Chapter 6 - Chapter 5: Allies and Rivals

The sun was beginning to rise over the city, but Gaon didn't notice. He was still in the subway tunnels, cleaning his scythe and replaying last night's battle in his mind. Every strike, every Shadow Step, every skill he used had felt like a test.

A faint glow appeared at the far end of the tunnel. Gaon tensed, ready to fight—but instead of a shadow, a young Grim Reaper appeared, a scythe strapped to their back and eyes glowing pale blue.

"Finally… someone new," the Reaper said, voice calm but firm. "You're Gaon, right? I've been sent to… guide you. Name's Kairo."

Gaon's brow furrowed. "Guide me? Or… test me?"

Kairo smirked. "Both. Welcome to the real underworld, rookie. You survived the park and subway battles, but that was just Level 1 danger. Bigger threats are coming. And the system won't always tell you everything."

Before Gaon could ask more, the ground shook violently. A massive shadow burst from the tunnel walls—a Level 4 Elite Soul. Its form was jagged, covered in spikes, and it moved with terrifying speed.

"Perfect timing," Kairo said, drawing their scythe. "Let's see if you've learned anything."

Gaon clenched his own weapon. His scythe glowed as he activated Shadow Fusion and Soul Bind, while Kairo moved with deadly precision, slicing through smaller shadows as the Elite Soul advanced.

The two Reapers fought as a team. Gaon teleported behind the creature, striking its side with Shadow Strike, while Kairo forced it into a trap with swift, precise slashes.

"Focus on its core!" Kairo shouted. "It evolves faster than you think!"

Gaon nodded, using Soul Scan to detect the Elite Soul's heart. He leapt high, binding it with chains of energy. The creature thrashed, claws smashing the concrete, sparks flying everywhere.

Working together, Gaon and Kairo unleashed a combined Shadow Fusion attack, blasting the Elite Soul into the system. Silence fell. The tunnels were quiet… again.

Kairo wiped sweat from their brow. "Not bad. You're learning fast. But this is only the start. There are rules, rival Reapers, and corrupted souls far stronger than you've faced. And one day, you'll discover secrets even the system hides."

Gaon gripped his scythe, determination blazing in his eyes. "I'm ready. I won't run anymore. I'll get stronger, and I'll survive."

Kairo nodded, a faint smile appearing. "Good. Then let's make sure you're ready for what's coming next. The modern world isn't just a battlefield—it's a testing ground. And the underworld… has eyes everywhere."

The Rival Appears

The city felt alive in a way Gaon had never noticed before. Shadows moved beneath streetlights, whispers floated through alleys, and the air carried the faint hum of souls.

Kairo led the way, scythe slung over their shoulder. "The system only shows part of the world," Kairo said. "You need to see it with your own eyes. Corrupted souls, hidden zones… even other Grim Reapers are out there. Not all are friendly."

Gaon nodded, gripping his scythe. "I've learned that the hard way."

As they turned a corner near the financial district, a surge of dark energy pulsed from an abandoned building. Dozens of corrupted souls swarmed the streets, attacking anyone in sight.

"Level 2 and 3 corrupted souls," Kairo warned. "Don't let them escape. People are down there."

Gaon and Kairo jumped into action. Gaon teleported between streetlights using Shadow Step Advanced, slicing shadows with Shadow Fusion, while Kairo controlled the swarm with precise, sweeping strikes.

It was chaos—shadows screaming, people running, neon lights reflecting off the battle. Gaon realized how fast the modern world changed at night, how life and death collided in ways no human could imagine.

Then, a new figure appeared above them, on the rooftop: a Grim Reaper clad in black and silver, scythe glowing violet. Their eyes met Gaon's, cold and sharp.

System Alert: "Unknown Grim Reaper detected. Host warned: Potential Rival."

The figure leapt down, landing effortlessly between Gaon and Kairo. Shadows immediately surrounded them, obeying their command.

"You must be Gaon," the stranger said, voice calm but dangerous. "I've been looking for you. Don't get in my way… or you'll regret it."

Gaon's hands tightened on his scythe. "Who are you?"

"I'm Lysander. And you… are going to learn why some Reapers hunt, while others protect," Lysander said, smirking. "Now step aside—or fight."

Before Gaon could respond, Lysander swung his scythe, sending a wave of shadow energy toward him. Gaon dodged with Shadow Step, countering with Soul Bind, but Lysander twisted in midair, evading every attack.

Kairo shouted, "Gaon! Don't underestimate him! He's fast—and strong!"

The city streets became a battlefield once more. Gaon realized this fight wasn't just about defeating a shadow—it was about survival, strategy, and proving himself against a rival Reaper.

The system pulsed urgently:

System: "Host, note: Rival Grim Reapers may be stronger than Elite Souls. Extreme caution required."

Gaon's heart pounded. His first true rival had appeared. And he knew one thing: this fight would teach him more than any mission or system alert ever could.
