Chapter 4 - The Master’s Eye and the Price of Pride

The Master's Eye and the Price of Pride

Bhima returns to Hastinapur, not just alive, but infused with the strength of ten thousand elephants. The Kauravas are paralyzed with fear, but the palace soon fills with a new energy: the arrival of Dronacharya, the master of arms. Drona is a man fueled by a singular, icy grudge against King Drupada of Panchala. He agrees to tutor the Kuru princes, but his eyes are always on one prize-creating a warrior capable of settling his score.

Under Drona's tutelage, the cousins' rivalry shifts from schoolyard brawls to lethal skill. While the others rest, Arjuna practices in the dark, training his ears to "see." The famous test of the wooden bird follows: while every other prince sees the tree, the leaves, and the bird, Arjuna sees only the bird's eye. Dronacharya realizes he has found his ultimate weapon. However, this favoritism births a dark shadow-Ekalavya, a forest-dweller who learns by watching Drona from afar. When Drona discovers this, he demands Ekalavya's right thumb as Guru Dakshina (teacher's fee) to ensure Arjuna remains the undisputed best.

The education concludes with a final exam: the capture of King Drupada. The Kauravas fail miserably, but the Pandavas, led by Arjuna, bring the King in chains to Drona's feet. Drona takes half of Drupada's kingdom, leaving the King humiliated and burning for a vengeance that will eventually birthed from a sacrificial fire. As the Pandavas' popularity grows, Dhritarashtra's heart hardens. He realizes that as long as the Pandavas live, his son Duryodhana will never wear the crown.

Working with the conniving Shakuni, the King hatches a plan to "honor" the Pandavas with a trip to the beautiful city of Varanavata-unaware that the very walls of their new home are built to melt like wax.
