Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: Zombie Heroes? Compared to That, They’re Nothing but a Drizzle

"With the more annoying little nuisances taken care of, once I get rid of you, this world should be safe, right? Pretty simple, really."

A faint, almost kindly smile curved Roland's lips. Looking at Zombie Captain Marvel in his grasp, he lifted his other hand, placed it on her head, and lightly closed his fingers around her skull.

The next second, a chaotic black-and-white energy suddenly welled up in the center of his palm. That energy far surpassed the durability of Zombie Captain Marvel's body. Once it had gathered to a sufficient degree, Roland unleashed it point-blank into her head.

Zombie Captain Marvel sensed that something was wrong—

but it was already too late.

The chaotic energy was far too corrosive. It happened almost instantly; she did not even have time to let out a scream.

Under the impact of that power, her head dissolved completely. Only a headless body remained. Then, when Roland released his grip, the rest of the corpse disintegrated in midair as it fell, leaving not even a scrap behind.

In less than a few minutes, Roland wiped out every zombie hero visible on the nearby streets. Just to be safe, he did not even leave bodies behind, so that traitors like Mister Fantastic would have no chance to study or reproduce the zombie virus.

After gaining the Void's abilities as part of the fusion, Roland had an enormous variety of offensive methods at his disposal—even though Sentry alone was already anything but weak.

"Looks like that's finished. Once I deal with Magneto—the idiot who spread the virus before the reset—this world should be completely safe. Anything left after that will just be small fry…"

"Oh, right. There's still Galactus."

Roland thought to himself, then rose higher into the sky until he reached the highest point above the city. Using his super-senses, he swept the surrounding area once, confirmed that there were no zombie heroes left nearby, and only then spoke to the people in the livestream:

"So, everyone—did you get it?"

"When a zombie outbreak appears, you have to eliminate the source before the situation spins out of control. Keep it contained within manageable limits, and that stops things from escalating—as long as nothing unexpected happens."

"It's simple, isn't it?"

"Maybe you still don't know who those zombies were, so let me give you a quick explanation. First, the one carrying the shield—people call him Captain America…"

Even while finishing off Zombie Captain Marvel, Roland did not forget to play the role of a helpful commentator, introducing the identities of the zombie heroes he had just destroyed to the viewers in the stream.

The main point was to make sure they understood the setting.

Zombies by themselves were not all that interesting. What really made it hit hard was the contrast—former heroes turned into zombies, devouring the very people they used to protect.

Now that the crisis was resolved, Roland was finally in the mood to chat with the others.

Mostly because everything had ended so quickly that it barely felt real.

At this point, Roland finished explaining the background and continued, using the last bit of time before ending the stream:

"…And that's basically the situation. I think you all understand now how this zombie outbreak came about. If I hadn't been here, the whole world would have fallen and become a paradise for zombie heroes. They'd be hungrier than locusts and eat every last person on the planet."

After hearing Roland's explanation, the group members could not help but sigh in dismay. Thank goodness Roland had been there. Otherwise…

They did not even dare imagine how hellish that scene would have been.

[Loves Taking Pictures]: Ugh… oh my god, I can't do this. Just imagining that is terrifying!

[Loves Taking Pictures]: I feel like I'm not going to be able to sleep tonight.

After sending those two messages, March 7th followed them up with a chibi crying sticker of herself.

And honestly, it was not just her. Now that Roland had flown higher, the livestream's view had risen with him into the sky as well. That was a relief. Earlier, when the feed had shown half-eaten bodies lying in the streets, several of the viewers had nearly thrown up. The more seasoned ones handled it better.

For example, Kaguya Houraisan and Lucy from 2077. One had lived through the most chaotic age of flesh-eating youkai; the other was an active mercenary who had already seen the darkest side of Night City.

Besides them, Yuji Itadori was doing relatively okay too. During curse-extermination missions, he had seen plenty of human remains before, so he was more composed than most—though it still made him feel awful.

Among the rest, Ben, Mark, and March 7th were having a rougher time. That scene, which was basically hell on earth, had clearly left all three of them deeply shaken. Mark, in particular, was still at a point in time before his powers had awakened. He had not seen many truly large-scale horrors yet. He had not gone through the father-son battle, and he definitely had not had his head slammed through a subway train by his dad.

Ben, meanwhile, had saved the universe and witnessed plenty of grand spectacles—but not this kind of blood-soaked horror. The scenes he was used to were more the "cosmic," "magnificent" kind.

As for March 7th…

there was even less to say.

[Hero Time!]: Yeah, that was seriously disgusting. I couldn't even keep watching—it completely killed my appetite for my slushie.

[Hero Time!]: And honestly, props to Multiversal Variant for staying completely calm in front of something like that. That kind of mental toughness—I've only ever seen it in my grandpa, a legendary plumber.

[Invincible]: Oh God… that zombie virus thing is way too terrifying…

[Invincible]: Eating the people they used to protect? For those superheroes who turned into zombies, that must've been horrible.

[Invincible]: Sigh. I really hope I can still fall asleep tonight.

Sitting in his bedroom, Mark looked miserable. His mind was still full of those images—intestines hanging out, faces chewed into something like red apples.

Every time the thought resurfaced, he could not help shaking his head hard, trying to fling the images out of his mind.

One way or another, he really had thrown up earlier.

While Roland had still been slaughtering the zombie heroes, Mark had already lost control, clapped a hand over his mouth, rushed downstairs under Nolan's puzzled stare, and bolted into the bathroom to vomit his guts out.

If he had been a girl, Nolan might even have suspected pregnancy or something equally absurd—which definitely would have infuriated him. But seeing his son in that state, Nolan had still come over to ask if he was alright. Mark managed to brush him off by claiming he had eaten something bad.

[Wants to See the Moon]: That reaction is normal. Even I found what we just saw hard to take.

[Wants to See the Moon]: The people in this "chat group" really are all unusually important and extraordinary figures.

"Important?" Roland chuckled. "I've just got a little strength, that's all."

"Well then, I'll end the stream here for now."

Roland smiled and shook his head lightly, then shut off the livestream.

"So it was that disgusting, huh? I guess I should be more careful next time."

He sighed inwardly. He did not think the others were weak-willed; what they had just seen was not something most people could shrug off so easily. For many, it would probably leave lasting psychological scars.

If his own circumstances had been any different, he likely would not have handled it much better.

And then, the very next moment after turning off the stream, Roland suddenly looked up at the sky and fixed his gaze on the moon. As if speaking to himself, he said:

"Well? Since you like watching so much, did you enjoy the performance? Big-head. I just solved a zombie crisis that could've destroyed the multiverse. I did you a huge favor."

"He can see me?!"

Inside a lunar base, a certain big-headed observer was startled out of his wits. He hurriedly tapped across the control panel and switched away from the long-range surveillance feed.

Someone that powerful was not someone he could afford to provoke.

But as for the crisis being over…

"That's not necessarily true."

Looking at the image on another screen—a black cocoon larger than a planet, emblazoned with a massive black spider emblem—the Watcher could not help letting out a sigh.

Compared to that thing, the zombie crisis on Earth was nothing at all.

Just a light drizzle.
