Chapter 6 - Finding My Own Path

For as long as he could remember, Rohan's future had already been decided.

His parents often said the same thing at family gatherings.

"One day, Rohan will become a doctor, just like his father."

Relatives would smile proudly, and Rohan would nod politely.

But inside, he wasn't sure.

Rohan respected his father. He knew becoming a doctor was a great achievement. Yet whenever people talked about hospitals, medicine, and long years of study, he felt a quiet discomfort he couldn't explain.

What truly excited him were ideas.

Rohan loved building things. As a child, he spent hours taking apart old toys and trying to rebuild them in different ways. Later, he started creating small gadgets using wires, batteries, and broken electronics he found at home.

But he rarely talked about it.

He believed it was just a hobby—not something important.

One afternoon at school, his science teacher announced a project.

"For the next month, each student must create something that solves a real-life problem," the teacher said. "It can be anything—a model, a design, or a simple invention."

While most students planned posters or basic experiments, Rohan felt a spark of excitement.

That evening, he sat at his desk surrounded by tools, wires, and small pieces of metal. After hours of thinking, he had an idea.

In his neighborhood, the streetlights often stayed on during the daytime, wasting electricity.

So Rohan decided to build a simple automatic streetlight system that could turn on only when it became dark.

For weeks, he worked quietly in his room. Some nights the circuit failed. Other times the light refused to turn off.

But Rohan didn't give up.

Finally, after many attempts, the small system worked perfectly.

When he demonstrated it in class, the tiny bulb lit up when he covered the sensor and turned off when the light returned.

The classroom filled with amazed whispers.

"That's impressive," his teacher said.

For the first time, Rohan felt proud of something he had created.

His teacher encouraged him to present the project at the school science exhibition.

When Rohan told his parents about it, they were supportive—but surprised.

"You built all of that yourself?" his father asked.

Rohan nodded.

At the exhibition, many visitors stopped at his table to watch the model work. Some asked questions about how it functioned and how it could help save energy.

Standing there, explaining his invention, Rohan felt something he had never felt before.

He felt like he belonged.

That night, after returning home, he finally gathered the courage to speak honestly with his parents.

"I know everyone expects me to become a doctor," he said carefully. "But I think I want to study engineering… and create things that solve problems."

His parents were quiet for a moment.

Then his father smiled gently.

"What matters most," he said, "is that you choose a path that truly excites you."

For the first time, Rohan realized something important.

Sometimes the hardest part of growing up isn't working hard.

It's having the courage to follow the path that feels truly your own. 🌟
