Chapter 6 — The birth of anomaly

The laboratory was silent except for the faint hum of energy conduits and the occasional beep of monitoring equipment. Zor-El stood before the containment pod, his hands steady as he adjusted the final calibrations. Inside the pod, the embryo that would become Von-Ra El floated, bathed in the soft glow of life-sustaining fields.

Alura In-Ze leaned against the wall, her hands trembling slightly as she observed the delicate containment. "Zor… it's… it's too much," she whispered. "You're tampering with forces no one has touched before. This… child…" Her voice cracked, trailing off.

Zor-El's golden eyes met hers, firm yet tinged with exhaustion. "Alura, we have no other choice. Krypton will not last. If we fail… all of this—everything—will be lost."

Alura's lips quivered. "And if we succeed?"

He let out a short, bitter laugh. "Then he will carry within him the legacy of every house, the gene of Ra, and the essence of a Viltrumite. And if the genes fight… he may not survive anyway."

In the corner, Jor-El quietly monitored the holographic interface of the genetic arrays. "The Viltrumite gene is highly invasive," he said, his voice calm but precise. "Even in small doses, it will try to dominate the Kryptonian sequences. The Ra gene is resilient, but it resists subjugation. Integrating them is an extraordinary gamble."

Zor-El rubbed his temples. "Every sequence we've tried before failed. Either the Ra gene rejected the foreign DNA completely, or the Viltrumite gene corrupted the embryo, creating mutations too unstable to survive. This… this is the first sequence that shows any semblance of equilibrium."

One of the senior scientists, a meticulous woman named Thera, stepped forward. "The probability of failure is still high. Even with perfect alignment, conflicting genetic imperatives can create a cellular collapse. It could… kill him in utero."

Alura pressed a hand over her chest, fighting back tears. "And yet… you insist?"

Zor-El nodded. "If we do not try, Krypton dies. If we fail… he dies. There is no middle path. But if we succeed…" His gaze softened for a fraction of a second. "…he may become what no other Kryptonian can ever be."

Hours passed. The team monitored every heartbeat, every fluctuation in the embryo's tiny body. Tiny bursts of energy pulsed through the containment fields, a faint echo of the conflicting genes struggling to dominate.

Jor-El observed closely. "Look. The Viltrumite gene is attempting to rewrite the Ra sequence. The Ra gene is resisting. It's a stalemate, delicate but… alive."

Zor-El's brow furrowed. "Yes… the genes are negotiating, if such a thing is possible. Each one knows its own supremacy, yet they… compromise. The Viltrumite cannot fully dominate, the Ra cannot fully assert itself. And the Kryptonian sequences stabilize the structure just enough to survive."

Alura's eyes filled with tears. "It's… so fragile."

Thera whispered, almost to herself, "It's a miracle, but a very dangerous one. One misalignment, one lapse… and it could all collapse."

The room went silent, the hum of machinery filling the void. Von-Ra shifted slightly in the pod, tiny fists curling instinctively. Zor-El and Jor-El exchanged glances.

"He's responding," Zor-El said. "Even in his earliest state, there's… awareness. It's faint, but there."

Alura stepped closer, resting her hands gently on the containment glass. "My son…" she whispered. "Please survive. Please…" Her voice broke as she pressed her forehead to the cold surface. For the first time, she allowed herself to fear the worst: losing the child she carried within the hope of a dying planet.

Zor-El placed a steadying hand on her shoulder. "Alura… he is stronger than you realize. The genes are alive, yes, but they are bound together. For now, he survives because he must. That is the first victory."

Minutes turned into hours. Slowly, the tumultuous struggle between genes began to stabilize. The Viltrumite sequences, aggressive and invasive, bent slightly, restrained by the subtle divinity stored in the Ra gene. The Ra gene, in turn, allowed limited dominance to the Viltrumite strain, a compromise. Kryptonian sequences held the foundation steady.

Thera's voice, quiet but filled with awe, broke the silence. "It's working… the sequences have reached… equilibrium. Probability of survival… increasing significantly."

Zor-El exhaled slowly. "We are not out of danger yet, but… it may live."

Alura sank into a chair, exhausted and shaking. "I thought… I thought we would lose him. I cannot bear it. He is all we have left."

Jor-El moved beside her. "He will be fine… for now. But remember, this is only the beginning. The child will grow in secret, and the genes will continue to contend within him. We must guide him carefully."

Days later, the experiment concluded. Von-Ra was born healthy, a child with black hair and golden eyes, a subtle sign of the Ra gene's divinity within his blood. The Viltrumite gene remained dormant but present, a silent force, waiting for the right moment to awaken.

Zor-El watched the newborn, a mixture of relief and apprehension in his eyes. "He survived… against all odds. But he will not have powers yet. Nothing more than this anomaly: the golden eyes. That is enough for now."

Alura held her child, finally letting her tears fall freely. "My son… you are alive. And we will keep you safe… no matter what it takes."

Jor-El placed a hand on Zor-El's shoulder. "The council must never know. Not yet. This is our secret… and the foundation of Krypton's last hope."

Deep within the child's tiny body, the three genetic forces—the Ra divinity, the Viltrumite legacy, and the Kryptonian foundation—whispered against each other. The battle was not over. Every heartbeat was a negotiation, every cell a compromise.

The future of Krypton, the fate of Von-Ra, and the survival of a dying planet rested on this fragile equilibrium… a secret only a few dared to witness.
