Chapter 10 - Decisions Of A Head Of The House - chapter 10

The morning sun poured through the tall windows of the study, illuminating the stacks of letters and ledgers that had accumulated overnight. Hana sat behind Seraphina's massive desk, her small hands hovering over the papers.

Today, Seraphina said calmly inside Hana's mind, you will make your first official decision as head of the house.

Hana blinked. Me? But… I'm eleven!

Exactly.

Hana swallowed nervously. She had seen Seraphina handle these documents with effortless elegance. Now, the responsibility was on her.

The first letter on the top of the pile was from a neighboring noble estate, requesting permission to use some of the Seraphina estate's forest for timber. The letter was formal, polite, but the wording carried implications about trade rights and resource control. Hana squinted at the lines.

"…Uh… what does 'exclusive rights' mean?" she muttered.

It means if you grant it carelessly, they could monopolize the forest and our income could drop.

Hana gulped. "…Oh no."

Think carefully. Weigh the options.

Hana stared at the words, then tried to imagine the forest. She could see the trees, the workers, the estate grounds. She felt a strange… emotional connection.

"…Okay," she whispered, "…let's be nice."

Hana! Seraphina hissed internally. "Nice" is not a strategy!

Hana paused. "…But I don't want anyone to be sad!"

You are eleven, yes—but I am not. Follow my guidance.

Hana nodded slowly. Fine, guide me.

Under Seraphina's direction, Hana drafted a reply: offering permission for timber, but in carefully calculated amounts, with strict rules for how much could be taken each month. Her small hands trembled as she signed Seraphina's elegant name.

Good. Seraphina's voice was calm, approving.

Hana blinked. That… wasn't so scary.

Yet. The next decision may be more complicated.

Hana picked up another letter. This one concerned an argument between two estate merchants over a miscounted shipment of silk. Both parties demanded compensation, and each referenced previous contracts. Hana frowned at the dense, formal language.

"…I… I don't even know what this means," she admitted aloud.

Think logically. What would Seraphina do?

Hana tapped her chin. "…Okay. One is wrong, and one is right… but which?"

Read carefully. Look for evidence.

Hana reread the letters slowly. She compared dates, quantities, and even noticed small discrepancies in handwriting that indicated who actually signed each document. Hana frowned. "…I think… this one cheated?"

Good. Now act.

Hana drafted a careful note. The letter allowed the honest merchant compensation and instructed the cheating party to make amends. She held the pen awkwardly as she signed.

Efficient. Seraphina's voice sounded almost… impressed. Hana's chest swelled slightly.

Next came a small tray of petitions from the estate staff. Some requested time off. Others requested small raises or changes in their duties. Hana frowned at the neat handwriting and polite phrases.

"…I don't want anyone to be upset," Hana muttered.

You are still thinking as a child. Decisions must balance fairness with strategy.

Hana bit her lip. She read each petition slowly, trying to imagine how each choice would affect the household. For the first time, she felt the weight of responsibility pressing down—not like fear, but like… careful attention.

She granted a short leave to the gardener, approved a slight increase for the kitchen staff, and reassigned a few minor duties. All under Seraphina's subtle guidance.

By mid-morning, Hana leaned back in the chair, exhausted but oddly proud.

"…I did it," she whispered.

Yes. Seraphina's voice was quiet, almost approving. You made real decisions. Without chaos.

Hana blinked. "…Really?"

Really.

Hana looked down at the neatly organized papers on the desk. Each letter replied to, each petition handled. For a moment, she felt a sense of… accomplishment.

Then she noticed something.

One of the letters she had approved—the one allowing timber from the forest—had a small note from the merchant:

"Thank you, My Lady. I hope to expand trade soon! Your kindness is unmatched."

Hana's small heart skipped. "…Did I… just make someone happy?"

Indeed. Seraphina's voice sounded faintly amused. Your naivety… has potential.

Hana beamed. "…I like this job."

Careful. Seraphina warned. This job requires balance. One wrong choice, and chaos ensues.

Hana laughed softly. "…Then I'll just be careful."

A soft knock sounded at the study door. Kale appeared again, calm as always.

"My Lady," he said, eyes sweeping the desk. "The northern delegates have arrived for their visit."

Hana straightened her shoulders, trying to mimic the composure she had learned in the past hour.

"…Okay," she whispered to herself. "Let's do this… as the head of the house."

Seraphina's inner voice was quiet, almost approving.

Very well, Hana. Let us see what you can do when the world watches.

For the first time, Hana felt that she might actually survive this day in Seraphina's body—and maybe, just maybe, grow into the role without completely tripping over everything.
