Chapter 1 - Chapter 1 – The Beginning: First Meeting at the Ferris Wheel (Part 1)

A waning moon hangs on a sparse parasol tree; the dripping of the water clock has ended, and people have just fallen silent.

Who sees the solitary man coming and going alone, drifting like the shadow of a lone wild goose?

As the newly appointed God of Death, Beifeng silently gazed at the unfamiliar world before him.

An indescribable silence.

Wait a second…

What the hell is with that man who comes with his own "God of Death aura"?!

Am I the God of Death, or is he the God of Death?!

(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

Of course, the taciturn Beifeng would never actually complain like that.

After all, he was a killer without emotions.

Not the kind of killer who played with knives or guns.

Beifeng was simply a…

A killer who used literature to confuse his targets.

Used mathematics to calculate parameters and margins of error.

Used English to blend in better when facing foreign targets.

Used politics to defend himself and avoid disasters.

Used history to study the methods of predecessors.

Used physical training to improve agility, strength, and defense.

A perfectly scientific and reasonable killer.

Or rather—

A God of Death.

My name is Morihara Beifeng, a God of Death living in this new world.

His appearance had not changed. His overwhelmingly handsome face remained as terrifying as ever, forcing him to seal half of it behind a mask.

As he walked down the street, men and women alike stared at him openly.

"Hiss! Why is that young man wrapped up so tightly? Could he be a wanted criminal? Tokyo hasn't been very peaceful lately," an auntie muttered while chewing spinach.

Beifeng's foot slipped slightly, but he continued walking forward.

The small notebook in his hand flashed.

A new name appeared inside.

This was the person he would soon deliver a boxed lunch to.

Today was Saturday.

Location: Tropical Land Amusement Park.

Inside the lively amusement park, Shinichi Kudo and Ran Mouri strolled along the street.

Visitors of all kinds passed by them.

Beautiful young girls. Handsome young men.

They stood out quite a bit.

Beifeng immediately noticed the horn-haired girl—and beside her…

A seemingly simple-minded young man.

He glanced once.

Then twice.

Then, I kept staring for quite a while.

Shinichi looked around at the scenery, trying to pick out a passerby so he could show off his observational skills to Ran.

He selected the girl who was about to commit murder.

Beifeng watched the famous detective grin foolishly while holding Ran's hand.

Ran let herself be pulled along by the tall boy as the two of them walked toward the roller coaster.

Beifeng followed closely behind.

Soon, he found the man he was supposed to serve a boxed lunch to.

Shinichi glanced back at the tall man wrapped up tightly.

He examined him up and down.

By a detective's instinct, he felt this person was very suspicious.

Beifeng glanced at him briefly and then looked away.

When Shinichi turned back, Beifeng immediately stared again—taking a deep breath while he was at it.

Perhaps he could tap into a bit of Death God power from him.

Nearby stood a blond man wearing a hat, looking extremely arrogant.

He cut into the line.

Out of goodwill toward foreign friends, Beifeng politely gave way.

The blond man glanced at him coldly—like a crime boss scanning his surroundings.

Beifeng lowered his head and did not stare back.

Behind the blond man, another large, dull-looking fellow hurried.

These two came from an organization supposedly trying to save the world—

The Crow Group.

No, wait.

Actually, it was a fake liquor factory.

A distillery.

Two grown men together naturally stood out.

Yet Beifeng seemed more interested in Shinichi.

He was worried that on his first day of work, someone might steal his title as God of Death.

Well…

Not really worried.

He simply thought the protagonist had—

A very ordinary face.

Completely ordinary from every angle.

Handsome, but ordinary.

Brilliant at deduction, but ordinary.

Great with girls…

Still ordinary.

Beifeng lined up behind Shinichi at the ticket gate.

Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed three kids sneaking through the entrance.

Their foolish behavior made his expression even more wooden.

Behind his sunglasses, Beifeng's deep eyes watched the three brats crawl into the tunnel.

They were about to experience a very educational moment in life.

At that moment, Beifeng had merely stepped forward when a weak, sickly voice shouted:

"Hey! Watch where you're going! You're blocking us!"

The man whose name was on Beifeng's list yelled angrily.

Beifeng finally raised his head.

His icy eyes flashed slightly.

He opened the Death God Notebook to confirm.

Ding.

"Assistant Grim Reaper position vacant. Death boxed meal is being manually delivered."

A completely ordinary boxed lunch suddenly appeared in his hands.

Beifeng calmly opened it, picked up a spoon, and said in a cool voice:

"Be good. Eat."

The man, sitting between two girls, had veins popping on his forehead.

"Are you insane?! Eat what?!"

He kicked Beifeng's seat irritably before moving past him and sitting behind him with the two girls.

One of the girls wore a headband, a short skirt, and had long hair down to her waist with a small shawl.

She gave Beifeng an apologetic smile.

Around her neck hung a pearl necklace, sparkling white in the sunlight.

Beifeng tapped the first name in the Death God Notebook.

He fell silent.

The cause of death written there was clear:

Crime of passion.

Throat severed by piano wire.

Below them, Shinichi and Ran had already taken their seats.

Their hands rested tightly together.

The safety bar slowly lowered.

The girl named Hitomi suddenly moved her hand behind her back and casually placed her bag behind her.

The roller coaster reached the highest point—

Then plunged downward.

The wind roared past everyone's ears as people screamed wildly.

Beifeng found the noise rather irritating.

The train suddenly rushed into a pitch-black tunnel.

Darkness always breeds fear.

People screamed even louder.

But Beifeng possessed night vision.

He clearly saw Hitomi's fingernails digging into the edge of the seat.

She leaned sideways toward the man beside her.

With her own hands—

She snapped the necklace.

Then, I hooked the other end onto the stone wall.

Beifeng:!

Panicking, he scooped a spoonful of rice and stretched his arm across the seat—

Stuffing the food directly into the man's mouth.

The rice melted instantly upon contact.

The man trembled violently.

Then his vision went black.

The girl's hand loosened.

The piano wire dropped along with something black.

Holding the lunchbox, Beifeng stared blankly.

A tiny wandering soul floated helplessly nearby.

He grabbed it casually.

Blood splattered across several passengers.

When the roller coaster emerged from the tunnel back into the light—

Screams erupted across the entire train.

The girl sitting next to Beifeng suddenly grabbed his right hand and rubbed it against her face.

Beifeng felt a bit of powder on his fingers.

A wheat-colored fingerprint appeared on her pale face.

Her cheap makeup had been smeared away by tears and Beifeng's fingers.

Beifeng disgustedly wiped the powder back onto her face.

Finally, the tormenting ride reached its end.

Everyone remained seated in silence.

Then they all simultaneously pulled out their phones—

The magical wands are capable of summoning the Japanese police.

"Help! Police! There's been a murder!"

However, Gin and Vodka were different.

They calmly stepped off from the last row of the roller coaster.

Without even glancing at the headless corpse—

They lowered their hats and tried to slip away.

At that moment—

Shinichi suddenly stood up and shouted:

"Wait! Everyone, don't leave! Listen to me!"

"This… is not an accident."

"It's a murder case!"

As soon as he finished speaking, a group of experienced police officers arrived right on cue.

Shinichi stood on the roller coaster seat, looking like a divine savior descending from heaven.

He wore a confident smile.

Then—

A staff member smacked his butt with a broom.

"Hey, kid! Do you want this seat scrapped?!"

"Stop stepping on it! Sit down!"

Shinichi obediently sat down.

Gin and Vodka froze awkwardly.

Leaving was impossible.

Staying was awkward.

Their terrifying aura completely disappeared.

Gin: "..."

I'm only doing this so the organization isn't exposed.

I'm only doing this so the transaction mission can continue.

Right.

I'm not scared.

Definitely not.

It's all for the organization.

The police began searching everyone's bags.

Eventually, they found a bloody kitchen knife wrapped in cloth inside the bag of the victim's girlfriend, Aiko.

The knife looked blunt—obviously incapable of beheading someone.

But the Japanese police, seemingly influenced by Shinichi's aura of stupidity, immediately dragged away the bewildered girl with glasses.

Seeing the "killer" caught—

Gin and Vodka's domineering presence returned.

They turned and prepared to leave.

Shinichi stretched out his hand dramatically.

"Wait!"

Ran tugged nervously at his sleeve.

But Shinichi's gaze remained fixed on Gin.

Everyone else became background decoration.

Gin stared at Shinichi with an extremely vicious gaze for ten full seconds.

Shinichi shivered slightly.

Yet he still declared:

"The killer is not her!"

Shinichi jumped down from the ride and examined the blood on the ground.

Then he looked at the blood on the knife.

He straightened his body—

Climbed onto the seat again—

Pointed dramatically at Hitomi.

"The killer… is you!"

Hitomi trembled.

"What nonsense are you talking about?!"

At that moment, police carried out a neatly severed head wrapped in white cloth.

Another officer carried a giant fat boy on a stretcher.

A child cried nearby:

"Waaah! Genta! Don't die!"

Because of the delay caused by Beifeng feeding the boxed meal—

The victim's head accidentally fell onto Genta's head.

Genta nearly died on the spot.

Ayumi burst into tears.

Mitsuhiko collapsed onto the ground in shock and even peed himself.

Ayumi cried even harder.

It smelled awful.

The police soon brought out a sealed bag containing several pearls.

Shinichi stared at Hitomi again.

"Where is your necklace?"

Hitomi hesitated.

"I… I lost it."

"Then why is the victim's blood on these pearls?"

"And why are you crying?"

"The murder weapon was piano wire, wasn't it?"

"Your fingerprints must still be on these items!"

Hitomi froze.

Then she shouted:

"It's not my fault!"

"It was him!"

"He abandoned me and fell in love with Aiko!"

"Men like him deserve to die!"

"So today—"

"I used the necklace he gave me to kill him!"

She collapsed to her knees, laughing wildly as tears slid down her face.

Silence filled the scene.

The woman was taken away by the police.

And Shinichi Kudo's glorious record gained another solved case.

Gin: Finally, we can leave.
