Chapter 4 - The Missing Figure

The lab was unnaturally quiet. Even the ticking of the clocks seemed muted, as if the building itself was holding its breath. Dr. Bright paced back and forth, worry etched across her face.

"Yo Abid, why so worried?" she asked.

Dr. Abid ran his hands through his hair, scanning the dim hallway. "I can't find Dr. Talloran… He's gone. Vanished without a trace."

A shadow moved in the corner—Dr. Clef stepped forward, frowning. "I noticed it too. The containment logs are empty. No alarms, no trace in any sector. SCP-3999 is involved."

Bright stopped pacing, eyes narrowing. "Then we don't have a choice. We need Murphy Lawden. He's our only chance to track him down."

Abid nodded, pulling out a small device. "He's not just a detective… his instincts, his ability to see patterns in chaos—they're unmatched. If anyone can find Talloran in SCP-3999's labyrinth, it's Murphy."

Clef's one red eye glimmered with concern. "But remember—SCP-3999 isn't just hiding him. It's testing us, manipulating reality, exploiting fear. Murphy will face more than just physical challenges."

Bright clenched her fists. "Then we prepare him. Every tool, every piece of information. We cannot fail—Talloran's life depends on it."

Shadows in the hallway seemed to shiver at their determination. Somewhere beyond reinforced walls and flickering lights, time itself twisted and bent. Tick… tick… tick…

Murphy Lawden entered the lab, coat over his shoulders, hat slightly tipped. His eyes scanned the tension, the fear, the stakes immediately.

"Looks like I missed something. Who's gone?" he asked.

"Talloran. He's missing. SCP-3999 is involved. We need you to track him—now," Bright said sharply.

Murphy's jaw tightened. "SCP-3999? That's not your usual suspect. Alright. Show me what we've got—logs, anomalies, clues. I'll find him."

Abid handed him the flickering device. "Be careful, Murphy. SCP-3999 can warp reality around you. It doesn't just hide people—it toys with perception, with fear. One wrong move, and…"

Murphy adjusted his hat, smirking slightly. "Then I better make every move count."

Bright, Abid, and Clef exchanged grim looks. The wall clocks ticked louder, echoing like a heartbeat. Time itself seemed to mock them.

"We'll support you remotely. Stabilizers, barriers, everything we can manage. But Murphy… you're the point. Talloran's life depends on it," Bright said.

Murphy nodded and stepped into the dark hallway. Shadows twisted, clocks cracked, and the walls whispered fears into his mind.

Somewhere, just beyond perception, Talloran's presence flickered, trapped in SCP-3999's endless game.

Tick… tick… tick…
