Chapter 17 - Chapter 17

The city never really slowed down.

Even in the late afternoon, when the filming day had wrapped earlier than usual, the world outside the studio walls was already alive with updates, clips, and fan theories spreading across social media. Phones buzzed in pockets, hashtags climbed trending lists, and somewhere out there people were already analyzing every moment William and Est had shared on camera that week.

Inside the studio, though, things were unusually quiet.

The large soundstage that had been bustling with crew members just an hour earlier now echoed with emptiness. Light stands stood half-folded near the edges of the set. A few cables were still coiled along the floor where technicians had been working earlier.

Sunlight streamed through the tall warehouse windows, filling the space with warm golden light. Dust particles floated lazily in the air, drifting through the beams like tiny sparks.

Est stood near the center of the stage, stretching his arms above his head with a tired groan.

His hair was slightly messy from hours of filming, and he rolled his shoulders as if trying to shake the exhaustion out of them.

William leaned casually against the far wall, watching him with quiet amusement.

"You look tired," William said softly.

Est lowered his arms and glanced over.

"Observation skills: impressive," he replied with a faint smile.

William pushed off the wall and walked toward him slowly. "It's been a long week," he added.

Est nodded, running a hand through his hair.

"Early call times. Night shoots. And that livestream yesterday."

He exhaled, but there was a warm light in his eyes.

"But honestly… it's been worth it."

William tilted his head slightly. "Because the show is doing well?"

Est shook his head. "Partly."

Then he smiled more genuinely. "But mostly because of us."

William stopped walking for a moment, the words settling between them. "Us," he repeated quietly.

The way he said it made the word feel heavier—more real.

His grin softened into something warmer.

"Yeah," he said. "I like that word."

Est laughed under his breath, slightly embarrassed by the sincerity. "Don't make it sound so dramatic."

William shrugged playfully. "You know I'm dramatic."

"And you're proud of it."

"Absolutely."

The empty studio echoed faintly with their quiet laughter.

A few minutes later they stepped out the back entrance of the studio building.

The late afternoon air was cooler outside, carrying the faint smell of street food and car exhaust from nearby blocks. The sky was beginning to soften into sunset colors—pale gold fading into warm pinks across the horizon.

This side of the studio district was quieter than the front entrance.

Most fans waited near the main gate.

Here, the streets were calmer.

William shoved his hands casually into his jacket pockets as they started walking down the sidewalk.

For a few moments they didn't speak.

They just enjoyed the quiet.

Est kicked lightly at a small pebble on the pavement as they walked.

Then William's hand brushed against his.

A small accidental touch.

Est didn't pull away.

Instead, after a second, he let his fingers slide between William's.

Their hands intertwined naturally.

Neither of them commented on it.

But the simple gesture felt more intimate than anything they'd done in front of cameras.

"You know what's funny?" Est said after a while.

William glanced over. "What?"

"The more everyone speculates about us…"

Est looked down at their hands briefly before finishing his sentence.

"…the more I just want to disappear somewhere with you."

William squeezed his hand gently. "I get that."

They turned a corner where the buildings opened up slightly, revealing the sunset reflecting off glass windows down the street.

"But hiding isn't really an option anymore," William added quietly.

Est nodded. "I know."

He leaned slightly closer as they walked. "So we just steal the moments we can."

William smiled. "I'm very good at stealing moments."

Est laughed.

"That sounds like something a villain would say."

"Or a romantic lead."

"Same thing," Est teased.

They slowed their pace as they reached a quieter block where the city traffic noise faded into the background.

William suddenly stopped walking.

Est took another step before realizing, then turned back toward him. "What?"

William looked at him for a moment.

The fading sunlight cast soft orange light across Est's face.

William reached up and gently tucked a loose strand of hair behind Est's ear.

His fingers lingered briefly.

"You know something?" William said quietly.

"What?"

"I've imagined this moment."

Est blinked. "This… right now?"

William nodded. "Not acting. Not pretending. Just walking together."

Est felt his chest tighten slightly.

"For months," William added.

Est looked down briefly, then back up. "I thought I was the only one."

William smiled softly. "You?"

Est laughed nervously. "Yeah."

He rubbed the back of his neck slightly. "I kept thinking… what if I'm reading everything wrong?"

William stepped closer. "You weren't."

Est looked relieved. "Good."

"Why?"

"Because I've been imagining this too," Est admitted.

William chuckled. "Well that worked out nicely."

Est rolled his eyes but smiled. "You're impossible."

"And you like it."

Est didn't deny it.

As they continued walking, the quiet atmosphere shifted slightly.

Up ahead, a small group of people stood outside a café.

Some of them looked up.

Recognition sparked instantly.

Phones appeared.

"Wait—"

"Is that William?"

"And Est!"

William noticed immediately.

His posture changed subtly.

"Stay close," he murmured.

Before Est could respond, William's arm wrapped naturally around his waist.

The gesture looked casual.

But it was protective.

Est glanced up at him with a small smile.

"Protective, are we?"

"Always."

Fans began waving excitedly.

But William kept walking calmly, guiding Est gently along the sidewalk.

They didn't stop.

They didn't rush either.

Just steady, controlled movement through the moment.

Once they turned the next corner and the crowd noise faded, William relaxed slightly.

"That was fast," Est said.

"Fans move quickly," William replied.

Est leaned his head briefly against William's shoulder as they walked. "You know you don't have to protect me all the time."

William looked down at him. "I know."

"Then why do you?"

William thought for a second. "Because I want to."

Est smiled softly. "I like that answer."

By the time they reached the riverfront walkway, the sun had fully set.

Street lamps cast warm circles of light along the path.

Across the water, the city skyline glittered with thousands of glowing windows.

The river reflected the lights like a field of moving stars.

They stopped on a small pedestrian bridge overlooking the water.

A gentle breeze moved across the surface of the river.

Est leaned against the railing. "This place is nice."

William stood beside him. "I come here sometimes after late shoots."

"Why?"

"It's quiet."

Est nodded.

They stood there in comfortable silence for a while.

Eventually William turned toward him. "I wish moments like this lasted longer," he said softly.

Est looked at him. "Me too."

William took both of Est's hands in his.

The contact felt warm against the cool night air.

William leaned forward slowly.

Their kiss was gentle and unhurried.

Not dramatic.

Not desperate.

Just soft and steady.

When they separated, Est wrapped his arms loosely around William's neck.

"The world doesn't need to know everything," Est whispered.

William rested his forehead against his.

"No," he agreed.

"We decide what's ours."

Est smiled. "And this moment?"

William squeezed his hands gently. "This moment is ours."

They stayed on the bridge for a long time.

Talking quietly.

Laughing softly.

Watching the city lights ripple across the water.

...

The riverfront was quiet by the time William and Est finally left the bridge.

The night air had grown cooler, and the city had shifted into its late-evening rhythm—restaurants glowing warmly behind glass windows, taxis gliding past in yellow streaks, distant laughter drifting from open patios.

William and Est walked slowly along the riverside path, neither of them in any hurry to return to the world waiting for them.

Est still had his hands tucked inside William's jacket pockets, standing close enough that their shoulders brushed with every step.

"You know," Est said softly, glancing up at the skyline, "we've been here for hours."

William checked his phone briefly.

"…Three and a half."

Est laughed. "And no one bothered us."

William slipped an arm around Est's shoulders as they walked. "Don't jinx it."

Est nudged him playfully. "You're the one who said we should come here."

"And I was right."

"You were."

The quiet stretched comfortably between them. Just the steady hum of the city and the sound of the river flowing beneath the bridge behind them.

Eventually they reached the parking area where William had left his car earlier that evening.

Est leaned against the passenger door while William unlocked it.

"I don't want tonight to end," Est admitted.

William looked at him for a moment. "It doesn't have to."

Est raised an eyebrow.

"Oh?"

"You could stay over," William said casually.

Est crossed his arms, pretending to consider. "Hm. Tempting offer."

William opened the car door dramatically. "I promise good coffee in the morning."

"That's a strong argument."

"And breakfast."

Est slid into the passenger seat.

"Okay, now I'm convinced."

The drive through the city felt calmer than usual.

Traffic had thinned, leaving long quiet streets lit by rows of street lamps.

Soft music played through the car speakers.

Est leaned back in his seat, watching lights pass by outside the window.

After a few minutes he spoke quietly.

"Do you ever think about how strange all this is?"

William glanced over. "What part?"

"The fact that thousands of people analyze our lives like it's a TV show."

William chuckled softly. "Well… technically our lives are part of a TV show right now."

Est laughed. "True."

He turned slightly toward William.

"But this part—"

He gestured between them.

"This part isn't scripted."

William reached over and briefly squeezed Est's knee. "No."

"It's better than anything they could write."

Est smiled at the windshield, feeling warmth spread through his chest.

William's apartment building stood tall above a quieter residential block of the city.

The lobby lights were dim when they walked inside.

The security guard at the desk nodded politely but didn't say anything.

They took the elevator up together.

Inside the elevator, the silence felt different—smaller, more intimate.

Est leaned against the mirrored wall. "You know fans are probably still posting about us being at the river."

William smirked. "How would they know?"

Est pointed to his own phone.

"Because I posted a picture of the skyline."

William blinked. "You what?"

Est grinned mischievously. "I didn't tag the location."

William shook his head.

"Relax. It's just the skyline."

The elevator doors opened onto William's floor.

William's apartment was warm and softly lit.

Large windows overlooked the glowing city below.

Est immediately wandered toward the balcony doors. "You really do have the best view in the city," he said.

William dropped his jacket on the couch. "I know."

Est stepped out onto the balcony.

The cool night air brushed against his face.

Below them the city stretched endlessly, lights twinkling like stars scattered across the streets.

William joined him a moment later, leaning against the railing beside him.

Est looked over. "It feels… normal."

William smiled faintly. "Normal is underrated."

Est nodded. "Very."

For a while they simply stood together, enjoying the quiet.

Eventually Est turned toward him. "You meant what you said earlier, right?"

"About?" William looked confused.

"Stealing moments."

William laughed softly. "Of course."

He stepped closer.

His hand rested gently on Est's waist. "We'll keep finding them."

Est wrapped his arms around William's neck.

Their faces were only inches apart now.

"You're very determined," Est murmured.

"I am."

William kissed him slowly.

The city lights glowed behind them while the world outside continued buzzing with speculation and rumors.

Their kiss deepened slightly, warm and unhurried.

When they finally pulled apart, Est rested his forehead against William's.

"So," Est whispered. "What now?"

William smiled.

"Now?"

He brushed his thumb gently along Est's cheek. "Now we sleep."

Est laughed softly. "Romantic."

William shrugged. "We've got filming tomorrow."

Est groaned dramatically. "Reality again."

William pulled him into a hug.

"For now."
