Chapter 52 - Chapter Fifty Two: Correcting Past Mistakes

Inside the opulent conference hall of their colossal corporate headquarters, where the fates of millions of dollars were sealed with the stroke of a pen, Jaguar presided over the executive table with his customary, commanding authority. As one of the senior directors continued presenting the strategic charts, Jaguar's personal phone vibrated, signaling an incoming call from his grandfather's private secretary.

Answering in a clipped, decisive tone, he received news that shattered his composure within seconds. The secretary reported in an elated voice that the patriarch was to be discharged from the hospital today, under an urgent and official release authorized by Dr. Fati.

Initially, a wave of relief and genuine joy for his grandfather's recovery swept through his chest. Yet, he was instantly blindsided by a harsher, more sobering reality that banished all peace from his mind. His grandfather's discharge meant the absolute demise of his only pretext for entering the hospital. Fati, with her sharp intellect, had calculated exactly how to revoke his passport into her universe; without the old man there, their encounters would dwindle to a scarce, near-impossible frequency, governed entirely by her cold rejection. How was he to see her now?! How could he reach her without being shut out?!

Seized by a hidden, emotional panic, he abruptly stood up in the center of the vast hall, severing the director's presentation with an iron authority. He commanded in a resounding, firm tone that pierced the silence of the room,

- Very well... proceed with the negotiations without me. An urgent emergency has arisen at the hospital; I must depart immediately.

Jaguar exited with long, tempestuous strides, leaving behind a flurry of hushed murmuring and bewildered glances among the astonished directors and executives, who assumed with absolute certainty that some grave misfortune had befallen the family's elderly patriarch. But Jaguar's thoughts at that precise moment were locked entirely on a single person... on Fati. He knew in the depths of his remorseful soul that he had to see her today; he had to hold her hands and speak to her, regardless of her pride and her newly built walls. Last night, with its tears, its agonizing weeping, and her violent self-punishment, had passed with the suffocating weight of mountains a toxic misunderstanding that could not be left to fester.

Two entire hours drifted by, stretching like an eternity of bitter anticipation. Jaguar stood with his customary iron stature amidst his personal security detail in front of the hospital's main entrance, while his grandfather remained anchored to a wheelchair due to the profound frailty of his body following his recent illness. The luxury vehicle sat idle before them, its engine whispering softly, yet Jaguar showed no inclination to move. He remained rigid, his face completely transfixed by the glass doors of the hospital, his phone tightly clutched in his palm as he dialed Fati's number repeatedly all in vain. His desperate urge to see her eclipsed even his relief at his grandfather's discharge; this was his final, solitary opportunity to confront her face-to-face today before their paths drifted apart. After the endless wait, fatigue seeped into the elderly man's bones. Incapable of enduring the chill outside, the grandfather slowly rose from his wheelchair, navigated toward the waiting vehicle, and slid inside. Casting a weary, reproving glance at his grandson, he murmured,

- Stop calling her, Jaguar... I will meet with her later once things have settled. It is fine, leave her be for now.

Meanwhile, the hours swept past Fati like a tempest of relentless labor; she surged between wards, operating theaters, and emergency rooms, consuming every ounce of her physical strength to deny her mind the luxury of dwelling on Jaguar or the dark shadows of the past. Yet, with every fleeting opportunity or brief respite, she retreated to her secluded office. Approaching the deformed woolen rabbit, she would gently cradle its tiny hand between her fingers, as if recharging her shattered soul with a divine dosage of security. A strange, sweet sensation overwhelmed her every time she touched those rough woolen stitches, as if her mother's living scent transcended time to intertwine with her fingers, assuring her that she was never truly alone.

When her long, grueling shift finally drew to a close, Fati paced with heavy strides toward her grandfather's private suite to check on him before departing, only to freeze at the threshold. The suite was entirely vacant, the bed meticulously made in a clinical fashion that announced his departure. She retrieved her phone from her white coat pocket, only to be blinded by dozens of missed calls from both Jaguar and her grandfather's private secretary. She pressed her palm against her mouth in stunned realization, only now discovering that, amidst the chaotic rush of the operating rooms and emergencies, she had subconsciously silenced her device unknowingly forfeiting her final chance to bid her grandfather farewell, and leaving Jaguar to swallow the bitter poison of her perceived, silent rejection all day.

Within the walls of that vacant medical suite, Fati stood in absolute solitude, casting her gaze toward the distant horizon through the expansive glass window. Tears glistened in her eyes as she petitioned the heavens in a pleading, whispered tone,

"Forgive me, mother... I was selfish, and I did not care for your father as I ought to have. I know with absolute certainty that I have been deeply negligent with him... Forgive me."

Lowering her head to stare at the bed, made up with a cold, empty precision, she forged a new vow that anchored itself in her soul

"But I will strive to make it up to you through him, grandfather... I swear from this day forward, I will be the granddaughter you always wished for."

On the other side of the city, within the luxurious corridors of the grand mansion, silence blanketed the halls upon the arrival of Jaguar and his grandfather. The elder navigated the space with heavy, strained strides, bypassing the servants and guards to walk directly toward the large oil painting depicting the features of his late daughter, Rosie. Standing before the portrait, the old man traced her painted eyes with weeping, living vision, whispering in a voice choked with darkness,

- My darling... I have finally found your daughter. She is beautiful... so incredibly beautiful, Rosie. I will bring her to you soon so you may meet, for she hasn't seen you since she was a mere infant.

At that precise micro-second, a brilliant idea flashed across Jaguar's mind a concept he seized like a drowning man clutching a lifeline in a tempest. It appeared to him that his grandfather was paving the way to draw Fati into the mansion, and he recognized in this a legitimate, flawless pretext to visit her tonight and persuade her to relocate and live beside her grandfather during this critical period. Stepping closer, he spoke with an eagerness he desperately tried to suppress,

- Grandfather... do not exhaust yourself. Let me be the one to bring Fati to you. I will go speak with her tonight so she can pack her belongings and move here to live with us.

Jaguar instantly raised his device to dial her number again, yet his grandfather's subsequent words fell upon him like a devastating thunderbolt, paralyzing his movements entirely. The elder turned slowly, profound bewilderment etching itself onto his weathered face, as he demanded in a sharp, incredulous tone,

- What do you mean, 'move here to live with us'?! I meant that I would take her to visit her late mother's grave so their spirits could commune there!... What do you mean by your words?! What?! Does Fati not live here in this mansion with you?! Has she not been established under your roof and your care all this time?

The blood ran cold in Jaguar's veins, and a violent shock seized his entire body, leaving him utterly speechless. It had never crossed his mind that he had neglected to inform his grandfather that Fati had not stepped foot inside this mansion since that ominous incident. He had blindly assumed that his grandfather, upon regaining consciousness, had requested a comprehensive brief from his private secretary regarding all details concerning Fati. But it seemed the elder had never questioned it because his faith in his grandson was absolute... he trusted that Jaguar's dignity and pride would never allow him to abandon the sacred trust of Rosie's daughter, believing she was securely established under his roof.

Under the piercing, disappointed gaze of his grandfather, Jaguar began to stammer, stripped of his usual commanding eloquence. It was a rare, unsettling spectacle; even the chief butler standing in the background watched in stunned disbelief, having never once in his life witnessed his formidable, unyielding master in such a vulnerable, fragile state.

Trying to gather his scattered words, Jaguar muttered in a strained, halting voice,

- The matter... the matter is highly complicated, grandfather... Fati has endured so much, and...

- Jaguar!

The grandfather interjected, his thunderous voice slicing through the silence of the opulent corridor as his patience shattered completely. It was a roar that vibrated through the ancient walls of the mansion as he demanded in a tone trembling with rage and disbelief,

- Did you expel your wife from this mansion?!

A suffocating, heavy, and shameful silence blanketed the hall. For the first time in his life, the Jaguar lowered his head to the floor in sheer humiliation and defeat, unable to meet the eyes of the man who had raised him. Swallowing his bitter remorse, he uttered a confession that tore his pride to shreds:

- Yes, grandfather... I expelled her... and she has never lived here.
