Chapter 9 - Arrival Of Old Crown

The horns had not fully faded when the gates finally opened.

A line of guards stood rigid on both sides of the palace courtyard, armor polished to a sharp shine that reflected the pale morning light.

Seraphina stood with the others at the front of the gathering. Her hands were folded neatly, posture composed, face calm in the way she had learned to perfect over years of court life.

But her fingers pressed lightly into her palm, just enough to remind her she was still feeling something beneath the stillness.

Alaric stood slightly ahead of her. Not enough to separate them completely, but enough to show where attention would fall first.

Darius leaned slightly to Cassian.

"They always make an entrance like the world is theirs," he muttered.

Cassian didn't look at him. "Because for a long time, it was."

The sound of wheels rolled closer.

A royal carriage, dark wood trimmed in gold, moved through the gates slowly. The horses were strong, controlled, deliberate.

The carriage stopped.

Silence settled instantly.

The door opened.

First came the King Father.

He stepped down without hurry. His presence didn't demand attention—it absorbed it. His gaze moved across the gathered court once, as if counting what belonged to him and what was still uncertain.

Then came the Queen Dowager.

She descended with perfect ease, her posture straight, her expression unreadable in a way that felt intentional rather than neutral.

Her eyes swept over the court before landing on Seraphina.

Not long.

Just enough.

Alaric bowed his head slightly.

"Father. Mother. Welcome home."

The King Father nodded once. "Alaric."

The Queen Dowager's gaze shifted again, slower this time.

"So this is Valdoria now," she said softly. "It looks… softer than I remember."

No one answered.

Seraphina stepped forward just slightly.

"Your chambers are prepared," she said calmly. "We have made arrangements for your comfort."

The Queen Dowager looked at her.

Slowly.

"You've grown thinner."

"Stress… or disappointment?"

The words were spoken as if they were simple observation.

Seraphina did not react immediately. When she spoke, her voice remained steady.

"Travel can be exhausting. Please allow us to ease your arrival."

A smile touched the Queen Dowager's lips. Not warm. Not unkind either.

"I am sure you will try."

Alaric glanced briefly at Seraphina, then away again.

A movement so small no one else would question it.

But Seraphina noticed.

Always.

A few steps away, Alina stood with Selene in her arms while holding Emric her first son.

She stepped forward smoothly.

"Your Majesties," she said, bowing her head slightly.

The Queen Dowager's eyes shifted immediately to the child, then to her son.

She extended her hands.

"Come here Emric." Completely ignoring the new born, Selene.

Emric ran to his grandmother.

The Queen Dowager took him into her arms with practiced ease, examining him with attention.

"Strong," she said after a moment. "Good structure."

"The kingdom always rests easier with sons like this."

The silence that followed was immediate and heavy.

Alina's smile remained.

Seraphina's expression did not change.

Alaric did not speak.

The King Father turned.

"We will go inside."

The group moved through the courtyard into the palace hall.

Inside, everything had been arranged carefully. Tables adjusted, seating corrected, flowers replaced again that morning despite already being fresh.

The Queen Dowager's eyes moved across the room.

"This arrangement," she said. "Still the same pattern."

A servant nearby bowed quickly. "It was approved by the queen—"

The Queen Dowager cut in.

"Of course it was."

The servant stopped speaking immediately.

Seraphina felt the words settle into the room without needing force.

The Queen Dowager sat with ease, as if she had always belonged in the center of every decision made here.

Her gaze returned to Seraphina once more.

"How long has it been now?" she asked.

Silence.

"Five years? Or six?"

Seraphina's hands remained folded.

"Time moves differently within duty," she replied.

The Queen Dowager tilted her head.

"Interesting answer."

"Peace is easier to maintain when it produces heirs."

No one spoke.

Even Alaric's jaw tightened, though he said nothing.

The King Father leaned back.

"We will hold council this evening," he said.

Alaric looked up.

"Tonight?"

"Yes," the King Father replied. "Before sentiment clouds judgment."

The word landed deliberately.

Alaric hesitated.

"Very well."

Seraphina looked at him at that moment.

He did not meet her eyes.

The Queen Dowager rose first.

"We will see the rest of the palace."

Servants immediately moved to guide them.

As the court began to break apart into smaller movements and conversations, Seraphina remained where she stood for a moment longer than necessary.

She was not addressed.

Not dismissed.

Not included.

Just… passed over.

Alaric was already walking with his father, their conversation low and controlled.

Darius watched them go.

Cassian remained silent.

Alina adjusted Selene slightly in her arms, expression unreadable.

The hall slowly emptied of attention, even if not of people.

Seraphina finally turned, preparing to leave.

The Queen Dowager's voice drifted once more from across the hall.

"Valdoria has changed," she said calmly. "We will see what remains unchanged tonight."

No one responded.

Seraphina continued walking.

The sound of footsteps faded behind her.

She understood something clearly without needing it spoken.

This was no visit.

This was inspection.

And inspection always ended with decisions.
