Lanterns swayed gently in the evening breeze, casting flickering colors across the Hollow High Academy courtyard. Students hurried around, decorating booths and preparing for the Devil's Moon Festival — an annual celebration meant to "honor" the boundary between demons and humans.
Pixie twirled in a cloak of fake bat wings, her excitement infectious.
"This is the only time of year they let us legally mix potion booths with kissing booths," she declared, spinning once more. "I live for this."
Jinx, tying her long black hair into a tight ponytail, glanced around distractedly.
"I just hope this year doesn't end in literal bloodshed," she muttered.
From the edge of the courtyard, Rika Akane watched with a frozen smile, icy blue eyes glinting in the lantern light.
"Or maybe it will," she said softly, just for herself.
By mid-afternoon, the festival had reached full swing. Dante stood at the Demon Arena booth, judging the strength of a group of demon competitors. His expression was stern as always, but when his eyes met Jinx's, there was a faint softening — just enough to notice.
"You're late," he said in his usual clipped tone.
Jinx smirked, leaning casually against the edge of the booth.
"And you're smiling," she teased.
"Tch," he muttered, looking away. "Must be a side effect of standing in the moonlight too long."
Their brief exchange was interrupted by a scream that cut through the festival music and laughter. Smoke curled from the far side of the grounds.
Kazuki came running, eyes wide.
"There's a rupture in the demon seal! Something broke through!"
Panic spread instantly. A lesser demon charged into the crowd, forcing students to scatter. Dante immediately stepped in front of Jinx, his arms glowing with demonic sigils as he snarled at the intruder.
"No one touches her," he growled.
Jinx, retrieving a charm from her pocket, grinned.
"Let's put that 'protective' talk to work," she said.
Side by side, they fought. Their movements were swift and precise, an almost beautiful dance amid the chaos. Fire, light, and demonic energy clashed as they cleared a path through the frightened students.
As the dust settled, a strange cry echoed from the dark forest beyond the academy. The festivities continued obliviously behind them, but Jinx and Dante froze, both hearing it clearly.
"Did you hear that?" Jinx asked, tense.
Dante's eyes narrowed.
"Yeah… something ancient."
They moved toward the forest, lantern light fading behind them. The woods were silent except for their footsteps — until they stumbled upon it: blood staining the underbrush, torn fabric caught in branches, deep claw marks gouged into the earth.
Jinx whispered, horrified.
"But no bodies…"
Dante growled softly, sensing the danger.
"This isn't from a lesser demon."
Unseen in the shadows, Rika watched, her red eyes flickering toward something darker lurking behind her. Her lips curled.
"Keep following the breadcrumbs, sweet Jinx," she murmured, almost fondly. "You'll find me soon enough. But you won't like what I am."
No one knew the truth of Rika Akane. She was not a vampire. Not even a typical demon. She was something older… something forbidden.
Backstage, the festival's chaos now reduced to distant laughter, Jinx leaned against a table, bruised but laughing. Dante, beside her, had a torn shirt and a trickle of blood down his arm.
"You really went full demon out there," she teased, brushing a strand of hair from her face.
He grunted, eyes still scanning for threats.
"You almost died. Again," he said.
Jinx shrugged, smirking.
"And yet… I'm still breathing. Thanks to you."
Dante stared at her for a long moment, eyes glowing faintly in the lantern light.
"Stop making me feel like this," he said quietly.
"Like what?" Jinx asked, her tone teasing yet vulnerable.
His gaze softened for a heartbeat.
"Like I'd burn down my own world just to keep yours safe."
He pulled away, suddenly cold.
"Go back to your friends. Before I forget I'm pretending I don't love you."
Jinx watched him go, her heart both aching and racing. The moon bathed the festival in red light, and the wind whispered around her cloak like a secret.
