Chapter 1 - 1 The Four Symbols Guard the Universe

Omens Foretell Chaos, The Four Symbols Gather at Kunlun

In the ancient era, pure qi rose to form the heavens, while turbid qi sank to form the earth. Atop Mount Kunlun stood the Cauldron of Heaven and Earth, which maintained the balance of yin and yang. The cauldron was engraved with totems of the Four Symbols—Azure Dragon, White Tiger, Vermilion Bird, and Black Tortoise—each guarding one of the four cardinal directions to protect all life in the world.

One morning, the eastern sky suddenly darkened like dusk. Dark green clouds churned into dragon shapes, yet carried billowing evil energy. In an instant, earthquakes shook the land and rivers changed course. In the western border, smoke and flames of war rose as peaceful villages were repeatedly attacked, and the aura of weapons and warfare soared into the sky. In the south, the sun blazed without rain for three months; the earth cracked, rivers and lakes dried up, and even forests were set ablaze by mysterious fires. In the north, heavy snow fell relentlessly, and cold waves carrying ice shards ravaged the land, freezing rivers and seas solid for dozens of feet, bringing great suffering to the people.

Before the Jade Void Palace on Mount Kunlun stood a swordsman in green robes, a blue-scaled jade pendant glimmering at his sword tassel—it was Meng Zhang, the Azure Dragon, guardian of the east. He had just returned from the Eastern Sea, his brow furrowed with worry. Soon, a white figure swept over like a gust of wind: a warrior in white robes holding an iron broadsword that gleamed with cold light. This was Jian Bing, the White Tiger, guardian of the west. "Meng Zhang, the unrest in the west is no ordinary war—there's a foul stench of the Demon Realm in the aura of battle!"

Before he finished speaking, a streak of crimson light cut across the sky. A woman in red robes arrived riding flames, with a bow and arrows at her waist. She was Ling Guang, the Vermilion Bird, guardian of the south. "The drought in the south is only superficial; magma churns beneath the earth, and chaotic energy is stirring!"

As the three deliberated, a dark shadow slowly emerged from the ground. A scholar in black robes walked forward over water, with twin hammers hanging at his sides. This was Zhi Ming, the Black Tortoise, guardian of the north. "Beneath the Northern Ice Plains, the sealing energy is fading—You Sha is returning!"

The four entered the Jade Void Palace and saw that the Cauldron of Heaven and Earth was already covered in cracks, and the light of the Four Symbols totems had dimmed. The Immortal Guardian of the Cauldron sighed deeply: "The millennial Dark Calamity has arrived. You Sha, the Demon Lord, was sealed by the power of the Four Symbols long ago, and now he has broken free by taking advantage of the shift in cosmic energy. To repair the cauldron, we must retrieve the four Spirit Pearls—the Wood Pearl, Metal Pearl, Fire Pearl, and Water Pearl—scattered across the four directions. Otherwise, chaotic energy will devour all things!"

The four exchanged glances, their eyes filled with resolve. Meng Zhang spoke first: "The Eastern Wood Pearl lies in the depths of the Eastern Sea—I shall set off at once!" Jian Bing gripped his sword and stood up: "The Western Metal Pearl is in the Western Desert—I'll go retrieve it!" Ling Guang drew her bowstring: "The Southern Fire Pearl is on the Volcanic Island—I will not let You Sha get there first!" Zhi Ming said in a deep voice: "The Northern Water Pearl in the Northern Ice Plains is my responsibility!"

The four figures sped off in different directions, and wind and clouds shifted across the sky. A battle to defend the universe had begun.

Stratagems at the Eastern Sea, The Azure Dragon Claims the Wood Pearl

In the depths of the Eastern Sea, ten thousand feet beneath the waves, the Black-Scaled Shark Clan had lived for generations. Their bodies were covered in black scales, and they could command water and navigate ships—they were the guardians of the Eastern Wood Pearl.

Meng Zhang took human form and walked along the seabed sandbar in green robes. Soon, he was stopped by the clan's guards. The lead commander held a trident, his eyes sharp with caution: "Who dares trespass on our territory?"

"I am Meng Zhang, come to seek the Wood Pearl. Please inform your chief." Meng Zhang bowed respectfully, his tone sincere.

The commander sneered: "The pearl is our clan's sacred treasure—how could we give it to an outsider? Moreover, our seer foretold that a villain would come to steal it. Are you a spy from the Demon Realm?"

As soon as he spoke, the surrounding water suddenly turned murky. A dark shadow flashed by, and several guards fell to the ground, their wounds tainted with black demonic energy. A sinister voice echoed from the shadows: "People of the Shark Clan, this Azure Dragon has come to steal the pearl—look, he attacked our guards as soon as he arrived!"

Meng Zhang frowned slightly and waved his hand to send out a streak of green light, forcing the shadow to reveal itself—a demon with bat-like wings. "Please see clearly," he declared loudly. "This is a spy from the Demon Realm, who attacked the guards to frame me!"

But the commander was unmoved and summoned more warriors: "Words alone prove nothing—seize him first!" In an instant, countless water arrows and ice blades flew toward Meng Zhang. Unwilling to harm the clan members, he could only block the attacks with his sword and retreat as he fought.

As they battled near a coral reef, Meng Zhang suddenly stopped and shouted in alarm toward the commander's back: "Look out!" A massive rock, wrapped in demonic energy, was hurtling toward the clan's settlement. Without hesitation, Meng Zhang leaped into the air and slashed his sword to create a green light barrier, barely stopping the rock—but the impact sent him reeling, blood trickling from his lips.

"Chief!" the commander exclaimed. An elderly man with white hair approached slowly, looking at Meng Zhang with a sigh: "I have used the seer's power to uncover the truth—the Demon Realm spy was sowing discord. The Wood Pearl concerns the safety of heaven and earth—how could our clan hoard it?"

The chief led Meng Zhang to the clan's forbidden grounds, where a green pearl floated above a pool of water, radiating gentle wood energy. Meng Zhang took the pearl and bowed in gratitude: "Thank you for your trust, Chief. If you ever need aid, the Azure Dragon will not hesitate to help!"

As he left the Eastern Sea, Meng Zhang sensed demonic energy stirring in the shadows. He knew that You Sha's minions had set their sights on the other pearls, and he must hurry to meet the other three Symbols...
