Chapter 140 - The Wedding Reception [Pt3]

The party was getting pretty lively when Phil and Luke slipped away.

Claire noticed Phil was gone almost right away.

She scanned the room, looking for her husband. That's when she saw a suspicious curtain being set up near the little stage at the other end of the hall.

Luke was behind it, wearing a black vest and struggling to get a bunch of colorful silk scarves untangled. Then, Phil popped out from behind the curtain, a magician's wand sticking out from behind his ear.

Claire shut her eyes.

"Oh, for the love of God," she mumbled, then walked over to them.

Phil saw her coming and threw his arms wide open. "Claire, you're here at the perfect moment! You're just in time for the most amazing trick ever at a wedding!"

Claire stood right in front of him. "You said you wouldn't turn this reception into your own magic show."

Phil nodded seriously. "And I haven't. This is a special performance, father and son."

Luke picked up a small box from a nearby table. "We've been practicing for two weeks, and most of the tricks actually work now."

Claire looked at him, surprised.

"Most of them?"

Luke looked over at Phil, seeming a little unsure.

Phil gave him a confident smile. "The really important tricks work perfectly."

Claire looked at the curtain, the stage lights, and a small black cabinet nearby. "Phil, please tell me there aren't any live animals in that thing."

Phil looked hurt. "Honey, relax. Have a little faith in your husband."

Jack and Haley walked over, both looking like they were having a good time.

Haley looked at the small stage and then at her dad. "Dad, what are you planning?"

Phil held up his wand. "A gift for the newlyweds! It will have amazing tricks, incredible skill, and a special tribute to your future kids."

Jack looked at the cabinet. "Is someone going to get cut in half?"

Luke shook his head. "We decided against that when Mom said we couldn't use the circular saw."

Claire slowly turned to her son.

Luke quickly added, "Which was the right choice, because safety is most important."

Jack started laughing.

Haley looked at Claire, who seemed to be rethinking some life choices.

"Mom, just let them do it," Haley said, putting an arm around Jack. "It's our wedding, and we want to see the magic show."

Phil's face lit up, as if he'd won an award.

Claire looked from her daughter to her husband, then pointed at the stage. "Ten minutes, Phil. And if anything catches fire, I'm stopping it myself."

Phil gave her a salute. "Yes, Commander Claire. Get ready to be amazed."

Five minutes later, the ballroom lights dimmed. Phil walked onto the stage wearing a black cape that Jack was pretty sure wasn't there earlier.

Luke stood next to him in his vest, holding cards.

"Ladies and gentlemen, honored guests, newlyweds, and anyone who wandered in from the parking lot," Phil announced into the microphone, "welcome to a fantastic celebration of love, family, and the magic that makes life special!"

Cam, sitting nearby, leaned over to Mitchell.

"He took that opening from my Christmas play," Cam whispered, sounding annoyed.

Mitchell patted his knee. "You don't own the idea of magic, honey."

Phil started with a card trick that actually worked well.

He asked Alex to come on stage, pick a card, and then somehow pulled it out of Luke's shoe.

Alex looked at the card for a few seconds, then examined the deck closely.

"There's a mathematical explanation for this," she said.

Phil smiled. "And there's a magic reason that makes tonight more fun."

The next trick was making a small silk scarf disappear. However, Luke accidentally showed the hidden spot while getting the next item.

Phil quickly changed what he was doing.

"Ladies and gentlemen, you've just seen the rare trick called 'revealing the illusion,' a clever move to make the audience less suspicious."

Matthew Perry laughed so hard that Woody had to steady his drink.

The next few tricks really went perfectly.

For the last trick, Phil asked Jack and Haley to come on stage.

He held up two white silk scarves, one in each hand.

"These stand for two people," Phil said, looking at the couple. "Two people with their own hopes, dreams, talents, and sometimes, different ideas about where the couch should go."

Haley immediately pointed at Jack. "That's actually a big problem in our house."

Phil nodded. "All good marriages involve tough furniture talks."

He put the scarves in a small velvet bag and asked Haley to wave his wand over it.

She did it with a big, dramatic move.

Phil opened the bag and reached inside.

Instead of scarves, he pulled out two tiny pairs of white baby socks, tied together with a light ribbon.

The room filled with happy clapping.

Haley looked at the little socks for a moment, then put her hand to her mouth.

Jack smiled at Phil, looking surprised.

Phil held the socks out to the couple.

"And sometimes," he said kindly, "when two people decide to share their lives, something even more amazing happens."

Haley took the socks carefully, holding them in her hand.

"They're so small," she said softly, looking at Jack.

Jack put his arm around her and smiled at Phil. "That was really lovely, Mr. Dunphy."

Phil blinked fast, trying not to cry again.

Then Luke walked up with his hands in the air.

"Okay, everyone, now watch us make Dad disappear!"

Before Phil could stop him, Luke pulled a rope that was attached to the stage curtain.

The curtain fell right over Phil's head.

For a second, it was totally quiet.

Then Phil's voice came from under the curtain, sounding muffled.

"Ladies and gentlemen, the trick is going great, even though the magician can't see right now!"

Jack bent over laughing.

Haley held onto his arm, careful not to drop the baby socks.

Jay shook his head from his table. "That kid has better timing than his dad."

Cam started clapping right away.

"Great job, Phil! You really committed to the physical comedy!"

Claire stood near the stage with her arms crossed, watching Luke try to get his dad unstuck.

She sighed and turned to Sarah. "You know, I really thought getting one child married would mean fewer problems for me."

Sarah smiled at the stage. "That's never going to happen."

...

The wedding cake made it through the magic show, which really relieved Sarah.

By the time Jack and Haley cut the first piece, the whole family was back around them. Everyone held up cameras and phones like they were watching something amazing.

Haley held the knife, and Jack put his hand over hers.

Cam was close by, telling them where to pose for the cake-cutting pictures.

"Jack, honey, could you move your elbow a bit to the left? We need a clear shot of the flowers."

Jack looked at Cam. "Cam, we've been taking pictures since noon."

Cam nodded, understanding. "I know, but the light right now is perfect."

Haley whispered to Jack, "Just smile, honey. If we do what he wants, maybe he'll stop asking."

Jack smiled for the camera as they cut the cake.

The pictures turned out great.

Feeding each other cake was a little messier.

Haley offered Jack a bite. She waited for him to lean in, then pulled the fork back a little so he had to follow it.

Jack looked at her with a playful glare.

"Haley, you're using your new wife powers too much."

She smiled sweetly. "I'm setting some important rules."

Jack finally got to eat the cake, but some frosting landed near his mouth.

When it was his turn, he held the fork carefully while Haley leaned in.

She watched him very closely.

"Jack, if you get frosting on this dress, your mom will literally bury you."

Sarah called out from behind them. "She's right, honey."

Jack laughed and fed Haley the cake without any mess.

Phil looked sad.

"I was hoping for some frosting drama," he said.

Claire took his arm. "That's because you still don't realize some moments can just be nice."
