Zara's boots sank into the damp earth, each step heavy with exhaustion. The forest behind her seemed endless, but she had no choice — every second she lingered was a second closer to capture.
The stranger who had guided her this far was silent now, moving like a shadow at her side. Zara's mind raced, her heart pounding with questions she didn't dare ask aloud. Who can I trust? And what exactly are the Ashes?
A sudden rustle in the underbrush made her freeze. She pressed herself against a tree, dagger at the ready. Two figures emerged, moving cautiously but with deadly intent. Her pulse spiked. They're faster than I thought.
With a swift glance at the stranger, she nodded. He didn't hesitate. Together, they darted through a narrow gap between trees, branches slashing at their faces. The pursuers cursed behind them, but Zara didn't look back.
Hours later, they reached the edge of a cliff overlooking the valley below. The sun was sinking, painting the world in blood-red hues. A lone vehicle waited — a battered SUV that promised escape, though it smelled of oil and rust.
"Get in," the stranger said, holding the door. "This is the only way out. Once we're on the road, there's no turning back."
Zara hesitated, eyes scanning the horizon. The wind carried the distant roar of engines — more of them. Every instinct screamed danger.
She climbed in. As the SUV lurched forward down the winding path, she couldn't shake the thought that someone — or something — was always one step ahead.
Hours later, in the dim glow of the dashboard, Zara unfolded the letter again. The words burned into her mind: "…trust no one… they are closer than you think… the Ashes will rise…"
Her eyes widened. If the Ashes were rising, then the danger wasn't just chasing her. It was already here.
A sudden horn blared. From the rearview mirror, Zara saw headlights cutting through the darkness.
"They found us…" she whispered.
The SUV swerved violently, tires screaming against the dirt road. Ahead, the path split — one way into the valley, the other plunging toward a cliffside ravine.
Zara gripped the edge of her seat. The stranger glanced at her, eyes dark and unreadable.
"Your choice," he said calmly.
And with that, the SUV barreled forward — straight toward the unknown.
