Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: When the Sky Trembled

The academy was different that morning. It felt heavy. Like something you could not see was pushing down on everything. Kael noticed it the moment he stepped outside. The students were quieter than usual. Even the air felt tense. It was like the whole world was waiting for something to happen.

"Hey " Lyra said as she walked up beside him. Her usual calm face was a little off. "You feel it too right?" Kael nodded. "Yeah " he said quietly.

Then Rex joined them cracking his neck. "Finally things are getting interesting again " he said.. Lyra frowned. "This is not normal " she said. Aurora appeared behind them silently. "It is not " she said. All three of them turned to her. Her eyes were narrowed, looking up at the sky. "The barrier around the academy is getting weaker " she said.

Kaels heart skipped a beat. "Barrier?" he asked.. Before anyone could explain a loud alarm went off across the whole academy. A mechanical voice followed away. "Emergency alert. Emergency alert. All students, go to your positions. This is not a drill."

The atmosphere changed in an instant. Students started running. Instructors appeared out of nowhere. Barriers began to activate around the academy. Kaels eyes got sharper. "What is happening?" he asked. Aurora answered calmly "Something is coming."

The sky got darker. Clouds twisted in a way. Then a crack appeared. Just like that night. Kael froze. "No way " he said. The sky split open and golden light poured down.. This time it was not just one figure. Multiple figures started to come down each one giving off a lot of energy. Students dropped to their knees. Some could not even breathe. "Gods " Lyra whispered.

Kael clenched his fists. His body was shaking,. Not because he was scared. It was because the power inside him was reacting again. Stronger than ever.

"Stay back!" a powerful voice echoed. A big barrier formed above the academy. Aiden Luxor stood at the front his magic expanding as much as it could. Eryndor and Rivena supported him. Kaelithras runes spread across the sky making the barrier stronger.. Even then cracks started to form.

"They are too many " Lyra said. Aurora stepped forward. "We do not have a choice " she said. Her ice spread across the ground. Rex grinned. "Finally " he said. Lightning exploded around him.

Kael looked up. One of the gods stepped forward. It was different from the others. Stronger. Its golden eyes locked onto him. "There you are " it said. Kaels heart was pounding violently. "You should not exist " the god said. Those were the words from that night.

Kael stepped forward. Lyra grabbed his arm. "Do not " she said.. Kael said, "I have to." He gently pulled away. His eyes never left the sky.

The god raised its hand. "End him " it said. The moment it did the barrier shattered. The whole academy shook violently. Students screamed. Energy exploded everywhere.

"Defend the students!" Orions voice thundered across the battlefield. He appeared instantly standing in front of Kael. The pressure around him was completely different now. Even the gods paused. "Orion " one of them muttered.

Orion said, "Stay " without looking at Kael. Kael clenched his fists. "I am not running this time " he said. Orions voice got a little harder. "This is not something you can handle yet " he said.

Before Kael could respond a divine beam shot down. Orion blocked it instantly. The force pushed him back a little. "So this is how it is " Orion muttered. Then he turned slightly. "Kael " he said. "Survive " he said quietly.

The moment Orion vanished. He reappeared in the sky facing the gods directly. The battlefield erupted. Explosions filled the air. Magic clashed against power. The academy turned into a war zone.

Kael stood there frozen for a second. He watched everything unfold. Students were getting injured. Instructors were fighting desperately. The sky was burning.

"Damn it " Kael said. He clenched his fists. "I am not useless " he said. The power inside him responded away. The glow appeared, stronger and more stable.

A god descended, landing directly in front of him. The ground shattered. "You " the god said. Kael raised his head. His eyes were glowing faintly. "Come " he said.

The god attacked, faster than anything Kael had faced before. Kael barely reacted, dodging in time.. The shockwave alone sent him flying. He crashed into a wall. Pain shot through his body. He stood up again. "Again " he said.

The god frowned slightly. "You should be dead " it said. Kael wiped the blood from his mouth. "Not yet " he said. The next attack came, faster and stronger. Kael focused. His body moved, better than before, sharper and more controlled.

Still it was not enough. The god grabbed him by the throat lifted him off the ground. "This ends now " it said. Kaels vision blurred. His breathing stopped.

Then he heard that voice. "Now " it said. The glow exploded. Blue energy burst from his body. The gods grip loosened. "What?" it said.

Kaels hand moved on its own grabbing something that was not there before. For a split second a blade appeared. It was dark and terrifying. It was real. Kaels eyes widened. "I did it " he said.

The next second the blade disappeared. The power vanished, like it was never there. The god did not hesitate. It struck, slamming Kael into the ground, hard and crushing.

There was silence. Dust filled the air. Lyra screamed, "Kael!!" The god raised its hand again. "To end it " it said.

Then a massive beam of light cut through the sky. The god was blown back instantly. Aiden stood there breathing heavily. "You are not dying here " he said.

Kael lay on the ground barely conscious. His vision was fading,. One thought remained: I almost had it.

Above Orion clashed with gods. His power was overwhelming. Even he was being pushed back. "This is the beginning " one god said. "The war has started."

The sky began to close. The gods slowly retreated,. Their presence remained. Their threat was unavoidable.

The battlefield fell silent destroyed, broken and burning. Lyra rushed to Kaels side tears in her eyes. "Idiot do not scare me like that " she said. Kael forced a smile. "I am still alive " he said.

Inside him the weapon stirred again stronger than ever before closer than ever before. " Time " Kael whispered, "I will finish it."

And far away Xerathion opened its eyes once more. "It has begun " it said. The war, between gods and the God Slayer had officially started.
