Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: The Unexpected Proposal

Emma Carter stared at the huge glass building in front of her. The words "Knight Corporation" were shining at the top of the building.

Her heart was beating fast.

She had never imagined that one phone call would bring her here.

Just two hours ago, she was working at a small café near her college. Her life was simple and quiet. She struggled to pay her college fees, worked part-time, and tried to take care of her sick mother.

But now everything felt different.

A black luxury car stopped beside her.

A tall man stepped out of the car and looked at her.

"Miss Emma Carter?" he asked politely.

Emma nodded nervously.

"Yes… that's me."

"Mr. Alexander Knight is waiting for you."

Emma followed him inside the building. The lobby was enormous and luxurious. Marble floors, golden lights, and expensive decorations surrounded her.

She felt completely out of place.

Soon they reached the top floor.

The assistant opened a large door.

"Please go in."

Emma slowly walked inside.

A man was standing near the large window, looking at the city below.

He was tall, wearing a perfectly tailored black suit. His presence filled the entire room with power and authority.

This was Alexander Knight.

The youngest billionaire in the city.

Cold. Ruthless. Untouchable.

He turned around slowly and looked at Emma.

His sharp grey eyes examined her from head to toe.

"You're Emma Carter," he said calmly.

It wasn't a question. It was a statement.

Emma felt nervous under his intense gaze.

"Yes… I am."

Alexander walked towards his desk and sat down.

"Sit."

Emma carefully sat in the chair in front of him.

The silence in the room was heavy.

Finally, Alexander spoke.

"My grandfather wants me to get married."

Emma blinked in confusion.

"I… don't understand."

Alexander slid a document across the table.

"It's simple," he said coldly. "You marry me."

Emma almost choked.

"WHAT?"

Alexander didn't react to her shock.

"This will be a contract marriage," he continued. "One year. After that, we divorce."

Emma stared at him as if he had lost his mind.

"Why would I marry a stranger?"

Alexander leaned back in his chair.

"Because you need money."

Emma froze.

"How do you know about that?"

Alexander's lips curved into a faint smile.

"I know everything about you, Miss Carter."

He continued calmly.

"Your father died five years ago. Your mother is sick and needs expensive treatment. You're working two jobs just to survive."

Emma's face turned pale.

Everything he said was true.

Alexander looked at her seriously.

"I'll pay all your mother's medical bills. I'll also give you five million dollars after the divorce."

Emma couldn't believe what she was hearing.

Five million dollars.

That amount of money could completely change her life.

But something felt wrong.

"Why me?" she asked quietly.

Alexander's expression became cold again.

"My grandfather likes you," he said. "And I need a wife to satisfy him."

Emma looked down at the contract in front of her.

One signature.

One decision.

That was all it would take to change her entire life.

Alexander spoke again.

"You have ten minutes to decide."

Emma's mind was racing.

If she refused, nothing would change.

She would go back to her difficult life.

But if she accepted…

Everything would be different.

Finally, with trembling hands, Emma picked up the pen.

She took a deep breath.

And signed the contract.

Alexander watched her silently.

"Good," he said.

Emma looked up at him nervously.

But Alexander's next words made her heart sink.

"Just remember one thing, Emma."

"This marriage means nothing to me."
