Chapter 12 - CHAPTER 12-The Villain at Dawn

Dawn broke cold over Luna Crest Academy.

Mist clung to the ground, frost glinting silver in the early light. The arena stretched before them, a field of frozen grass and shadows. Students lined the perimeter, watching the morning unfold. Every eye was on the teams — but one pairing drew the sharpest attention.

Stage Two: Physical Battle Mode.

Principal Collins' voice echoed faintly over the field before fading. A whistle split the cold silence.

Todd moved first, calm, deliberate. His minions flanked him perfectly: Kael with his sharp grin, Riven with calculating eyes, and Lyric, who never smiled but missed nothing. Their formation was predatory, each step measured, ready to dismantle

Alice's team.

Alice scanned them, taking a steady breath. She had trained for precision, for strategy. Her plan: spread wide, stretch Todd's formation, and collapse inward to trap him. Her teammates fanned out with her signals, moving like controlled shadows.

For three heartbeats, it worked.

Then Kael struck. His grin widened as he intercepted Alice's fastest teammate mid-step, slamming him into the frost. The ground cracked beneath the impact. Before the boy could rise, Kael twisted his arm behind him, forcing him to the ground with a sharp, precise motion.

Riven moved next, his calculating eyes never leaving the battlefield. He caught the second teammate by surprise, hooking the ankle and driving him backward into the frozen turf. The snap of impact echoed faintly, muffled by the mist.

Lyric remained silent, always watching, always waiting. The third of Alice's team tried to approach her, thinking he could help. Lyric intercepted him in a seamless motion, a sweep of his leg that sent the boy sprawling onto his back, pinned by a knee. He didn't strike unnecessarily; he simply ensured that Alice's formation would collapse.

It happened with mechanical perfection. Three teammates down, immobilized, leaving Alice alone. She turned, eyes scanning the field, her breath shallow, mind racing. The minions had done their work. Todd stepped forward.

"You should have stayed behind them," he said quietly. "They would've protected you."

Alice straightened, glaring. "I don't hide behind anyone."

Her first strike was clean — a sharp elbow into his jaw. The crowd murmured. She followed with a kick aimed at his ribs. For a moment, hope surged.

Todd smiled faintly. Not impressed. Not angry. Just calculated. He absorbed the blows, stepping back only enough to regain balance.

Alice swung again — a flurry of strikes, desperation creeping into her movements. Todd's hand shot out, catching her wrist mid-swing. A snap of torque drove her elbow painfully backward. A knee followed into her side. Pain bloomed through her ribs. She twisted free and rose, shaking.

"You're fighting for memory," Todd said softly. "I fight for the future."

Alice lunged again. This time, Todd let her come.

He slipped inside her strike, redirecting her momentum into the frost. He twisted her body, forcing her to her knees, and drove a knee sharply into her already tender ribs.

The crowd cried out.

"Stand down, Alice!"

She ignored them. One arm hung lower, ribs fractured, blood at the corner of her mouth. Her breathing was ragged.

Todd circled, watching her with cold precision.

Then he acted, but now with focus. Kael, Riven, and Lyric didn't move again — their part was done.

Alice's teammates were down. Isolated. She was the only threat left.

He struck low, targeting her injured side deliberately. Fist into ribs, another blow into her shoulder. She staggered. She tried to defend with what remained of her strength, but Todd was relentless. Each strike had purpose — each one a demonstration of his dominance.

Alice attempted a sweep, aiming to throw him off balance. He sidestepped, caught her wrist, and twisted sharply. Another rib fractured. Pain shot through her chest, but she refused to fall completely.

Her legs buckled under the weight of the blows, frost biting through her hair as she forced herself upright again. Todd advanced slowly, watching her, savoring every stagger, every faltering breath.

"You think beauty makes you strong?" he whispered, low enough only she could hear. "It doesn't. Legacy doesn't make you alpha. Strength does."

She swung one final strike, more defiance than hope. Todd moved inside it and delivered a sharp blow to the side of her head. Alice collapsed, face down in the frost.

Her team tried to reach her, but Kael stepped in first, grinning at the futile struggle. Riven calculated the angles, cutting off any path forward. Lyric's eyes never left Alice, silently ensuring she remained where Todd wanted her.

Todd stood over her, his chest rising slowly, not even winded. Silence swept the arena. Frost and blood mixed at Alice's feet, her form bent and broken but defiant in posture.

He lifted his gaze to the crowd. To the academy. To every eye that had watched this morning.

"If I have to break every bond, every legacy, every pride in this place to become alpha," he said, voice calm, dark, and absolute, "then let them call me monster."

And with that, the dawn fully broke over Luna Crest Academy, illuminating the frost and the harsh lesson learned: the villain had claimed the first victory.

Alice's body would heal. Her pride would bleed. But in the shadow of Todd and his minions — Kael, Riven, and Lyric — the entire school learned just how far one wolf would go to secure power.
