That was uncomfortable. After that whole ordeal, I was tempted to take the offer to run away. It's not like it's hard, unfortunately, I have a bigger goal in mind. Once I reach the file I need, I will be gone.
Mason... an odd one. Not sure why he showed up at this engagement meeting. My mother had mentioned that I was engaged to the only heir of the family... How is there a sudden nephew in the picture? Not to mention how he acted. A sort of conceit in his gaze, like he was above everyone else. In a way, being from such a family, I guess he was, but in hierarchy, he was beneath even my cousin. I was trying to get a one on one with my new "fiancee" to reach a mutual understanding on this "marriage" but there were too many people around.
Having come out of the soothing bath I needed, I wrap myself in a towel before I notice something amiss. I could have sworn I had the broach my mother had given me by the dresser, and yet it is now gone. For someone so well trained in an industry of certain danger, I hate to admit that my perceptive skills are lacking.
As much as I would love to be able to keep track of everything all at once, I am only human you know? I can't help but take a deep breath. I have noticed a gaze looking at me before. It would be fair to assume that there must be hired guards to keep an eye out on the safety of the family. I had snuck out fairly easily last time, but the security must have increased from the last time I got out.
I take a good look out the window, seeing through the flowers in the garden. It's too dark to definitely know if there is anything watching me, although I can not shake off the feeling of being watched. Closing the window curtains, I make my way to my walk in closet to choose my pajamas. The closet was made for a princess, lace slips, silk sleeping gowns, luxuriously soft robes and nothing beats my comfy oversized t-shirt with baggy sweats. I make do with a short blue silk sleeping gown with its matching bloomer shorts. A long dress would limit my movements in case of an emergency. I walk out of the walk in closet to the bathroom. It kind of irritates me how much I have to walk in this big mansion. In my studio apartment, I walked from the bathroom to the kitchen in less than 15 steps. Lame but how could I complain... if only we had this much space at the orphanage.
My new closet could probably fit 5 bunk beds, shared by 15 children. The state of the orphanage was generally deplorable. You would be lucky to have a bed to yourself. That is... until the benefactor arrived. The benefactor changed things for the better and the conditions at the orphanage got much better, but I could hardly forget the hardships endured by everyone for years. I was old enough to remember, being 10 years old, I was grateful when she came along to take over for the previous headmaster. I could not forget that day...
