Chapter 16 - Chapter 16 – A New War Begins

The mountains were quiet.

For the first time in months…

There were no horns.

No arrows.

No distant fires burning in the night.

Only wind.

Only silence.

Kaelan Var stood at the edge of the ridge where the final battle had ended.

Below him, the battlefield had already begun to disappear.

Snow covered the blood.

Ash faded into the earth.

As if the war itself had never existed.

Behind him, the soldiers moved slowly.

What remained of them.

Less than a hundred now.

Wounded.

Exhausted.

But alive.

Sergeant Dren approached, his steps heavier than before.

"…It's over," he said.

Kaelan didn't answer immediately.

His eyes remained on the distant mountains.

"No," he said finally.

"It's finished here."

Dren followed his gaze.

"Maroth's gone."

Kaelan nodded.

"Yes."

But his expression didn't change.

Because both of them understood—

Gone did not mean defeated.

A horn sounded behind them.

Not a war horn.

Different.

Clear.

Controlled.

Imperial.

Dren turned.

"…That's not ours."

Kaelan already knew.

"They've arrived."

From the southern pass—

An army emerged.

Not a patrol.

Not a small force.

Thousands of soldiers marching in perfect formation.

Armor shining under the pale light.

Banners raised high.

The Empire had finally come.

At the front rode a man clad in black and gold armor.

His presence alone silenced the entire valley.

Even the wind seemed to slow.

General Arcturus Vale.

Kaelan stepped forward.

The surviving soldiers behind him straightened instinctively.

Even in their broken state—

They stood.

The imperial army halted at a distance.

Then—

Arcturus rode forward alone.

He stopped just a few steps from Kaelan.

For a moment, neither spoke.

The silence carried weight.

Then Arcturus dismounted.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

His eyes moved across the battlefield.

The burned ground.

The broken fort.

The dead.

Then back to Kaelan.

"So," Arcturus said.

"This is what remains."

Kaelan didn't flinch.

"Yes."

The general studied him carefully.

Longer this time.

"You held the frontier."

It wasn't praise.

It was acknowledgment.

Kaelan replied simply.

"We survived."

Arcturus nodded once.

"That is often the same thing."

Behind him, officers whispered quietly.

Some impressed.

Some doubtful.

Some… wary.

Arcturus turned slightly.

"You were given two hundred men."

He looked back at Kaelan.

"You return with less than half."

Dren's jaw tightened.

But Kaelan answered calmly.

"We were attacked by an army."

Arcturus's gaze sharpened.

"And yet you stand."

Silence.

Then—

The general smiled faintly.

"Good."

He turned back toward his army.

Then spoke without looking at Kaelan.

"The frontier is no longer your concern."

Dren frowned.

"…What?"

Kaelan's expression remained still.

"What do you mean?"

Arcturus faced him again.

"The war has changed."

He gestured toward the south.

"Rebellion has spread beyond the mountains."

Another officer stepped forward, unrolling a map.

Large.

Detailed.

Covered in markings.

Red.

Everywhere.

"Three provinces have risen," the officer said.

"Supply lines destroyed. Cities under siege."

Dren let out a low whistle.

"That's not rebellion…"

Kaelan finished quietly.

"…That's war."

Arcturus nodded.

"Yes."

He stepped closer.

Close enough that only Kaelan could hear clearly.

"You've proven you can hold ground."

A pause.

"Now I need to see if you can take it."

Kaelan met his gaze.

No hesitation.

"Where?"

Arcturus pointed to a single mark on the map.

A city.

Far to the south.

"Velmora."

The name carried weight.

Even Dren reacted.

"…That place is already lost."

Arcturus didn't deny it.

"Exactly."

He folded his arms.

"Your new orders are simple."

Silence fell.

"Take it back."

The wind moved through the valley again.

But this time—

It carried something different.

Not the end of a war.

The beginning of a greater one.

Kaelan looked south.

Beyond the mountains.

Beyond the frontier.

Toward a battlefield far larger than anything he had known.

He felt it.

The shift.

From commander…

To something more.

Behind him, the surviving soldiers waited.

Watching.

Trusting.

Kaelan tightened his grip on his sword.

"Understood."

Arcturus nodded once.

Then turned away.

"Prepare your men."

The imperial army began to move again.

Like a machine.

Precise.

Unstoppable.

Dren stepped beside Kaelan.

"…We're really leaving the mountains."

Kaelan didn't look back.

"No."

His eyes remained fixed on the south.

"We're entering a new war."

The wind carried the last traces of ash into the sky.

The frontier was silent.

But far beyond it—

The empire was burning.

A new war has begun. Will Kaelan rise… or be crushed by it? ⚔️
