Chapter 1 - “Rain Between Us”

The city was drowning in rain.

Aarav stood under a broken streetlight, holding his camera and muttering to himself.

"Perfect weather for photos," he said.

The rain immediately poured harder.

"…or perfect weather to die of pneumonia."

He sighed and lifted his camera.

Click.

A couple running through the rain.

Click.

A dog shaking water on a businessman.

Click.

A girl screaming at an umbrella that refused to open.

Aarav lowered the camera.

The girl was struggling with the umbrella like it had personally offended her.

"Open!" she yelled.

The umbrella stayed closed.

"Wow," Aarav said from behind her.

"I've seen bad relationships, but this one looks toxic."

The girl turned around instantly.

"What?"

She had wet hair stuck to her face and the angriest expression he had ever seen.

Aarav smiled.

"Your umbrella broke up with you."

She stared at him.

Then suddenly started laughing.

"Great. First the umbrella, now a random comedian."

"Photographer," he corrected proudly.

"Same thing," she replied.

Kabir later asked Aarav:

"So you met the love of your life in the rain?"

"No."

"Then why are you smiling like an idiot?"

"She threatened to hit me with a broken umbrella."

Kabir nodded seriously.

"Ah yes. True romance."

Two weeks later Maya dragged Aarav to explore an abandoned theater she wanted to redesign.

Inside it was dark.

Dust everywhere.

Suddenly something moved.

Aarav whispered.

"…please tell me that's not a ghost."

Maya whispered back.

"…please tell me that's not a rat."

Something jumped.

They both screamed and ran out of the building.

Outside, gasping for air, Maya laughed so hard she almost fell.

"You ran first!"

Aarav protested.

"That thing had murder eyes!"

One night on a rooftop.

City lights everywhere.

Maya asked quietly:

"Why do you take photos of strangers?"

Aarav looked at the skyline.

"Because strangers don't leave."

Maya looked at him softly.

"I might."

He smiled.

"Then I'll take your photo before you go."

Months later.

At the train station.

Maya held her suitcase.

"I got the scholarship," she whispered.

Aarav smiled.

"That's amazing."

"But it's in another country."

Silence.

She looked at him with tears.

"Why aren't you stopping me?"

Aarav's voice broke.

"Because I love you too much to ruin your dream."

A tear rolled down Maya's cheek.

"Idiot."

He laughed softly.

"Yeah."

She hugged him tightly.

And for the first time…

Aarav cried.

Love isn't about holding someone back.

It's about letting them fly… even if it hurts.
