Chapter 55 - Chapter Fifty Five: Escaping into the Wrong Sanctuary

A strange, warm sensation of security swept through Fati, coursing through her veins like an antidote the exact second her face grazed the warmth of Jaguar's chest. It was a feeling that completely destabilized her defenses, yet she gathered the remnants of her composure, gently pushing herself away from his disorienting embrace. She stuttered in a hushed, flustered voice,

- No... this is not what I intended! I... I merely lost my footing and tripped, and...

His watchful presence did not permit her to conclude her apology. Instead, his fingertips gently settled over her lips, arresting her stammered words. He whispered in a tone saturated with tenderness and solicitude, staring deep into her weary eyes,

- It is fine... there is no need to justify anything. What matters is that you are safe.

Before she could process his words, Jaguar reined her back into his chest, enveloping her in a deeper, more resolute embrace. This time... Fati offered no resistance, nor did her frame stiffen in his arms. Her tempestuous rage toward him had completely dissolved, and she surrendered to his orbit. Within the depths of her tormented soul, she held the quiet conviction that the sin her father had committed against his family was far weightier, and that remaining alive within this man's embrace was the absolute maximum punishment she had feared he would inflict upon her as vengeance. She calculated with a broken, resigned heart: If the Jaguar's retribution and exacted justice amounted to nothing more than an embrace wrapping her in warmth... then so be it. She would endure it with every fiber of her being, and she would seek forgiveness from her late grandfather's spirit for this momentary vulnerability.

In the absolute depth of her strange surrender and solace within his arms, a flicker of guilt ignited within Fati's mind; she suddenly recalled her elder grandfather, whom she had failed to meet or console prior to her departure from the hospital. Her heart constricted, and she uttered in a muted, velvet whisper, her face still deeply buried against the contours of his chest, barely audible,

- My grandfather... I left the hospital without bidding him farewell...

Jaguar caught the thread of sorrow in her voice, recollecting in that precise micro-second the authentic catalyst that had impelled him to storm her apartment; he had intended to navigate the harsh reality of his grandfather's absolute mandate to dissolve their union. Yet, faced with the deluge of warmth enveloping them now, he resolved to weave a white lie, veiling the brutal truth to preserve her proximity. Projecting a calm facade, he asserted firmly,

- Yes... he is somewhat displeased with you because you departed without permitting him to see you.

Fati slowly withdrew her face from his chest, leaving the remainder of her frame clinging naturally against his waist a series of subconscious movements that bewitched his senses and completely unraveled his logic. She raised her sleepy eyes toward him.

, bestowing upon him a gaze of tender plea a look the Jaguar swore was her most lethal weapon against his heart. She uttered with soft remorse,

- Is he truly angry with me?! Oh God... I saddened him without intending any harm...

Jaguar tracked her anxious features, seizing the fleeting opportunity with the calculated cunning of a consumed lover unwilling to surrender his sovereign rights. Leaning toward her slightly while softly tangling his fingers through her hair, he proposed in a warm, low baritone,

- We can reconstruct everything and rectify this misstep... What do you think about moving into the mansion to reside with him?! He will be profoundly overjoyed, and his spirit will settle, knowing that a piece of his late daughter 'Rosie's' fragrance is fluttering around him in every corridor.

Fati let out a weary, timid sigh, burying her face once more into the contours of his chest to conceal her intense flustration and disjointed thoughts beneath his searching gaze. She murmured in a muted tone,

- I do not wish for him to remain tethered to the painful ghosts of the past because of me, Jaguar... I fear my presence will only reopen his wounds.

Jaguar wrapped his arms securely around her, tightening his grip to crush her frame lovingly against his ribs. He asserted in a decisive, resolute tone,

- No... you will do no such thing, Fati. Rather, you will be the reason he forgets everything he ever lost.

Leaning down, he pressed a warm, passion-laden kiss against her crown, taking a deep, shuddering breath to inhale the intoxicating fragrance of her damp hair that continuously bewitched his senses. He continued, processing with quiet internal exhilaration that the insurmountable walls between them were finally crumbling, rendering everything significantly easier than anticipated:

- Listen to me... when my father passed away years ago, I was the sole balm that healed his grief and permitted him to move forward in life... But his daughter 'Rosie's' departure left him with nothing to cling to. Thus, his sorrow over her was far too crushing and brutal to bear, and her loss was what truly shattered him so mercilessly.

Fati fell silent for a few heartbeats, digesting his warm baritone as she drifted into deep contemplation. She realized that this elderly grandfather had truly suffered immense loss, and she refused to be the catalyst for further agony inflicted upon her late mother's father through her constant rejection and stubbornness to draw near. Despite her anxieties regarding the grueling, long commutes between the hospital and the grand estate, she resolved to sacrifice and balance her grueling work shifts with moving there... for her grandfather was her most precious anchor now, the sole surviving bridge connecting her to her late mother, Rosie.

Slowly elevating her head, she locked her gaze with his in serene determination, uttering,

- Very well... I will do as you propose, Jaguar. I will transfer my belongings and move into the mansion... to remain beside my grandfather.

In the depths of his calculated mind, Jaguar knew that her acceptance to relocate to the mansion was not borne out of desire for him or forgiveness for his sins, but rather a noble sacrifice to ease and care for their grandfather. Yet, the Jaguar was profoundly content with this truce; all that truly mattered was having her beside him, anchored close within his reach, for he suffered a suffocating agony that robbed him of air whenever she drifted beyond his orbit. He envisioned her return to the grand estate as his golden gateway to slowly draw near, reconstructing the ruins between them until she became his wife and beloved in absolute reality not merely a name inscribed upon a marriage certificate shrouded in estrangement and falsehood.

Overcome by a surge of pure, unadulterated exhilaration that flooded his soul, he gently pushed her slightly back from his chest. His fingers extended, tenderly cupping her delicate chin as he uttered with a spontaneous warmth his heart had craved to release for long years:

- Thank you... thank you, Fati... my love

Before she could process his words, he leaned down and pressed a swift, warm kiss against her plush lips. The gesture was so lightning-fast and utterly unexpected that shock frozen the blood in Fati's veins. She recoiled a few simple centimeters from his face, her stunned, flustered gaze darting between his lips that had just claimed hers and his dark eyes burning with unrestrained devotion, illuminated only by the faint, romantic light filtering through the window from the streetlamps outside.

Jaguar studied her trembling lips and the clarity of her eyes in the gloom, unable to restrain himself any longer. A violent surge of desire swept through him, an irrepressible urge to submerge deeper into this warmth and kiss her with even greater intensity. In a micro-second where logic dissolved and souls took over, their frames collided and fused together in a long, lingering, and deep embrace, interwoven with intimate, passionate kisses... serving as a sweet, cascading river that quenched the searing thirst of long, painful years of separation, grief, and longing.

Fati stirred in the initial rays of dawn to discover herself submerged securely within Jaguar's arms, enveloped by the radiating warmth of his body beneath the duvet. The blood froze in her veins as an overwhelming bewilderment seized her mind: Wait... what transpired last night?! Did... did they finally consummate their marriage?! She cautiously peered beneath the covers with a trembling heart, only for the stark reality to confront her their boundaries had entirely collapsed, and what had occurred was an irreversible truth. Bitter despair constricted her heart as she whispered to herself in disbelief: Have you lost your mind, Fati?! You, who were contemplating flight and continuously demanding a divorce... how can you possibly sever ties now after what happened?! A heavy sense of bitter resignation blanketed her spirit; she had to accept her plight and coexist as man and wife, even as the ember of ancient vengeance and past sorrow continued to echo within her imagination like an unyielding storm.

Detecting his subtle shifting beside her, she immediately mastered her breath, feigning deep slumber. Jaguar opened his eyes, fixating his gaze upon the tranquility of her features for a prolonged interlude, his eyes brimming with devotion and utter contentment. He then leaned down, pressing a tender kiss against her brow, before quietly rising to head into the bathroom to shower.

Fati seized the fleeting opportunity instantly. Slipping like a shadow from beneath the sheets, she hastily donned the very first garments her hands snagged. She resolved with cautious discretion not to await a morning confrontation, choosing instead to shower and change within her private quarters at the hospital. Gathering additional attire into her bag, she exited, racing against time. Yet, right before crossing the building's main gate, she retrieved her phone and dispatched a dry, muted text message, completely devoid of sentiment, reading:

"Jaguar... upon the conclusion of my shift at eight o'clock tonight, will you send a car to transport me to the mansion?"
