Chapter 20 - Chapter - 20 Team Selection for the Club Tournament

The match had ended.

But the excitement inside the stadium had not faded yet.

Students were still standing in groups, talking loudly about the thrilling chase they had just witnessed.

Team B had done the impossible.

They had chased down 143 runs in a dramatic final over.

The ground still echoed with the memory of that moment when Ravi struck the winning boundary.

Players from both teams slowly walked off the field.

Some looked exhausted.

Some looked disappointed.

But many of them knew they had just been part of a match that people would remember for a long time.

Arjun sat near the boundary rope for a moment.

His chest still rose and fell heavily from the intensity of the game.

Thirty runs in just twelve balls.

And three crucial overs with the ball earlier.

It had been one of the most explosive performances he had ever delivered.

Yet he couldn't stop thinking about the moment he got out.

The pull shot.

The top edge.

The catch.

For a moment he closed his eyes.

A small smile appeared on his face.

Cricket… always unpredictable.

Ravi walked toward him and gently tapped his shoulder.

"Still thinking about that shot?" Ravi asked.

Arjun chuckled.

"Maybe."

Ravi sat beside him.

"But you changed the game," Ravi said calmly.

"If you hadn't attacked like that, the pressure would have destroyed us."

Arjun looked toward the pitch.

The players were shaking hands now.

"Still," he said quietly, "I wanted to stay till the end."

Ravi laughed softly.

"That's what every batsman says."

The two of them stood up and began walking toward their teammates.

But something unusual was happening near the center of the ground.

A group of players had started gathering.

The murmurs of the crowd slowly changed.

People were whispering.

"Is it happening now?"

"Are they announcing the team?"

Arjun noticed it too.

He looked toward Ravi.

"What's going on?"

Ravi shrugged.

"I think… the club tournament team is going to be announced."

Arjun's heart skipped a beat.

The club tournament.

It was one of the biggest opportunities for young players in the region.

Every year, only a few were selected to represent the club team.

Those who performed well there could attract the attention of bigger academies and district teams.

For many young cricketers, it was the first real step toward a serious career.

And now the announcement was about to happen.

Karn Steps Forward

Near the center of the ground, a tall figure walked forward.

His presence alone brought silence.

It was Karn.

He was well known in the local cricket circles.

A powerful all-rounder in his younger days.

Now he was responsible for selecting and guiding players for the club tournaments.

Many young players admired him.

Many feared him.

Because Karn was not someone who made decisions lightly.

He believed in discipline.

He believed in courage.

And above all, he believed in performance under pressure.

Karn stood in front of the gathered players.

He looked around slowly.

His sharp eyes scanned the crowd.

Every player immediately straightened their posture.

The murmurs stopped.

Even the wind seemed quiet.

Karn finally spoke.

"Today's match was excellent."

His voice was calm but powerful.

"Both teams played with spirit."

He paused for a moment.

"I saw aggression… patience… mistakes… and bravery."

Players exchanged nervous glances.

Everyone knew why he was really here.

Karn continued.

"The club tournament begins soon."

The words instantly increased the tension.

"And today… I will announce the squad."

A wave of whispers passed through the players.

Some looked excited.

Some looked terrified.

Arjun felt his palms becoming sweaty.

He hadn't even imagined that he might be selected.

After all… it had only been one match.

The Captain

Karn folded his arms behind his back.

"First," he said, "I will announce the leadership."

Every player leaned forward slightly.

Karn looked directly at them.

"For this tournament… I will lead the team myself."

A few players nodded.

This decision was not surprising.

Karn was experienced and respected.

If the team was going into an important tournament, having him as captain would bring confidence.

But then Karn raised his hand again.

"And the vice-captain…"

He paused deliberately.

The silence became heavier.

"Rohit."

Many heads turned immediately.

Rohit had been the captain of Team B in the match that just ended.

He was a smart leader.

Calm under pressure.

And he understood the game well.

Rohit looked slightly surprised but quickly stepped forward.

Karn nodded at him.

"You showed good leadership today."

Rohit bowed his head respectfully.

"I will do my best."

The Names Begin

Now came the moment everyone had been waiting for.

Karn pulled out a small sheet of paper.

"These are the players selected for the club tournament squad."

Every heartbeat in the group seemed to grow louder.

One by one, Karn began reading the names.

Each name caused a reaction.

Some players smiled widely and stepped forward.

Some sighed in disappointment when they didn't hear their name.

The list slowly continued.

More names.

More reactions.

Arjun stood quietly in the middle of the group.

At first, he listened calmly.

Then slowly… a strange thought entered his mind.

Maybe… just maybe…

But he quickly shook his head.

No.

There were many talented players here.

More experienced ones.

More consistent ones.

Why would anyone select him based on a single explosive innings?

Karn continued announcing the squad.

The list was almost finished.

Only one name remained.

Karn looked up from the paper.

His eyes scanned the players again.

Then he spoke.

"Finally…"

He paused.

"…Arjun."

For a moment, nobody reacted.

The name hung in the air like an echo.

Then suddenly—

"What?"

"Arjun?"

"Seriously?"

The players around him turned in shock.

Some stared at him with disbelief.

Some whispered among themselves.

Even Ravi looked stunned.

Arjun himself felt frozen.

Did he hear that correctly?

Karn spoke again.

"Arjun."

This time there was no doubt.

That was his name.

Ravi pushed him slightly.

"Go," he whispered.

Arjun slowly stepped forward.

His legs felt strangely heavy.

When he reached the front, Karn looked directly into his eyes.

There was no smile.

No expression.

Only calm observation.

"You played one match today," Karn said.

Arjun nodded nervously.

"But in that one match… you showed courage."

Arjun remained silent.

Karn continued.

"You attacked without fear."

He paused.

"And you bowled with intensity."

The players behind them were still whispering.

Some were surprised.

Some were clearly unhappy.

Selecting a player based on one match was unusual.

But Karn seemed completely unconcerned about their opinions.

He simply folded the paper.

"The main playing eleven will be announced later."

That sentence immediately changed the atmosphere again.

Being selected in the squad did not guarantee a place in the final eleven.

Players would still have to prove themselves.

Karn turned away.

"That is all."

With those words, the announcement ended.

Shock and Excitement

The players slowly began dispersing.

Some congratulated each other.

Some walked away quietly.

Ravi ran toward Arjun immediately.

"You idiot!" Ravi laughed.

"You got selected!"

Arjun still looked stunned.

"I… I don't understand."

Ravi slapped his back.

"Thirty runs in twelve balls."

"And those overs you bowled."

"Of course he noticed you."

But Arjun still couldn't fully believe it.

His mind kept replaying Karn's words.

You showed courage.

The excitement slowly began spreading through his chest.

A strange warmth filled his heart.

For the first time, the possibility of something bigger began forming in his mind.

The Walk Home

As the sun slowly started lowering in the sky, Arjun walked back home.

The streets were peaceful.

Children were playing cricket in small lanes.

The sound of a tennis ball hitting a plastic bat echoed in the air.

Arjun watched them for a moment.

He smiled.

Just a few years ago… he had been exactly like them.

Now he had been selected for a club tournament squad.

His steps became faster.

He couldn't wait to tell his parents.

When he finally reached home, he pushed the door open excitedly.

His mother looked up from the kitchen.

"You're back early today."

Arjun tried to control his excitement.

"Amma… something happened."

She immediately sensed his energy.

"What is it?"

Arjun took a deep breath.

"I got selected."

"For the club tournament team."

His mother's eyes widened with happiness.

"Really?"

She immediately hugged him.

"That's wonderful!"

At that moment his father walked into the room.

"What's going on?"

Arjun turned toward him.

"I got selected for the club tournament squad."

For a brief second, his father's expression changed.

There was pride.

There was happiness.

But he quickly hid it behind a calm face.

"Hmm," he said simply.

"Good."

That was all.

No big reaction.

No celebration.

Just one word.

But Arjun understood.

His father walked closer and placed a hand on his shoulder.

"Don't get carried away," he said quietly.

"This is only the beginning."

Arjun nodded seriously.

"Yes."

But as he went to his room later that night, a smile slowly appeared on his face.

The journey had taken its first real step.

And somewhere in the distance…

Karn was already planning the future of the team.
