Chapter 5 - Shadow Fang

The village of Elderglen was burning.

Smoke drifted above the rooftops as lanterns fell and wooden fences splintered under the claws of monsters. Screams echoed through the night while villagers fled toward the central square.

Renor Kael stood at the edge of the wheat fields, breathing hard.

His heart still pounded from the moment he had killed the last monster.

The strange system messages still lingered faintly in his mind.

Skill Activated: Shadow Strike Level 1

Renor stared at his hands.

Moments ago he had been nothing more than a farmer.

Now… something had changed.

Something inside him had awakened.

Another scream snapped him back to reality.

Renor turned.

A group of villagers ran past him, carrying an injured hunter.

"More monsters near the barns!"

"We can't hold them!"

Renor clenched his fists.

If they keep coming out of that Rift…

The thought didn't finish.

Because something moved in the darkness.

Not the clumsy scuttling of the insect monsters.

Something quieter.

Faster.

Renor slowly turned toward the wheat fields again.

The tall golden stalks swayed gently in the night wind.

Then the shadows moved.

A shape slipped between the crops with unnatural grace.

Silent.

Predatory.

Renor's instincts screamed danger.

The creature stepped out of the wheat.

It was smaller than the other monsters.

Lean.

Black fur covered its body like living darkness. Long claws curved from its forelimbs, and its glowing eyes burned like two crimson embers.

The creature's mouth opened slightly, revealing rows of needle-like teeth.

Renor swallowed.

"…Another wolf?"

But this one felt different.

Faster.

Deadlier.

A whisper echoed inside Renor's mind.

Monster Identified

Type: Shadow Fang

Threat Level: High

Renor's grip tightened around his shovel.

"Of course it's high."

The Shadow Fang crouched low.

Unlike the other monsters, it didn't charge immediately.

It watched him.

Studying him.

The creature's shadow stretched unnaturally across the ground.

Then it moved.

In an instant, the monster vanished into darkness.

Renor's eyes widened.

"Where"

A sharp pain exploded across his shoulder.

The Shadow Fang had appeared behind him.

Its claws sliced through his jacket.

Renor stumbled forward.

The creature landed silently behind him again.

It was fast.

Much faster than the monsters he had fought earlier.

Renor forced himself to stay calm.

Think.

The system voice echoed faintly in his memory.

Essence contains fragments of monster instincts.

That meant something important.

The Shadow Fang lunged again.

Renor waited.

At the last second, he stepped sideways.

The monster's claws missed his throat by inches.

Renor swung the shovel.

CLANG.

The blade struck the creature's ribs.

The Shadow Fang hissed and jumped back.

It circled him slowly now.

Testing.

Learning.

Renor's heartbeat slowed.

Something strange was happening inside his mind.

The fear was fading.

Instead, a cold clarity filled his thoughts.

He could read the monster's movements.

Predict its attack patterns.

Almost like instinct.

Is this… the essence?

The creature lunged again.

Renor moved first.

Shadows gathered around his arm.

The system responded instantly.

Skill Ready

Shadow Strike

Renor stepped forward.

Instead of retreating, he attacked.

"Shadow Strike."

The words left his mouth like a command.

Dark energy surged through his muscles.

His body moved faster than he thought possible.

The shovel cut through the air like a blade of shadow.

The strike landed directly on the monster's skull.

CRACK.

The Shadow Fang flew backward and crashed into the wheat.

It struggled to stand.

But Renor didn't give it time.

He rushed forward and struck again.

This time the shovel pierced its neck.

The monster's body twitched once.

Then it went still.

Silence returned to the field.

Renor stood there, breathing heavily.

"I… did it."

A moment later, the corpse began to glow.

Dark mist rose from the Shadow Fang's body.

Renor recognized it immediately.

"Essence…"

The mist drifted toward him.

Before he could react, it entered his chest.

A powerful surge rushed through his body.

Renor staggered.

Visions exploded across his mind.

Running through forests at night.

Hunting prey in total darkness.

Striking silently from shadows.

The instincts of the Shadow Fang flowed into him.

His senses sharpened.

He could hear distant footsteps in the village.

Smell smoke in the air.

Feel the movement of wind across the fields.

The system appeared again.

Renor exhaled slowly.

"So that's how it works…"

Every monster carried essence.

That essence contained fragments of their abilities.

And the system allowed him to absorb them.

To grow stronger.

To evolve.

Renor looked down at the fallen Shadow Fang.

"If I defeat monsters… I gain their power."

The realization sent a strange thrill through him.

But it also frightened him.

Because the voice had warned him earlier.

Essence overload may cause mutation or death.

Renor looked toward the distant Rift.

More monsters were still pouring out.

The village was still in danger.

But now…

Renor had something the other villagers didn't.

A way to fight back.

A way to grow stronger.

The Hybrid System stirred quietly in his mind.

Waiting for the next monster.
