That evening Emily stayed late again finishing work.
By the time she finished, the office was almost empty.
Alexander stepped out of his office.
"You're still here."
Emily stretched tiredly.
"Your reports never end."
Alexander checked the time.
"It's almost midnight."
Emily sighed.
"I should go home."
Outside the building, rain had started falling again.
Emily groaned.
"Not again."
Alexander unlocked his car.
"I'll drive you."
Emily looked surprised.
"You don't have to."
Alexander opened the passenger door.
"Get in."
The ride through the city was quiet.
Rain tapped against the windshield.
Streetlights reflected across the wet roads.
After a few minutes Emily spoke.
"Your ex seemed scary."
Alexander kept his eyes on the road.
"She's ambitious."
Emily laughed.
"That's a polite way to say dangerous."
Alexander didn't disagree.
Emily looked out the window.
"You live in a completely different world than me."
Alexander glanced at her.
"Different doesn't mean incompatible."
Emily looked surprised by the comment.
For a moment neither of them spoke.
But something in the atmosphere had changed.
