Chapter 26 - CHAPTER 27: ASHES AND OATHS

The fire had died, but the war had just begun.

Smoke still curled into the night sky like a warning, thick and suffocating. The warehouse—once a symbol of Darius Romano's power—was now nothing more than blackened bones and falling ash. The scent of destruction clung to everything.

Adrian stood at the edge of the ruins, his expression unreadable, but his silence was louder than the crackling debris.

Lily watched him carefully.

She had seen anger before. She had seen danger. But this… this was something deeper. Something colder.

"You're thinking too much," she said softly, stepping beside him.

Adrian didn't look at her.

"I'm thinking just enough," he replied. His voice was low, controlled—but beneath it, she could hear the storm.

A group of men approached from the shadows. Marco led them, his face tense.

"It's confirmed," Marco said. "The attack wasn't random."

Adrian's jaw tightened. "Say it."

Marco hesitated, then: "It was the Moretti family."

The name hung in the air like a death sentence.

Lily felt her stomach drop.

"The Morettis?" she whispered. "I thought the truce—"

"Is broken," Adrian cut in sharply.

For a moment, no one spoke.

Then Adrian turned, his dark eyes burning with something dangerous. "They didn't just burn a warehouse. They sent a message."

Marco nodded. "And they're expecting a response."

Adrian let out a slow breath, then looked back at the ruins.

"They'll get one."

Later that night, the mansion was quieter than usual.

Too quiet.

Lily sat in Adrian's office, her fingers tracing the rim of a glass she hadn't touched. Her thoughts were racing, trying to catch up with everything that had just happened.

War.

The word echoed in her mind.

She heard the door open behind her.

"You shouldn't be here," Adrian said.

She turned to face him. "And you shouldn't be doing this alone."

He walked further into the room, loosening his tie, his movements sharp and restless. "This isn't your fight, Lily."

She stood up. "It became my fight the moment I stayed."

That made him pause.

For a second, something softer flickered in his eyes—but it was gone just as quickly.

"You don't understand what's coming," he said.

"Then make me understand."

Silence stretched between them.

Finally, Adrian stepped closer, his voice dropping. "The Morettis don't play games. If we strike back, they won't just come for me. They'll come for everything… everyone."

Lily held his gaze. "Including me."

He didn't answer.

That was answer enough.

Across the city, in a dimly lit penthouse, another man watched the flames from a distance.

Vincenzo Moretti.

A slow smile curved his lips as he swirled the drink in his glass.

"Phase one is complete," he murmured.

A woman stepped out of the shadows behind him. Elegant. Dangerous.

"And Adrian Romano?" she asked.

Vincenzo's eyes gleamed. "He'll react. He always does."

"And when he does?"

Vincenzo turned, his smile widening.

"We take everything from him."

Back at the mansion, Lily couldn't sleep.

Something felt wrong.

Not just the attack. Not just the war.

Something deeper.

She slipped out of bed and moved quietly through the hallway. The house was dark, but she knew her way now.

As she passed Adrian's office, she noticed the door slightly open.

Light spilled through the gap.

She hesitated… then pushed it open.

Adrian wasn't there.

But his desk was covered in files.

Curiosity pulled her closer.

Names. Photos. Locations.

And then—

Her breath caught.

At the center of it all… was a picture.

Of her.

Lily froze.

Her name was written across the top of the file.

Not just her name… but details.

Things she had never told Adrian.

Her past. Her family. Things she thought were buried.

A cold chill ran down her spine.

"Looking for something?"

She spun around.

Adrian stood in the doorway.

Watching her.
