Cherreads

Chapter 3 - chapter 3

The studio had quieted down. Lights dimmed, cameras were packed away, and the crew shuffled chairs and cables with practiced efficiency. The coffee shop scene had wrapped, and Lily Hayes wiped her hands on her jeans, trying to shake off the lingering tension of the rehearsal.

Her auburn hair had loosened from the messy bun, and the bright yellow sundress now looked rumpled—evidence of the spilled coffee fiasco. She stole a glance at Ethan, who was scribbling furiously in his notebook near the monitors.

He glanced up, catching her eye. That spark—the same blue-eyed intensity that had unnerved her all morning—was there again. Charming, infuriating, impossible to ignore. Lily looked away, refusing to let him see that her chest had fluttered during rehearsal.

Rachel clapped her hands together. "Excellent work today, everyone. Seriously, Ethan, you've managed to get her to loosen up on camera. That awkwardness—authentic. Beautiful."

Ethan smirked, casually leaning against the monitor. "She wasn't half bad herself."

Lily raised an eyebrow. "Thanks. Don't let it go to your head."

"Don't worry," he replied smoothly. "I'm more concerned about you. That's my job."

Lily gave a small, amused laugh, though she tried to hide it. Charming, yes. But she wasn't about to give him the satisfaction of thinking he'd impressed her.

"Anyway," she said, turning toward her bag, "I've got a lot to do. Lines to memorize. Makeup to wash off. World to conquer."

Ethan straightened and stepped closer. "How about we start with coffee instead?" His grin widened. "Tomorrow. 2 PM. My treat."

Lily froze mid-step. She wasn't sure if it was the invitation or the grin that made her stomach tighten.

"Coffee?" she asked, eyebrow arched. "You mean… a work thing?"

Ethan shook his head. "Not a work thing. Just… coffee. For me. With you."

She tilted her head, studying him. That easy confidence of his—annoying, charming, impossible—made her heart skip without warning.

"And why exactly should I say yes?" she asked, feigning indifference. "You're just some arrogant writer who decided to… mess with my lines."

Ethan laughed lightly, the kind of laugh that made her cheeks warm. "Arrogant? Strong word. I prefer… confident."

"Right," she muttered, shaking her head. "Confident. Charming. Full of unsolicited advice. And you think coffee will fix that?"

"Not fix," he said. "Just… continue the conversation."

Lily pursed her lips, playing hard to get. "Hmm. I'll have to think about it."

Ethan leaned in slightly, lowering his voice. "Take your time. But if you say no, I'll be disappointed."

She gave a soft, barely-there smile. "We wouldn't want that, now would we?"

He grinned knowingly. "Good. Tomorrow. 2 PM. I'll text you the place."

She nodded, gathering her things, hiding her racing heart behind a shrug. "Fine," she said finally. "But only because you're insufferable enough to make me curious."

The next day, Lily arrived at Caffein Dreams, a quirky coffee shop tucked just off Sunset Boulevard. The warm light spilling through the windows and the faint smell of roasted beans greeted her like a little promise of calm after the chaos of the studio.

She wore a soft white blouse and distressed jeans, her auburn curls tumbling freely around her shoulders. She scanned the shop, spotting Ethan in a corner booth, laptop closed, tapping his fingers on the table.

"Hey," he said as he noticed her. That grin—the one that had lingered in her thoughts all morning—spread across his face. "You showed."

Sliding into the chair opposite him, Lily crossed her arms casually. "Didn't want to break the streak."

Ethan chuckled. "Good choice. Coffee's on me."

The barista—a pierced girl with a warm smile—came over. "Usual, Ethan?"

"Yeah," he nodded. "And… Lily?"

"Black. Straight."

Ethan raised an eyebrow. "No frills?"

"I like it straight."

He smirked, clearly amused. "Same."

The barista left, and the shop's soft indie music filled the silence between them.

"So," Ethan said, leaning back, "how was your morning?"

Lily leaned in, playing along. "Productive. Caught up on sleep. Watched old rom-coms."

"Research?" he asked, grinning.

"Maybe." She smirked. "You?"

"Wrote some new scenes. Sunset Romance is getting spicy."

"Spicy?" Lily's curiosity was piqued despite herself.

"Lynette gets a surprise visitor," he said, eyes glinting. "Messy."

Her eyes lit up. "Tell me more."

Ethan's grin widened. "You'll have to read it."

Their coffees arrived. Lily wrapped her hands around the cup, inhaling the warm aroma.

"You like coffee that much?" Ethan asked, his tone teasing.

"I like things that hit the spot," she said, eyes closing briefly as she sipped.

He watched, amused. "I think I get that."

She opened her eyes, catching his gaze. "What?"

"Nothing," he said casually. "So… wanna talk about the script?"

Lily raised an eyebrow. "You didn't ask me here just to talk script."

His grin returned, pure mischief. "Maybe not just for that."

They sipped their coffee, letting the music, the smell of roasted beans, and the soft hum of conversation create a quiet bubble around them. They talked about favorite books, music, ridiculous auditions, and odd habits. Ethan listened, genuinely interested, and Lily found herself laughing more than she had in days.

Hours passed unnoticed. The shop emptied, the barista flipping the sign to closed.

Ethan glanced at his watch. "Whoa. 4 PM."

Lily blinked. "Time flew."

"Want to walk?" he asked.

She nodded, and they stepped into the warm LA sunlight. They strolled down Melrose Avenue, talking about everything—music, food, weird dreams. Ethan gestured wildly as he spoke, and she laughed, catching herself enjoying his ridiculous energy.

At a street corner, Ethan stopped. "You know… this was fun."

Lily smiled, looking up at him. "Yeah."

"Want to do it again?"

She raised an eyebrow, playful. "Depends on what it is."

"Dinner. Tomorrow. My treat," he said smoothly.

She hesitated, then gave a small, tentative smile. "Where?"

"Secret spot. I'll pick you up. 7 PM."

Her heart fluttered. "Okay."

Ethan's eyes locked on hers. "I'll text you the address."

They continued walking. Their arms brushed, neither pulling away. Lily tried to act nonchalant, but the warmth creeping up her arm betrayed her.

At her car, she turned to him. "Thanks for today."

He raised an eyebrow, teasing. "Wow. Thanks. That was hard for you, huh?"

Lily rolled her eyes, laughing. "I know when to be nice."

Ethan chuckled. "I'll remember that."

"I'm counting on it," she said.

He smiled and stepped back. "Till tomorrow."

Lily got into her car, heart still racing, driving off with a smile she couldn't quite hide.
