Chapter 2 - The Science of Survival

The first rays of dawn did not break through the forest canopy so much as they dissolved the night.

Mist hung low between the ancient trees, glowing faintly as pale sunlight filtered through layers of leaves and twisted branches. The forest floor was damp, rich with the scent of wet soil, moss, and growing things.

Jonas woke slowly.

Not to an alarm.

Not to traffic outside a city apartment window.

But to the sharp, involuntary twitch of his ears.

He lay still inside the shallow cave beneath the banyan tree, his cream-colored tail curled instinctively around his body. His senses were far sharper than they had been in his previous life, and that unfamiliar sensitivity had been waking him up repeatedly through the night.

Now those heightened senses screamed one clear message.

Something was outside.

A dull, rhythmic sound echoed from the cave entrance.

Thump.

Scuff.

Thump.

Jonas' eyes snapped open.

His heart began hammering instantly, beating against his ribs like a trapped bird.

In the corner of his vision, a familiar blue glow flickered into existence.

The system interface materialized.

[WARNING: PROXIMITY ALERT]

IDENTIFIED: Spotted Razor-Boar (Juvenile)

THREAT LEVEL: Low–Medium

ADVICE: Host is physically outmatched. Utilize terrain or botanical deterrents.

Jonas swallowed.

Physically outmatched.

That was a polite way of saying he would probably lose.

He tightened his grip on the crude stone knife resting beside him. The weapon felt embarrassingly primitive compared to the equipment he had once used in research expeditions.

But this wasn't Earth.

And he wasn't the same man anymore.

In his previous life, Jonas had been a botanist—someone who studied plants, ecosystems, soil chemistry. His greatest dangers had been dehydration in remote jungles or the occasional territorial animal that could be deterred with proper tools.

Here?

He was a ninety-pound feline humanoid with furred hands and the muscle density of a moderately athletic housecat.

Not ideal survival conditions.

The thump-scuff noise grew louder.

Jonas slowly turned his head toward the cave entrance.

Through the hanging roots of the banyan tree, he saw it.

The Razor-Boar stepped into view.

It was the size of a large dog, its body covered in coarse, wire-like fur patterned with dark spots. Its snout glistened wetly as it sniffed the air, and two jagged ivory tusks curved upward from its lower jaw.

Those tusks looked more than capable of opening his abdomen like a zipper.

The boar snorted.

Its nose twitched.

Jonas immediately understood the problem.

The Root-Stars.

He had eaten several of the strange tubers the night before. Their earthy smell must still linger around the cave.

The animal had followed the scent.

Jonas forced himself to breathe slowly.

Think.

You're a botanist.

Use your brain.

His gaze darted toward the banyan roots framing the cave entrance.

There.

The crimson vines.

Blood-Thorn Vines.

He had examined them the previous day. The system had identified their sap as highly corrosive.

Jonas leaned slightly closer to the interface floating beside him.

"System," he whispered quietly, "if I cut the vine, will the sap spray… or drip?"

The interface flickered.

[ANALYSIS COMPLETE]

Blood-Thorn sap is pressurized within the xylem structure.

Severing the main vein will result in a localized spray radius of approximately 1.5 meters.

Jonas' pulse quickened.

Perfect.

The boar suddenly squealed.

The sound was unpleasant—like metal grinding against metal.

Then it charged.

Jonas moved.

Instead of retreating deeper into the cave where he would be trapped, he burst forward.

His body moved faster than he expected.

Feline reflexes.

A sudden, powerful spring launched him over a protruding root.

The boar thundered past him.

Jonas grabbed the stone knife with both hands and slashed upward.

The blade struck the vine.

CRACK.

The plant split open.

Instantly, thick crimson sap sprayed outward in a violent arc.

The liquid hissed when it struck the forest floor.

One droplet landed directly on the boar's flank.

The reaction was immediate.

Smoke erupted from its hide.

The creature shrieked—a horrifying, metallic sound—and began thrashing wildly as the corrosive sap ate through its fur and skin.

Terrified and in agony, the Razor-Boar veered sideways and crashed into the underbrush, fleeing blindly into the forest.

Within seconds, the sounds of its retreat faded.

Silence returned.

Jonas collapsed against the banyan trunk.

His chest rose and fell in ragged gasps.

His hands trembled violently, and the stone knife nearly slipped from his grasp.

Moments later, the system interface reappeared.

[XP GAINED: 50 — Enemy Deterred]

CURRENT XP: 150 / 1000

COMMENTARY: Efficient environmental hazard usage detected.

Host survival probability increased by 0.04%.

Jonas wiped sweat from his brow.

"Zero-point-zero-four?" he wheezed.

"That's… discouraging."

The system did not respond.

Apparently sarcasm was not part of its operating parameters.

Once his breathing stabilized, Jonas forced himself to think rationally.

The boar encounter had revealed something important.

The forest was dangerous.

And hiding inside a cave would not solve that problem.

If anything, it would only delay the inevitable.

Survival required resources.

He needed protein.

He needed clean water.

And more importantly—

He needed to strengthen his body.

His current physical condition was unacceptable.

"System," Jonas said, "scan for plants with vitality or blood-strengthening properties."

The interface pulsed.

[SCANNING…]

Search radius extended to 500 meters.

Energy cost: 1.0 unit

Warning: Host energy reserves low.

A few seconds passed.

Then the system chimed again.

MATCH FOUND

Silver-Heart Ginseng

Description: Rare medicinal herb capable of absorbing primal energy from surrounding soil.

Effects: Repairs damaged meridians, increases bone density, improves vitality.

Location: Sunken Basin — 400 meters South

Warning: High predator density detected.

Jonas stared at the message.

Then he sighed.

"Of course there is."

Powerful medicine.

Dangerous location.

Classic fantasy logic.

Still…

He touched the thin muscles of his arm.

If he stayed this weak, every animal in the forest would view him as an easy meal.

Risk was unavoidable.

So he prepared.

He sharpened his stone knife using a flat whetstone beside the stream.

He filled his leather waterskin.

Then he gathered several handfuls of small glowing berries the system had identified earlier.

Lumina-Berries.

Mildly toxic.

Weak paralytic properties.

He crushed them into a thick paste.

Carefully, he smeared the paste along the edge of his knife.

Then he coated several sharpened wooden stakes he had carved.

The poison wouldn't kill anything large.

But it might slow something down.

And sometimes slowing an enemy was enough.

The forest changed as Jonas traveled south.

The trees grew closer together.

Massive trunks twisted toward the sky, their bark covered in thick curtains of moss that hung like damp green cloth.

The sound became strangely muted.

Even the wind seemed hesitant to move through this part of the forest.

Jonas' ears flicked nervously.

His instincts told him this place was wrong.

Then the system flashed.

Amber.

[CAUTION: ABNORMAL ENERGY SIGNATURE DETECTED]

TYPE: Reptilian / Draconic

THREAT LEVEL: ERROR — Data insufficient

Jonas froze.

Slowly, he crouched behind a cluster of pale ferns.

Ahead of him, the ground sloped downward into a mist-filled basin.

And at the center of that basin—

Something enormous rested on the ground.

A serpent.

But calling it a serpent felt insufficient.

The creature was thick as an ancient oak tree.

Its obsidian scales shimmered faintly in the filtered sunlight.

The massive body lay coiled around a jagged rock formation.

But what truly caught Jonas' attention were the wounds.

Deep gashes tore through the creature's scales.

From those wounds leaked a faint purple glow.

Corruption.

Infection.

Something unnatural.

Jonas swallowed.

"Is that… him?"

"The Villainous Great Black Serpent?"

The system responded instantly.

NAME: Kaelith

STATUS: Cursed

Condition: Critical — Unconscious

Cause:

Miasma Poisoning

Elemental Lacerations

Recommendation:

The host may eliminate target to prevent future threat.

Jonas stared at the creature.

Yes.

This was clearly a dangerous being.

Perhaps even the antagonist of whatever narrative the system was referencing.

But as a scientist, Jonas saw something else.

He saw injuries.

Rotting flesh.

Poison spreads through tissue.

"That's not a fair fight," he muttered.

Then he noticed something growing beside the rock.

Metallic silver leaves.

Glowing faintly.

His eyes widened.

Silver-Heart Ginseng.

Right beside the monster.

Jonas sighed deeply.

"Of course it is."

After watching the serpent for several minutes and confirming it wasn't moving, Jonas slowly began descending the basin.

Each step felt like a terrible decision.

"System," he whispered, "probability of waking if I approach within five meters?"

Probability: 12%

Subject currently in a coma-like state.

Jonas approached carefully.

Up close, the serpent was even more intimidating.

Each scale looked like a shield forged from black steel.

Faint runes shimmered across the surface.

He carefully harvested two of the ginseng plants.

But when he looked back at the creature's wounds—

He hesitated.

The largest gash exposed raw muscle beneath shattered scales.

The purple corruption pulsed slowly.

Like a disease eating the creature alive.

Jonas exhaled.

"I'm going to regret this."

He crushed antiseptic Palebloom Moss into a paste.

[WARNING: HOST INTERFERING WITH CANONICAL DEATH EVENT]

"Shut up," Jonas muttered.

Then he stepped closer and applied the moss paste to the wound.

The serpent's tail twitched.

Jonas nearly had a heart attack.

But the creature did not wake.

Instead, it released a deep, rumbling sound.

The purple corruption dimmed slightly.

Encouraged, Jonas continued working.

For nearly an hour he cleaned wounds, applied herbs, and carefully removed infected tissue where possible.

Finally, he crushed a small piece of ginseng and placed the liquid at the corner of the serpent's mouth.

"There," he said tiredly.

"That's all I can do."

"If you eat me later, I'm going to be very offended."

Jonas climbed a nearby tree.

Then he ate the remaining Silver-Heart Ginseng.

Energy exploded through his body.

Pain.

Heat.

Power.

His bones creaked as density increased.

Muscles tightened.

Vision flashed white.

When the light faded—

The serpent was gone.

Instead, a man stood beside the rock.

Tall.

Broad-shouldered.

Long black hair cascading down his back.

Golden slit eyes glowing like molten suns.

He looked directly at Jonas.

"Little cat," the man rasped.

"Did you think I wouldn't smell you?"

Jonas nearly fell from the tree.

"I was helping!"

The man touched the moss bandage on his side.

Then he smirked.

"Helping a Cursed One?"

His golden eyes gleamed dangerously.

"You're either very brave…"

"…or very stupid."

New System Function Unlocked: MAP

Status Update: Encountered Male Lead

Jonas stared down at the man.

He didn't look like a monster.

He looked like someone who had been fighting the world alone.

"My name is Jonas," he called out.

"And you looked like you were dying."

"I don't like things dying unnecessarily."

Kaelith studied him for a long moment.

Then he smiled slowly.

"You've extended my life."

"That makes you responsible for it."

His golden eyes glinted.

"Don't run too far."

"I'll be watching."

Then—

He vanished into the mist.

Jonas sat in the tree for a long time.

Finally he sighed.

"Well, System…"

"I think the next seven days just got complicated."
