Chapter 115 - Gloria's Birthday Party

The sound of Jay's car pulling into the driveway made everyone inside the house run into their position.

Manny hurried into the living room and looked around at everyone. "They're here. Everybody get into position, and please remember that Mom's coming through the front door, so don't accidentally fire anything directly into her face."

Luke lowered his confetti popper slightly. "That feels like something you should've told earlier."

Phil reached over and pointed Luke's popper toward the ceiling. "Birthday magic goes upward, buddy. Lawsuits go sideways."

Claire hurried from the kitchen after checking the cake one final time. The three-layer chocolate cake stood in the middle of the dining table, surrounded by flowers, candles, and several wrapped gifts. Haley slipped behind the couch with Jack while Alex carried her cello toward the corner. Cam crouched beside the drum set, Mitchell held Lily near the hallway, and everyone went quiet as a key entered the front door.

Jay pushed the door open and allowed Gloria to walk inside first. "I still don't understand why the house is completely dark."

Gloria reached toward the light switch with a suspicious expression. "Maybe Manny is sleeping. He stayed awake very late last night doing something with that little book."

The lights came on.

Luke and Manny fired their confetti poppers at almost exactly the same moment.

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY!"

Gloria screamed as colorful paper exploded through the room. She jumped backward into Jay, who caught her shoulders while confetti drifted into his hair and across his jacket.

"Oh, my God!" Gloria shouted, pressing both hands against her chest as she stared around the transformed room. "You scared me!"

Manny rushed toward her with a huge smile. "Happy birthday, Mom."

Gloria's expression changed instantly as she looked past him at the decorations, flowers, balloons, photographs, and enormous cake waiting in the center of the room. Her eyes moved across the family gathered around her until they settled on Manny again.

"You did all of this?"

Manny nodded proudly as Gloria pulled him into a tight hug. "We all did it. You like it?"

Gloria kissed both of his cheeks before squeezing him even harder. "Ay, Manny. My beautiful boy. I love it."

Luke leaned toward Phil and whispered while watching them, "Do you think she's gonna hug everyone that hard?"

Phil was stunned for a moment. He really wanted a tight hug from Gloria as usual. "If we're lucky."

Gloria heard him and immediately opened one arm toward Phil. "Come here, Phil!"

Phil's smile disappeared beneath sudden concern. "I was kidding about the hard part."

Gloria grabbed him anyway and pulled him into a hug that left Phil happy and laughing nervously as his eyes went toward Claire. Claire gave him a look that said too many things before she stepped forward to wish her a happy birthday. Gloria hugged Claire next, then Alex and Haley, before Mitchell arrived carrying Lily.

Lily looked at Gloria's cake and pointed toward it. "Can I have some?"

Mitchell shifted her higher against his hip. "First we say happy birthday to Gloria."

Lily looked toward Gloria and smiled. "Happy birthday. Can I have cake now?"

"Lily, have a little patience," Mitchell said.

Gloria laughed and kissed Lily's forehead. "Yes, my beautiful little princess, you can have as much cake as you want."

Mitchell gave Gloria a warning look while lowering Lily to the floor. "Please don't tell a four-year-old she can have unlimited chocolate cake. Cam already does enough damage."

Cam stepped forward with his arms open. "I believe birthdays are the one day when calories should recognize personal boundaries and stay out of family business."

Gloria said, "Thank you, Cam."

Jay watched the greetings with his hands in his pockets until Gloria finally turned toward him. "And you knew about all of this?"

Jay shrugged with the smallest hint of satisfaction. "I had one job. Keep you away until four."

Gloria narrowed her eyes as everything from their day suddenly made sense. "That is why you let the woman at the spa massage you."

Jay glanced toward Manny. "We're never discussing that again."

Manny smiled innocently. "You seemed much more relaxed."

Jay pointed at him. "Especially with you."

Gloria laughed before wrapping both arms around Jay's neck and kissing him. "Thank you for letting them surprise me."

Jay rested one hand against her waist and glanced around at the decorations. "The kid put a lot of work into it. I figured I'd stay out of his way."

Jack waited until Gloria finished greeting the family before walking over with a wrapped present in his hand. "Happy birthday, Gloria," He said before giving the gift to her.

Gloria smiled brightly as she took the gift. "Thank you, Jack."

Just then, Haley rushed over to her, grabbed her arm, and dragged her upstairs. "Let's go, let's go. I have a big surprise for you."

....

[Upstairs] [Bedroom]

Haley hurried Gloria into the bedroom and closed the door behind them before anyone downstairs could follow. Gloria barely had time to ask what was happening before Haley moved toward the garment bag hanging from the wardrobe.

"Okay, before you say anything, I made this myself," Haley said as she reached for the zipper. "And when I say myself, I mean I actually designed it, cut the fabric, stitched it, redid the sleeves twice, nearly cried over the zipper, and stayed awake until four in the morning because one side kept looking weird."

Gloria stared at her with growing curiosity. "Haley, what did you do?"

Haley smiled nervously and pulled the zipper down.

Inside was a deep red dress with a fitted waist, soft draping around the neckline, and subtle gold detailing worked carefully along the edges. The fabric caught the bedroom light without becoming overly shiny, and the shape was elegant enough for Gloria while still carrying the dramatic confidence Haley knew she loved.

For several seconds, Gloria said nothing.

Haley's confidence immediately began collapsing.

"You hate it," Haley said as her smile disappeared. "Okay, I knew the gold might be too much. I was debating whether to use less, and then I thought, Gloria likes glamorous things, and now I'm realizing glamorous might've turned into expensive Christmas curtain."

Gloria finally looked at her. "Haley."

"Or maybe the neckline is wrong because I changed that at two in the morning, which is apparently when people should never make permanent fashion decisions."

"Haley."

"And I kept thinking about your skin tone and how red always looks amazing on you, but maybe this red is too dark, and I bought backup fabric if you want me to remake the entire thing."

Gloria crossed the room and pulled Haley into a hug before the next anxious sentence could escape.

Haley froze for half a second before wrapping her arms around Gloria.

"This is beautiful," Gloria said while holding her tightly. "You made this for me with your own hands?"

Haley nodded against her shoulder. "Uh-huh. I made it."

Gloria slowly stepped back and looked at the dress again. Her eyes had started shining, and she touched the fabric carefully with both hands as though she was afraid of disturbing the work.

"You stayed awake all night making this for me?"

Haley shrugged with a small smile. "Most of the night. There was also coffee."

Gloria laughed softly through the emotion gathering in her face. "Ay, Haley, this means so much to me."

After that, Haley removed the dress from the garment bag and helped her change into it, carefully guiding the fabric over her shoulders before closing the zipper she had spent so many hours fighting.

Once everything sat properly, Haley stepped backward.

Her mouth slowly opened.

"Oh, wow."

Gloria turned toward the mirror.

The dress fit beautifully.

The deep red color worked against her skin exactly the way Haley had imagined. The fitted waist gave the silhouette structure, while the softer fabric around the lower half moved naturally whenever Gloria turned. The gold detailing caught the light in small flashes without overpowering the design.

Gloria placed both hands near her waist and studied herself from one side, then the other.

"You look really beautiful, Gloria," Haley said.

Gloria looked back at her through the mirror. "You have talent, Haley."

The words affected Haley more than she expected.

She'd spent years hearing jokes about being irresponsible, shallow, distracted, and unlikely to finish anything difficult. Over the last few years, she had started proving people wrong, though some part of her still waited for someone to remind her who she used to be.

Hearing Gloria say it so simply made Haley's chest tighten.

"Thank you," Haley said while trying to sound casual. "That actually means a lot."

Gloria turned and kissed her cheek. "You should be proud of yourself."

Haley smiled before straightening the gold detail near Gloria's shoulder. "Okay, enough emotional stuff. We have an entire family downstairs waiting to lose their minds when you walk in."

A few minutes later, they reached the staircase.

Conversation downstairs faded almost immediately when Gloria appeared at the top.

Jack noticed Haley's nervous expression first, then looked toward Gloria and smiled broadly. Alex also looked impressed. Claire stopped arranging plates. Even Jay seemed caught off guard for a moment.

Gloria descended slowly while one hand rested on the railing.

Phil's mouth fell open. "Wow, Gloria, you look incredible."

'Showoff. But... She looks beautiful. Alright, I wonder if Haley will make a dress for me on my birthday?' Claire smiled with genuine admiration as Gloria reached the bottom step. "That dress is gorgeous."

Cam placed one hand over his chest. "That color is everything. Haley, you made that?"

Haley folded her arms with a proud smile. "Every single stitch."

Mitchell looked over the design and nodded approvingly. "Okay, I'm impressed. That actually looks professionally made."

Haley turned toward him. "You sound surprised."

Mitchell immediately corrected himself. "I'm impressed in a supportive family way that won't create another argument."

Jack walked closer and studied the dress while Gloria slowly turned once for everyone.

"This looks amazing," Jack said as he glanced at Haley. "You really nailed the fit."

Haley's smile softened as she looked at him. "Thank you."

Jay looked Gloria over with an appreciative grin that he didn't bother hiding. "Kid, you did good. Really good," He said, glancing toward Haley.

Haley's eyebrows lifted because praise from Jay rarely came without some kind of teasing attached.

Gloria walked over to Jay and placed one hand against his chest. "You like it?"

Jay nodded while looking at her. "I like the dress. I like what's in the dress even more."

Claire immediately looked away. "Dad."

Gloria laughed and kissed Jay's cheek while Haley covered her ears dramatically. "Okay, absolutely nobody asked for that review."

Manny stepped into the middle of the room and clapped his hands. "Now that Mom has her dress, we're moving to cake before certain people start eating the decorations."

Everyone looked toward Luke.

Luke was already chewing something.

He slowly lowered his hand. "It was one strawberry."

The cake drew everyone toward the dining room.

Gloria stared at the three-layer chocolate creation with obvious delight while Manny explained the chocolate sponge, raspberry filling, dark chocolate ganache, and strawberries. Candles had been arranged across the top, though Manny had wisely chosen a single candle that represented the occasion symbolically rather than mathematically.

Jay leaned toward him. "Smart move with the candles."

Manny nodded. "I enjoy living."

Everyone gathered around while Manny lit them.

They sang loudly and badly, with Cam adding unnecessary harmony and Phil attempting a second vocal line that collided with Mitchell's. Gloria laughed through most of the song before closing her eyes for several seconds and making a wish.

She blew out the candles in one breath.

The room erupted into applause.

Lily immediately pointed toward the cake. "Now can we eat it?"

Mitchell sighed. "Yes, now we can eat it."

Claire started cutting slices while Gloria received the first one. Cam somehow ended up with a piece nearly twice the size of everybody else's and sat on the couch attacking it with enthusiastic concentration.

A moment later, Lily wandered over and stared at his plate.

Cam looked down at her. "Would you like a bite, sweetheart?"

Lily shook her head while continuing to study the enormous slice. "No. I just wanted to see where the rest of the cake went."

Mitchell choked on his drink.

Claire burst out laughing.

Cam slowly looked at his plate and then at Lily. "This is a perfectly reasonable birthday portion."

Lily walked away without responding, which somehow made everyone laugh even harder.

Once cake had been mostly consumed, Phil jumped to his feet and clapped his hands dramatically. "Ladies, gentlemen, and people who just publicly judged my brother-in-law's dessert choices, it's time for magic." He announced.

Luke rolled a small table into the center of the living room while wearing a black vest and holding a deck of cards.

Jay leaned toward Gloria. "This was Manny's compromise."

Gloria whispered back, "What was the other option?"

Jay watched Phil flourish a silk handkerchief. "Unsupervised Phil."

Gloria nodded immediately. "This is safer."

Phil's show began with cards, disappearing coins, and a rope trick that failed during rehearsal but somehow worked perfectly during the actual performance. Luke handled the props surprisingly well, though he almost revealed the method behind one illusion when he reached for the wrong box.

Phil caught his wrist just in time and turned the mistake into a dramatic flourish.

After the magic table was cleared away, Alex carried her cello into position.

Jack sat on a chair with the acoustic guitar across his lap while Cam settled behind the drums. The room quieted as Gloria took her seat beside Jay.

Jack looked toward Alex.

She nodded.

He played the opening chords.

The song had been chosen for Gloria, something warm and affectionate rather than overly dramatic. Jack kept the rhythm simple while Alex's cello filled the room with a deeper melody. Cam joined several measures later, playing softly enough that everyone looked surprised.

For once, he wasn't trying to dominate the arrangement.

Gloria watched them with a bright smile.

Manny sat on the couch while Lily leaned against Mitchell's leg. Claire stood beside Phil, and Haley was watching Jack play with obvious affection. Luke was munching on nachos.

The final section arrived smoothly.

Alex held the last cello note while Jack let the final chord ring.

For half a second, silence filled the room.

Then Cam raised his drumsticks and started playing a solo for another fifteen minutes. Every time they thought it was about to end, Cam just kept playing. When he finished, everyone sighed in relief. But then came Manny with his big poem that lasted for another fifteen minutes, making everyone exhausted.

Gloria rose from her chair and applauded while tears gathered in her eyes. She looked around at her family, the decorations, the cake, the gifts, Haley's handmade dress, Phil and Luke's ridiculous magic show, and the instruments still resting around the living room.

Manny stepped toward her.

"So, did we do okay?"

Gloria pulled him into her arms.

"You made me feel like the luckiest woman in the world, papi."

Manny smiled against her shoulder.
