[2:00 PM] [Dunphy House]
After shopping, they brought everything for Gloria's party into the garage.
Phil and Jack helped carry the boxes while Haley took the fabric and the other things she needed for Gloria's dress down to her basement room. Luke opened one of the bags and showed Phil the new magic items he'd asked him to buy.
Phil smiled. "You actually got everything." He picked up a handcuff and examined it closely.
Luke nodded. "Yeah, even the weird stuff."
Phil picked up one of the packages and looked genuinely excited. "Tomorrow is going to be magical, buddy." He opened another box. "Alright, time to practice."

Meanwhile in the living room...
After thinking about it for a while, Claire and Manny had agreed that trying to make a large birthday cake by the next afternoon was asking for trouble. There wasn't enough time to bake it, decorate it properly, and still handle everything else, so they decided to order one instead.
Claire sat on the couch with Manny beside her while his laptop rested open on the coffee table. They had been looking through the bakery website, and what Claire had expected to be the easiest part of Gloria's birthday preparations had somehow become another decision that required serious discussion.
Manny scrolled through several more designs before stopping on a three-layer chocolate cake decorated with white flowers and thin curls of chocolate.
"What do you think about this one?" Manny asked.
Claire leaned forward and studied the picture for a few seconds. "It's nice, although I think Gloria would want more color."
"I was thinking the same thing."
Manny continued scrolling...
A few seconds later, he stopped again.
"This one has chocolate cake, raspberry filling, dark chocolate ganache, and strawberries."
Claire looked over. The cake was tall without being ridiculous, with berries arranged around the top and a small collection of red and white flowers around the bottom.
"That could work."
Manny enlarged the picture. "Mom loves chocolate, and the red matches most of the decorations we already bought."
"Exactly. It looks like something she'd actually choose for herself."
Manny considered it for another moment before nodding. "I think she'll like it."
"Well, get it."
Manny opened the ordering page and began filling everything out while Claire checked the available sizes. When he reached the decoration section, he selected the birthday option and typed Gloria's name into the message box.
Claire pointed toward the serving information. "Get the larger one."
Manny looked at the number of servings. "That seems like a lot of cake."
"You haven't seen Cameron around birthday cake."
Manny thought about that before changing the size without arguing.
Claire went through the order once more, checking the pickup time, cake flavor, filling, and message before Manny submitted it. A confirmation page appeared a few seconds later showing that the cake would be ready the following afternoon.
Manny wrote the bakery information into the notebook he had been using to organize the party. "Cake is handled."
"Good. What's still left?"
Manny looked down the page. "Food is mostly finished. Decorations are in the garage, Haley has everything for the dress, and Luke and Phil are working on the magic show."
As if summoned by the mention of them, Phil's excited voice carried through the house from the garage.
"Luke, you can't panic when the handcuffs go on. Panic is how Houdini probably started."

[Meanwhile, in the Basement]
Haley stood in front of the full-length mirror, turning slightly from side to side while checking the fit of the blue dress she had changed into after bringing the fabric downstairs. The dress hugged her waist cleanly before falling just above her knees, and she was studying the neckline when Jack walked up behind her and wrapped both arms around her waist.
His chin rested near her shoulder as he looked at their reflection before leaning closer and kissing the side of her neck.
Haley smiled immediately, though she tried to keep her attention on the fabric samples spread across the nearby table. "You do know that I have actual work to finish, and if you keep seducing me like this, Gloria's birthday dress might never get made."
Jack kissed her neck once more while his arms stayed comfortably around her waist. "I'm willing to accept some responsibility for that risk."
Haley met his eyes through the mirror and gave him an amused look. "You're supposed to be helping with the party, boyfriend."
"I am helping, girlfriend, although I also have something else planned for you."
Her eyebrows lifted with immediate curiosity, but before she could turn around, Jack loosened one arm and reached inside his jacket.
"Close your eyes for me," Jack whispered near her ear.
Haley's smile widened as she let her eyes fall shut without asking what he was planning. Considering the way he had been kissing her neck, several possibilities crossed her mind, and very few of them involved birthday decorations.
Jack quietly pulled a small velvet box from the inside pocket of his jacket and opened it. Resting inside was a delicate diamond necklace with a thin white-gold chain and a small arrangement of diamonds at the center, elegant enough to catch the light without looking oversized.
He carefully lifted it from the box and brought the chain around Haley's neck.
Haley felt the cool metal settle against her skin while Jack fastened the clasp behind her. His fingers brushed lightly across the back of her neck before he leaned forward and gave her another playful kiss beneath her ear.
"Open your eyes," Jack said while watching her reflection.
Haley opened them slowly. Her gaze dropped toward the mirror, and the moment she saw the necklace resting against the blue dress, every thought seemed to leave her face at once.
Her lips parted as she stared at the diamonds catching the light.
For several seconds, Haley didn't move. Then her fingers rose carefully toward the necklace, touching the center as though she needed to make sure it was actually there.
"Oh my God, Jack."
Jack smiled behind her, still watching her through the mirror. "Do you like it?"
Haley turned around so quickly that his hands slipped from her waist. She looked down at the necklace again, then back at him with wide eyes and a growing smile that she couldn't hide.
"Are you kidding me? I love it."
Before Jack could say anything else, Haley threw both arms around his neck and hugged him tightly. Jack laughed softly as he caught her around the waist, and she immediately kissed him with enough enthusiasm to make him take half a step backward.
When she finally pulled away, her hands stayed around his neck while she looked at him with the kind of happiness that made her eyes shine.
"I saw it while we were shopping, and I thought it would look beautiful on you," He said.
Haley glanced toward the mirror again, still smiling. "You disappeared because you were buying me a diamond necklace?" She looked back at him.
"I also made the phone call I said I was making, so technically I only hid part of the truth." He shrugged.
Haley laughed and lightly smacked his chest. "You sneaky hot liar."
Jack caught her hand before she could pull it away and kissed her fingers. "I wanted it to be a surprise."
"Well, congratulations, because I had absolutely no idea."
Haley turned back again and stepped closer to the mirror and turned her head slightly, admiring the way the diamonds rested against the neckline of her dress. Her smile grew even wider as she lightly ran her fingertips over them.
"It's so pretty."
Jack moved behind her again and slid his arms around her waist. "I knew it would look better on you."
Haley looked at his reflection and immediately gave him a soft, affectionate smile. "You really know how to make a girl feel special."
They talked for a moment before Jack decided it was time to leave because if he stayed there any longer, they would definitely end up having sex.
"Well, I won't disturb you today. So, see you tomorrow," Jack said before kissing her.
"See you tomorrow," Haley said, kissing him back.
Jack left the Dunphy house after saying goodbye.
On the way, he decided to stop by the cafe again to grab some cookies and a slushy. Since he had nothing else planned tonight, he wanted to just laze around by the pool and enjoy some music.

[Cafe]
Sheldon and Amy walked into Bruester Café for the second time that day, looking considerably less optimistic than they had that morning.
Their search for Jack Preston had taken them from the café to Westfield Mall, where they arrived several minutes after Jack, Haley, Manny, and Luke had already moved deeper inside the building. A new fan photograph sent them toward a magic shop, where Sheldon spent eleven minutes questioning an employee who remembered seeing Luke but couldn't identify anyone else in the group. Another post eventually led them toward Preston Boutique, where an increasingly uncomfortable sales associate informed Sheldon that Haley had already collected fabric and left.
Several hours of crowdsourced location intelligence had produced absolutely nothing except sore feet, wasted gasoline, and a growing desire from Amy to throw Sheldon's phone into the nearest storm drain.
Now they had somehow returned exactly where they started.
The employee behind the café counter noticed them immediately and slowly narrowed her eyes.
She had been wiping down the espresso machine when Sheldon and Amy entered, but the cloth stopped moving the moment she recognized Sheldon's face.
"You two again?" she asked while staring directly at Sheldon.
Amy raised both hands in a calming gesture as they approached the counter. "Please don't call the police because we're actually ordering something this time."
The employee looked toward Sheldon suspiciously before glancing back at Amy. "That's probably a good idea."
Sheldon stood beside Amy with his arms folded tightly across his chest, his entire posture broadcasting irritation. "I fail to see the point of purchasing refreshments from an establishment that has already demonstrated such poor celebrity-location retention."
Amy gave him a sideways look while reaching for one of the laminated menus. "The point is that I've been driving you around Los Angeles for several hours, my feet hurt, I'm hungry, and I'd like to spend twenty minutes somewhere without chasing an actor through retail establishments."
Sheldon frowned and glanced toward the empty outdoor table where Jack had been sitting earlier that morning. "We were approximately forty-five minutes behind him here, fifteen minutes behind him at the mall, twenty-three minutes behind him at the magic shop, and apparently less than ten minutes behind Haley Dunphy at Preston Boutique. Statistically, we're improving."
Amy continued studying the menu while refusing to encourage him. "Statistically, we've spent most of the day stalking somebody who doesn't know we're looking for him."
Sheldon adjusted the strap of his messenger bag and looked offended by the terminology. "I've already explained that stalking implies obsessive pursuit without legitimate purpose, whereas I require information regarding a substantially delayed fantasy novel."
The employee looked between them before quietly reaching toward the phone beside the register.
Amy noticed the movement and immediately stepped closer to the counter. "We're ordering, and nobody needs law enforcement involvement."
The employee slowly moved her hand away from the phone. "Then I'd recommend deciding what you want."
Amy lowered her attention toward the drink section and began scanning the specials while Sheldon continued muttering beside her about publishing schedules, professional accountability, and the disturbing decline of customer service.
Then Amy suddenly stopped reading.
Her eyes widened slightly.
She leaned closer toward the menu as though she had discovered something Sheldon enjoys.
Under the café's special drink section, written beneath several flavored coffees and seasonal milkshakes, were two words that immediately changed the direction of her afternoon.
Strawberry Quik.
Amy slowly turned toward Sheldon.
He was still glaring toward the outdoor tables while complaining under his breath. "If Jack Preston had simply honored the original May publication date, none of this would've been necessary."
Amy smiled faintly. "Sheldon, they have Strawberry Quik."
His head turned immediately.
The transformation was subtle but unmistakable. His shoulders loosened, his frown weakened, and his attention moved toward the menu with the speed of a laboratory animal recognizing a familiar reward stimulus.
"Where?" Sheldon asked while stepping closer.
Amy pointed toward the specials section. "Right there under the flavored milk drinks."
Sheldon leaned toward the menu and read the listing twice, apparently confirming that Amy hadn't attempted an emotional manipulation through fraudulent strawberry beverage advertising.
His irritation decreased another measurable amount.
Strawberry Quik occupied a special place within Sheldon's narrow collection of acceptable beverages. Among pink fluids, it held first place, narrowly defeating Pepto-Bismol despite the latter's undeniable gastrointestinal usefulness.
Sheldon approached the counter with renewed purpose. "I'll have one Strawberry Quik, assuming your preparation process meets the appropriate standard."
The employee stared at him for several seconds. "It's strawberry milk."
Sheldon raised one finger with immediate seriousness. "That description ignores an extremely important distinction because Strawberry Quik exists in both powdered and syrup formulations."
Amy rested one elbow against the counter and quietly watched the disaster develop.
The employee glanced toward the drink station behind her. "We use syrup."
Sheldon looked genuinely wounded. "Then your menu is misleading."
The employee's expression hardened. "It says Strawberry Quik."
"Precisely, which creates the reasonable expectation of powdered Nesquik mixed directly into cold milk," Sheldon explained while gesturing toward an imaginary glass. "The powder requires proper stirring, creates a characteristic concentration gradient during initial mixing, and leaves a small but acceptable amount of residue near the bottom."
The employee folded her arms. "The syrup tastes basically the same."
Sheldon's eyes widened with immediate disbelief. "That's demonstrably false. The syrup tastes better, and I don't like it!"
Just then, the door opened with a little chime. Jack entered and waved his hand at the girl at the counter. He's a regular there. "Hey, Alice. Pack me a box of cashew cookies, a box of regular butter cookies, and a blue lagoon, slushy version. Oh, and two walnut brownies."
Sheldon and Amy turned back, hearing the familiar voice.
"Jack Preston!" Sheldon said. He finally found his target.
'Ahh, crap!' Jack thought in his head, but kept his usual expression.
