"I'm sorry," I broke the silence between us, "I didn't know you were scared of insects."
Kay laughed and scratched the back of his neck nervously, "I wouldn't say I'm scared it's just-"
I raised my eyebrows in silent judgment.
"Ok fine they scare the shit out of me!"
I bit the inside of my cheek to stop myself from laughing. When I calmed down enough to speak it came out strained, "Everyone has something they're scared of."
Kay eyed me out of the corner of his eye and sighed, "What're you scared of?"
A heavy silence stretched out between us. I considered whether or not to answer honestly. Kay caught on before I had to.
"Shit. I'm-I'm sorry."
I smiled bitterly and waved away his concern, "It's fine. I'm also really scared of radiation."
"I think everyone's scared of radiation."
"I guess," I shrugged, "But not everyone works in a building storing several radioactive samples."
Kay hissed as if he'd been burned, "Why does a plant lab have radioactive material?"
