.

Compared to ancient host templates like retired soldier kings or heirs of ancient martial arts, recent reports from the System Administration Bureau indicated that otaku-type hosts currently provided higher evaluation bonuses.

Although training such a host might take more effort in the early stages, the Legendary Assassin System believed the challenge was worthwhile for the sake of earning the Outstanding System title.

To prepare for this, it even performed a self-update.

After browsing highly rated posts on the System Forum, it downloaded a "Two-Dimensional Patch Pack" and spent time studying what the term two-dimensional culture actually meant.

Even now, it still didn't fully understand what the so-called "true two-dimensional world" really was. But it had at least learned the basic concepts included in the patch pack.

For the host's starting reward, it selected the Assassin Bloodline from Assassin's Creed.

The initial world was also chosen carefully: the Assassin's Creed II setting, which the host was most familiar with.

Additionally, it incorporated several famous anime-style assassin abilities into the system's reward pool.

Although the system itself had no particular interest in abilities like Nine-Tails Chakra Mode or the Mystic Eyes of Death Perception, it believed that placing the host in such an environment would stimulate the host's motivation and allow him to grow faster.

But what it never expected…

Was that its own update would break the system.

Perhaps too many new components had been installed, causing compatibility issues. Or perhaps the patch pack downloaded from the System Forum was poorly made.

In any case, the Dimensional Travel Subsystem suffered a serious malfunction.

During the transmigration process, it consumed nearly all of the system's stored energy.

In the end, it was forced to land in this strange world.

"This is bad… If the transmigration error gets reported, my Outstanding System title will be completely ruined!"

The moment it realized the host had arrived in the wrong world, the veteran system immediately shut itself down in despair.

It knew the consequences clearly.

Not only was the Outstanding System title for this era gone—

It would probably take ten entire eras before it could even hope to earn another promotion.

However, as a veteran system that had existed for several eras and trained multiple hosts, the Legendary Assassin System did not give up completely.

Using the last of its remaining energy, it scanned and analyzed the current world.

And soon, it discovered a new opportunity.

According to its analysis, detectives in this world were closely connected to the core structure of the world itself.

Some top-tier detectives even carried traces of the world's origin power, almost as if they were the protagonists of this world.

If the host could become a Legendary Detective, the system would have a chance to absorb a fragment of the world's origin energy to replenish itself.

Moreover, raising a host under such unusual circumstances could be considered a creative workaround.

If successful, it might even become a valuable achievement listed in the system's performance record.

With that idea in mind, the system sent a sincere invitation to its host:

"Please work together with this system to become the greatest assas—… detective in this world."

Although that slip of the tongue was a small mistake, surely the host could feel the system's sincere intentions.

Meanwhile, Jiang Hang finally snapped out of his thoughts after hearing the system's explanation.

"So what exactly do you expect me to do now?" Jiang Hang asked. "Compete with Conan for cases and solve every single one before he does?"

"That would naturally be the ideal scenario," the system replied. "However, this system focuses on cultivating the host's own abilities. It will not directly assist with solving cases."

"In future investigations, the host must personally discover clues and determine the killer's motives."

Hearing that response, Jiang Hang curled his lips slightly.

So it was still a stubborn old-fashioned system.

To be honest, although Detective Conan had been one of the anime he watched growing up, he had only truly seen the first few dozen episodes back when they aired on television.

Aside from that, he had watched a few of the movies unrelated to the main storyline.

But the later episodes?

He barely knew anything about them.

He didn't even know how far the main story had progressed.

A few years ago he had heard that the mysterious boss of the organization had finally been revealed. At the time, Jiang Hang thought the series was finally about to end.

Yet after that, everything seemed to go silent again.

Even with his incredibly useful Eagle Vision, Jiang Hang felt confident that he could compete with Conan for some early cases.

But solving every single case encountered by Conan—the walking embodiment of death itself?

That sounded completely impossible.

Thinking about it made Jiang Hang feel exhausted already.

"Forget it," he said with a sigh. "With Conan's luck, he probably runs into a murder case every time he blinks. I'll just start as a normal detective instead."

The Legendary Assassin System fell silent.

It suddenly remembered something important.

Although otaku-type hosts could provide higher evaluation scores, most of them shared a common weakness.

They were lazy.

Originally, the system had planned to bring the host to Renaissance-era Florence and expose him to the harsh realities of that era. That environment would have quickly eliminated the host's laziness.

But now, because of the unexpected world transfer, the host had developed distrust toward the system.

Combined with the comfort and convenience of modern life, Jiang Hang's lazy personality had resurfaced.

Under normal circumstances, the system would submit a request to the System Administration Bureau to obtain permission for minor punishment measures.

Simple penalties were often very effective in stimulating a host's motivation.

However, if it submitted such a request, the transmigration error would inevitably be recorded.

Its original plan to quietly cover up the mistake would collapse immediately.

Using punishment after making such a serious system error was something only unlicensed, low-quality systems would do.

If that scandal became public, it would never earn the Outstanding System title again.

Fortunately, the Legendary Assassin System was still an experienced system.

If punishment couldn't be used…

Then motivation could be increased through rewards.

High-value assassin abilities obviously couldn't be handed out casually. The host needed to earn those step by step.

But there was one thing the system possessed in abundance—something completely useless to itself but incredibly attractive to humans.

Money.

Previously, the system hadn't even implemented such a feature.

After all, what would an assassin need money for? If they lacked funds, they could simply take it from wealthy targets.

However, the currency exchange function had been included in the two-dimensional patch pack.

And now it could finally be put to good use.

I truly am a genius system, it thought proudly.

With that decision made, the Legendary Assassin System immediately issued a new mission to Jiang Hang.
