Their eyes met across the distance, a collision of wills that sent a shiver down her spine.
He stood at the doorway of the foyer, still wearing the clothes he had been wearing the previous night, although his coat and cravat were gone, and his hair was nowhere as neat as it had been the previous night.
Agnes opened the door wider for her to enter.
"Where have you been, my lady? You had everyone worried sick."
Her gaze remained fixed on Theodore.
"Nowhere of importance," she muttered.
"Leave us," she heard Theodore say.
"Agnes, stay," she said to Agnes, holding her arm.
"Agnes, leave us." His voice was more insistent than before.
Agnes skirted a curtsy and peeled the hand off her arm, hurrying off the moment she was free.
The moment Agnes was gone, he stepped forward.
"Where were you?" she gulped.
"Where I was is none of your business."
She was suddenly aware of how much her dress dripped onto the polished marble floor.
