Chapter 1: The Ashes of Betrayal and the Dawn of Rebirth

The End of the Dream

The rain did not fall; it hammered. It was a relentless, icy curtain that separated the world of the living from the world of the dead. Su Qingwan lay on the cold, wet pavement, her body broken, her blood mixing with the dirty water of the gutter.

Above her, the neon lights of the city blurred into streaks of red and blue. Sirens wailed in the distance, but they sounded far away, as if they were coming from another dimension. She tried to lift her hand, to reach for the phone in her pocket, but her fingers were numb, heavy with the weight of her own life draining away.

"Qingwan!"

The voice cut through the rain. It was a voice she had loved for ten years. A voice she had built her entire life around.

Gu Yanchen stood under the awning of the luxury hotel, his black suit pristine, untouched by the mud and grime of the street. He held an umbrella, shielding himself from the storm, but he did not step forward. He did not call for help. He simply watched her, his expression unreadable, his eyes dark and cold.

"Yanchen..." Su Qingwan whispered, her voice cracking. "Help me."

Gu Yanchen tilted his head slightly, a gesture that was so familiar, so intimate, yet now it felt like a knife twisting in her chest. "Qingwan, you know I can't."

"Why?" she choked out, blood bubbling from the corner of her mouth. "We were engaged. We were supposed to get married next month. You said... you said you loved me."

"I did," Gu Yanchen said, his voice smooth, devoid of the panic that should have been there. "But love is a luxury, Qingwan. And right now, I need to protect my future."

He gestured to the car behind him. Inside, sitting in the back seat, was a woman Su Qingwan knew well. Lin Yue. Her own sister. The sister she had protected, the sister she had given her inheritance to, the sister she had begged her father to support.

"Lin Yue?" Su Qingwan's eyes widened. "She's... she's your wife?"

"She is my wife," Gu Yanchen corrected. "And you... you are the obstacle."

The world spun. The rain seemed to slow down. Su Qingwan felt a strange calmness wash over her. The pain in her chest was fading, replaced by a cold, hard realization. For ten years, she had been blind. She had thought Gu Yanchen was her savior. She had thought he was the only man who understood her. She had given him her family's resources, her connections, her very soul. And in return, he had used her to climb the ladder, and now that he had reached the top, he had discarded her like a broken tool.

"You killed me," she whispered, the words tasting like ash.

"I saved myself," Gu Yanchen said. "And I saved Lin Yue. You were always too weak, Qingwan. Too soft. You didn't understand the game."

He turned his back on her. He opened the car door, and Lin Yue stepped out, wearing a dress that Su Qingwan had bought for her own wedding. She smiled, a cruel, triumphant smile.

"Goodbye, sister," Lin Yue said. "Don't worry. We'll take care of your family. We'll make sure they know you died a hero."

The car doors slammed shut. The engine roared to life. The taillights disappeared into the rain, leaving Su Qingwan alone in the gutter.

She closed her eyes. The darkness was not scary. It was peaceful. It was the end of the pain.

But as the darkness took her, a voice echoed in her mind. A voice that was not her own.

"If you could go back... would you choose again?"

Su Qingwan tried to answer, but her lips were sealed by the cold.

"Choose again."

The Awakening

The first thing she felt was the warmth.

It was a soft, golden warmth that wrapped around her like a blanket. It was not the cold rain. It was not the pain of broken bones. It was the warmth of a silk sheet, the warmth of a room heated by a central air system.

Su Qingwan opened her eyes.

She was not in the gutter. She was not bleeding. She was lying in a bed. A large, luxurious bed with white linens and a canopy. The room was filled with the scent of lavender and expensive perfume.

She sat up, her heart pounding. She looked down at her hands. They were smooth, unblemished. No scars. No blood.

"Qingwan?"

The voice came from the doorway. She turned her head.

Standing there was a man. He was young, handsome, with sharp features and a kind smile. He wore a white shirt and black trousers. He held a tray of breakfast.

"Father?" Su Qingwan whispered.

The man smiled, walking into the room. "Good morning, my daughter. You slept in late. I thought you might have a headache from the party last night."

Su Qingwan froze. The party.

She looked around the room. The decor was familiar. The painting on the wall. The vase on the desk. The calendar on the wall.

She grabbed the calendar.

October 15, 2018.

Her breath hitched. October 15, 2018. That was the day before her engagement party with Gu Yanchen. That was the day before she had given him the keys to her family's company. That was the day before she had started her slow descent into hell.

"I... I'm back," she whispered, tears welling in her eyes. "I'm back."

"Back from where?" her father asked, setting the tray down on the bedside table. "Did you have a nightmare?"

Su Qingwan looked at her father. In her past life, he had been sick. He had died of a heart attack two years after she gave Gu Yanchen control of the company. He had died alone, thinking his daughter had betrayed him.

But now, he was here. He was healthy. He was smiling.

"No, Father," Su Qingwan said, her voice trembling. "I had a dream. A very bad dream."

She stood up and walked to the window. The city outside was bright, bustling, full of life. It was the same city she had died in, but it felt different now. It felt like a stage, and she was the only one who knew the script.

"Qingwan?" her father asked, concern in his voice. "Are you alright?"

She turned to him. She saw the worry lines on his face. She saw the love in his eyes. In her past life, she had taken this for granted. She had been so focused on Gu Yanchen that she had forgotten to cherish the people who actually loved her.

"I'm fine, Father," she said, forcing a smile. "I just... I realized something important."

"What's that?"

"I realized that I don't want to make the same mistakes again."

Her father frowned slightly. "What mistakes?"

Su Qingwan walked back to the bed and sat down. She looked at her hands again. She could feel the pulse in her wrists. She was alive. She had a second chance.

"I realized that I need to be stronger," she said. "I need to protect this family. I need to protect you."

Her father's eyes softened. "You are always strong, Qingwan. You've always been the one who held us together."

"No," she said, shaking her head. "I was weak. I was blind. But not anymore."

She took a deep breath. The air smelled of lavender and hope.

"Father," she said, her voice steady. "I need to talk to you about the engagement."

Her father's smile faded. "The engagement? With Gu Yanchen?"

"Yes," she said. "I need to know everything. Everything about him. Everything about his family. Everything about the company."

Her father hesitated. "Qingwan, you know I don't like to interfere in your personal life. But if you're asking for information..."

"I'm not asking for permission," she said, her eyes flashing with a new intensity. "I'm asking for the truth. Because I think... I think I need to know if he's the right man for me."

Her father studied her face. He saw something in her eyes that he hadn't seen before. It was a fire. A determination. It was the look of a woman who had seen the end of the world and decided to rebuild it.

"Alright," he said slowly. "I'll tell you everything. But you must promise me one thing."

"What?"

"Promise me that you will be happy. No matter what you decide."

Su Qingwan smiled. It was a sad smile, but it was real. "I promise."

The Engagement Party

The engagement party was held at the Grand Hotel. It was a lavish affair, filled with the city's elite. The lights were bright, the music was loud, and the champagne flowed like water.

Su Qingwan stood in the corner of the room, watching the crowd. She wore a red dress, a color that symbolized luck and passion. In her past life, she had worn white. She had wanted to be pure. She had wanted to be innocent.

But innocence was a weakness. And she was done being weak.

"Qingwan!"

The voice came from behind her. She turned to see Gu Yanchen approaching. He looked exactly the same as he had in her past life. Handsome, charming, confident. He wore a black suit, and he held a glass of champagne.

"Yanchen," she said, her voice calm.

He smiled, stepping closer. "You look beautiful tonight. As always."

"Thank you," she said. "You look... well."

He laughed, a light, easy sound. "I'm just happy to be here. With you."

He reached out and took her hand. His touch was warm, but she felt a chill run down her spine. She knew what that touch meant. It was a claim. It was a promise. It was a trap.

"Are you ready?" he asked. "For the toast?"

She looked at him. She saw the love in his eyes. Or at least, she thought she did. But now, she knew better. She knew that love was a mask. And Gu Yanchen was a master of masks.

"I'm ready," she said.

They walked to the center of the room. The music stopped. The crowd fell silent. The host stepped forward, holding a microphone.

"Ladies and gentlemen," he announced. "We are here to celebrate the engagement of Su Qingwan and Gu Yanchen. Two of the most promising young people in the city."

Applause erupted. Su Qingwan stood next to Gu Yanchen, her hand in his. She felt the weight of his grip. It was tight. Too tight.

"Now," the host said. "Let's hear from the groom."

Gu Yanchen stepped forward. He looked at the crowd, then at Su Qingwan. He smiled, a smile that was meant to be charming.

"Qingwan," he said, his voice carrying through the room. "When I first met you, I knew you were the one. You were kind. You were beautiful. You were everything I wanted."

He paused, looking into her eyes. "I know that some people might think I'm too good for you. But I promise you, I will spend the rest of my life making you happy."

The crowd cheered. Su Qingwan felt a wave of nausea.

In her past life, she had believed every word. She had thought he was a prince. She had thought he was her destiny.

But now, she knew the truth. He was a wolf in sheep's clothing. And she was the lamb.

"Thank you," she said, her voice steady. "I'm honored."

She stepped forward. She took the microphone from the host.

"Gu Yanchen," she said, looking at him. "You said you would spend the rest of your life making me happy."

"Yes," he said, smiling.

"Then I have a question," she said. "What happens if I don't want to be happy?"

The crowd went silent. Gu Yanchen's smile faltered.

"What do you mean?" he asked.

"I mean," she said, her voice rising, "that I have spent my whole life trying to make you happy. I have given you my family's resources. I have given you my trust. I have given you my love."

She looked around the room. She saw the faces of the people who had supported her. Her father. Her friends. Her colleagues.

"And what have I gotten in return?" she asked. "I have gotten nothing. I have gotten nothing but pain."

Gu Yanchen stepped forward, his face darkening. "Qingwan, what are you talking about? This is a joke, right?"

"No," she said. "It's not a joke."

She turned to the crowd. "I am breaking the engagement."

The room exploded into whispers. People gasped. Some looked shocked. Some looked confused.

"Qingwan!" Gu Yanchen shouted. "You can't do this! You can't break the engagement!"

"Why not?" she asked. "Because you want to? Because you want to use me?"

She looked at him, her eyes cold. "I know what you are, Gu Yanchen. I know what you've done. And I'm not going to let you do it again."

Gu Yanchen's face turned red. "You're crazy! You're making a scene!"

"I'm making a statement," she said. "And I'm not the only one who knows the truth."

She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small device. A recorder.

"I recorded everything," she said. "Every conversation. Every promise. Every lie."

She pressed a button. The sound of her voice echoed through the room.

"I need to protect my future," Gu Yanchen's voice said. "You are the obstacle."

The room went silent. The recording played on.

"She was always too weak," Gu Yanchen's voice continued. "She didn't understand the game."

The crowd gasped. People looked at Gu Yanchen with shock and disgust.

Gu Yanchen looked at the recorder, his face pale. "Qingwan, you can't do this! You're ruining everything!"

"I'm saving myself," she said. "And I'm saving my family."

She turned to her father, who was standing in the back of the room. He looked proud. He looked relieved.

"Father," she said. "I'm sorry I made you worry."

Her father walked forward. He put his hand on her shoulder. "You don't need to apologize, Qingwan. You did the right thing."

Gu Yanchen stepped forward, his face twisted in anger. "You think you can just walk away? You think you can just ruin my reputation?"

"I think," Su Qingwan said, "that you ruined your own reputation. And I think that the world is better off without you."

She turned to the crowd. "I am Su Qingwan. And I am not going to let anyone use me again."

She dropped the microphone. It hit the floor with a loud clatter.

"Goodbye, Gu Yanchen," she said. "And good luck."

She turned and walked away. She didn't look back. She didn't need to. She knew what was coming. She knew that Gu Yanchen would try to destroy her. She knew that he would try to take everything she had.

But she was ready. She was reborn. And she was not going to let him win.

The First Move

Su Qingwan walked out of the hotel. The rain had stopped. The air was cool, but it felt fresh. It felt like a new beginning.

She got into her car and drove home. She didn't go to her room. She went to her father's office.

Her father was there, sitting at his desk. He looked tired. He had been working hard to keep the company afloat.

"Qingwan," he said. "I heard what happened."

"I know," she said. "I'm sorry."

"Don't be," he said. "You did the right thing."

"I need to know everything," she said. "About the company. About Gu Yanchen. About the debt."

Her father sighed. "It's not good, Qingwan. The company is in trouble. We have a lot of debt. And Gu Yanchen... he was supposed to help us."

"He was supposed to help us," she said. "But he was just using us."

"Yes," her father said. "He was using us."

"I need to fix this," she said. "I need to save the company."

Her father looked at her. "You can't do it alone, Qingwan. It's too big."

"I don't need to do it alone," she said. "I need to find the right people. I need to find the right allies."

She sat down at the desk. She opened her father's laptop. She started to search.

She searched for Gu Yanchen's company. She searched for his assets. She searched for his connections.

She found something. Something that she hadn't seen before.

"Father," she said. "Look at this."

Her father looked at the screen. "What is this?"

"It's a list," she said. "A list of all the companies Gu Yanchen has invested in. And it's all... fake."

"Fake?" her father asked.

"Yes," she said. "He's been using our money to invest in fake companies. He's been stealing from us."

Her father's face turned pale. "How is that possible?"

"Because I was too blind to see it," she said. "But now I see it."

She closed the laptop. "I need to find ......
